Book Search for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Energy with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Energy with the ATLAS Detector written by Peter Tornambè and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most studied models to extend the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics beyond the electroweak scale. In many supersymmetric models, the lightest supersymmetric particle is stable and can be a suitable candidate for dark matter.\\ This dissertation summarises a search for supersymmetric phenomena produced via the strong or the electroweak interaction leading to final states with two leptons (electrons or muons) of the same electric charge, or three leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum. While the same-sign or three leptons signature is present in many SUSY scenarios, SM processes leading to such events have very small production rates. Therefore, this analysis benefits from a small SM background in the signal regions leading to a good sensitivity especially in SUSY scenarios with compressed mass spectra or in which the R-parity is not conserved. The search was performed with cut-and-count analyses exploiting the full dataset recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during the years 2015 and 2016, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectations is observed. The results are interpreted in several simplified supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, extending the exclusion limits from previous searches.\\ Since no sign of SUSY particles has been observed, this dissertation presents prospects for a search for compressed electroweakino production. This supersymmetric scenario is particularly challenging for LHC experiments since the products of the decay chain have low energies and are therefore difficult to detect. Results are obtained with a parameterised simulation of the ATLAS detector performances at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV and for an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$.\\

Book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector

Download or read book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector written by Chiara Rizzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis documents two of the highest-profile searches for supersymmetry performed at the ATLAS experiment using up to 80/fb of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during its Run 2 (2015-2018). The signals of interest feature a high multiplicity of jets originating from the hadronisation of b-quarks and large missing transverse momentum, which constitutes one of the most promising final state signatures for discovery of new phenomena at the LHC. The first search is focused on the strong production of a pair of gluinos, with each gluino decaying into a neutralino and a top-antitop-quark pair or a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. The second search targets the pair production of higgsinos, with each higgsino decaying into a gravitino and a Higgs boson, which in turn is required to decay into a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. Both searches employ state-of-the-art experimental techniques and analysis strategies at the LHC, resulting in some of the most restrictive bounds available to date on the masses of the gluino, neutralino, and higgsino in the context of the models explored.

Book Third generation SUSY and t t Z production

Download or read book Third generation SUSY and t t Z production written by Josh McFayden and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes searches for new particles predicted by the super symmetry (SUSY) theory, a theory extending beyond the current Standard Model of particle physics, using the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The thesis focuses on searches for stop and sbottom squarks, the SUSY partners of the top and bottom quarks, which are expected to be lighter than the partners of the first and second generation quarks and therefore good candidates for the first evidence of SUSY. It describes novel techniques for estimating and rejecting the Standard-Model backgrounds to searches for these particles. It also includes an independent analysis seeking to constrain the Standard Model ttZ background process, which also represents the first ATLAS search for this rare process at the LHC. The stop squark analysis described, with substantial leading contributions from the author, is the first search for these particles at the LHC to use the jets plus missing transverse energy plus 0-lepton signature and provides the world's best limits on the stop mass for light neutralino LSPs. All in all, the thesis describes three different world-leading analyses in both Standard Model and SUSY physics and therefore represents a major contribution to the field.

Book Supersymmetric Beasts and Where to Find Them

Download or read book Supersymmetric Beasts and Where to Find Them written by Marco Valente and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-05 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an extensive overview of the Standard Model and of the theory and phenomenology of Supersymmetry, this book describes the recent development of the ATLAS Particle Flow algorithm, a hadronic reconstruction technique aiming at enhancing the sensitivity of the experiment to new physics through the combination of the information from different ATLAS sub-detectors. The first ever ATLAS strong SUSY search exploiting this technique is also described, reporting the results and exclusion limits obtained using the complete proton-proton collision dataset recorded by the ATLAS experiment during the second Run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Book Search for Strong Production of Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Missing Transverse Momentum and at Least Three B jets at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Strong Production of Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Missing Transverse Momentum and at Least Three B jets at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the results of a search for strong production of supersymmetric particles in 20.1 fb1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed separately in events with either zero or at least one high-pT lepton (electron or muon), large missing transverse momentum, high jet multiplicity and at least three jets identified as originated from the fragmentation of a b-quark. No excess is observed with respect to the Standard Model predictions. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models involving gluinos and scalar top and bottom quarks, as well as a mSUGRA/CMSSM model. Lastly, gluino masses up to 1340 GeV are excluded, depending on the model, significantly extending the previous ATLAS limits.

Book The Search for Supersymmetry in Hadronic Final States Using Boosted Object Reconstruction

Download or read book The Search for Supersymmetry in Hadronic Final States Using Boosted Object Reconstruction written by Giordon Stark and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents one of the most comprehensive and in-depth studies of the use of Lorentz-boosted hadronic final state systems in the search for signals of Supersymmetry conducted to date at the Large Hadron Collider. A thorough assessment is performed of the observables that provide enhanced sensitivity to new physics signals otherwise hidden under an enormous background of top quark pairs produced by Standard Model processes. This is complemented by an ingenious analysis optimization procedure that allowed for extending the reach of this analysis by hundreds of GeV in mass of these hypothetical new particles. Lastly, the combination of both deep, thoughtful physics analysis with the development of high-speed electronics for identifying and selecting these same objects is not only unique, but also revolutionary. The Global Feature Extraction system that the author played a critical role in bringing to fruition represents the first dedