Book Search for the Rare Decay Neutral Kaon long Going to Neutral Pion neutrino antineutrino

Download or read book Search for the Rare Decay Neutral Kaon long Going to Neutral Pion neutrino antineutrino written by Jiasen Ma and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for K0L & rarr; pi0nunu was performed on data taken during the last Run of the E391a experiment at KEK. Blind analysis approach was adopted. The acceptance for the signal was improved from previous analysis by about 40% because of a better understanding of the background. With (3.48 +/- 0.25) * 109 K0L decays, we found no candidate events. An upper limit of 6.96 x 10-8 on the K0L & rarr; pi0nunu branching ratio was set at the 90% confidence level.

Book Search for the Rare Decay of Long lived Kaon to Pions Neutrino Antineutrino

Download or read book Search for the Rare Decay of Long lived Kaon to Pions Neutrino Antineutrino written by Yi Zheng and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The E391a collaboration searched for rare kaon decays at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron in Tsukuba, Japan. This thesis focuses on using a blind analysis to search for the rare decay K0L→p0p 0nn.&d1; In a blind analysis, the signal region is kept hidden while choosing event selection criteria. The background was estimated through the bifurcation method to be 0.26 +/- 0.18stat +/- 0.01 syst. The kaon flux is estimated to be (5.61 +/- 0.16 stat +/- 0.26syst) x 109. After opening the box, we observed zero event. Therefore, we set an upper limit of the branching ratio of the K0L→p0p 0nn&d1; decay at 1.1 x 10-6 at the 90% confidence level.

Book A Search for the Rare Decay of a Charged B Meson Into a Charged K Meson a Neutrino and an Anti neutrino

Download or read book A Search for the Rare Decay of a Charged B Meson Into a Charged K Meson a Neutrino and an Anti neutrino written by Joachim Harnois-Déraps and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The document describes a search for the rare decay B[bar] [right arrow] K[bar]vv̄ in a data set of about 230 millions of BB[bar] pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B Factory, via the process e+e- [right arrow] [Upsilon](4S) [right arrow] BB[bar]. The method used selects events in which the B+ meson is fully reconstructed, and looks for a K[bar] in the rest of the event. This is accomplished by applying kinematical and topological restrictions that select B[bar] [right arrow] K[bar]vv̄ events with the largest possible efficiency, while rejecting a maximum amount of background events. The number of background events is estimated from data and from simulated events, while the value of the selection efficiency relies solely on the simulation of B[bar] [right arrow] K[bar]vv̄ decays in the BABAR detector. These two numbers are required in order to set an upper limit on the branching ratio. We analyze a subset of the data sample and provide an interpretation of the result." --

Book Observation of the Decay K bar nu

Download or read book Observation of the Decay K bar nu written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have observed 1 event consistent with the signature expected of the rare decay of a positive kaon to a positive pion and a neutrino anti-neutrino pair. In the examined momentum region of 211 to 230 MeV/c in the center of mass of the kaon we estimated the backgrounds to be about 0.08 ± 0.03 events. From this observation we estimate the branching ratio to be 4.2{sub -3.5}{sup +9.7} x 10−1°. In this presentation I will explain the experiment, and the analysis techniques. I will also discuss the expected improvements in the near future from the analysis of new data sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the scientific enterprise really work to illuminate the origins of life and the universe itself? The quest to understand our universe, how it may have originated and evolved, and especially the conditions that allow it to support the existence of life forms, has been a central theme in religion for millennia and in science for centuries. In the past half-century, in particular, enormous progress in particle and nuclear physics and cosmology has clarified the essential role of imperfections - deviations from perfect symmetry or homogeneity or predictability - in establishing conditions that allow for structure in the universe that can support the development of life. Many of these deviations are tiny and seem mysteriously fine-tuned to allow for life. The goal of this book is to review the recent and ongoing scientific research exploring these imperfections, in a broad-ranging, non-mathematical approach with an emphasis on the intricate tapestry of elegant experiments that bear on the conditions for habitability in our universe. This book makes clear what we know and how we know it, as distinct from what we speculate and how we might test it. At the same time, it attempts to convey a sense of wonderment at the tuning of these imperfections and of the rapid rate at which the boundary between knowledge and speculation is currently shifting.

Book Measurement of Charged Kaon Production by Neutrinos at MINERvA

Download or read book Measurement of Charged Kaon Production by Neutrinos at MINERvA written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged kaon production by atmospheric neutrinos is a background in searches for the proton decay $p \rightarrow K^{+} \bar{\nu}$. This channel is well motivated theoretically, and is favored by Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories. Measurements of neutrino-induced $K^{+}$ production are important inputs for current and future proton decay searches at Super-K, Hyper-K and DUNE. The MINERvA neutrino-nucleus cross section experiment at Fermilab uses timing information to reconstruct $K^{+}$ decay-at-rest events. Differential cross section measurements are presented for both charged- and neutral-current neutrino interactions on plastic scintillator (CH). The cross section in $K^{+}$ kinetic energy, $d\sigma/dT_K$, is observed to be relatively flat between 0 and 500 MeV for both charged- and neutral-current scattering. Its shape is in good agreement with the prediction by the GENIE neutrino event generator when final-state interactions are included. A measurement of the hadronic visible energy in neutral-current $K^{+}$ events is also presented, as proton decay backgrounds come from events with very low visible energy. The spectrum is observed to be slightly softer in data than in \genie. A search for charged-current coherent $K^{+}$ production, $\nu_{\mu}A\rightarrow\mu^{-}K^{+}A$, is also presented. This rare process brings a $K^{+}$ on shell and leaves the target nucleus in its ground state. We find the first experimental evidence for the process at $3\sigma$ significance.

Book Search for the Rare Decay B K Nu Nubar

Download or read book Search for the Rare Decay B K Nu Nubar written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a search for the rare decays B → K+?{bar?} and B° → K°?{bar?} using 459 million B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Flavor-changing neutral-current decays such as these are forbidden at tree level but can occur through one-loop diagrams in the Standard Model (SM), with possible contributions from new physics at the same order. The presence of two neutrinos in the final state makes identification of signal events challenging, so reconstruction in the semileptonic decay channels B → D{sup (*)}l? of the B meson recoiling from the signal B is used to suppress backgrounds. We set an upper limit at the 90% confidence level of 1.3 x 10−5 on the total branching fraction for B+ → K+?{bar {nu}}, and 5.6 x 10−5 for B° → K°{nu}{bar {nu}}. We additionally report partial branching fractions in two ranges of di-neutrino mass squared for B+ → K+{nu}{bar {nu}}.

Book Anomaly Collider Physics And The Quest For New Phenomena At Fermilab

Download or read book Anomaly Collider Physics And The Quest For New Phenomena At Fermilab written by Tommaso Dorigo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Dorigo provides an engaging and insightful perspective on the pursuit of physics discoveries at CDF … Dorigo’s book is thus almost certainly going to be an important source for anyone interested in the history of CDF … It is a personal yet highly informative story of discovery and almost-discovery from the perspective of someone who saw the events firsthand.'Physics TodayFrom the mid-1980s, an international collaboration of 600 physicists embarked on the investigation of subnuclear physics at the high-energy frontier. As well as discovering the top quark, the heaviest elementary particle ever observed, the physicists analyzed their data to seek signals of new physics which could revolutionize our understanding of nature.Anomaly! tells the story of that quest, and focuses specifically on the finding of several unexplained effects which were unearthed in the process. These anomalies proved highly controversial within the large team: to some collaborators they called for immediate publication, while to others their divulgation threatened to jeopardize the reputation of the experiment.Written in a confidential, narrative style, this book looks at the sociology of a large scientific collaboration, providing insight in the relationships between top physicists at the turn of the millennium. The stories offer an insider's view of the life cycle of the 'failed' discoveries that unavoidably accompany even the greatest endeavors in modern particle physics.
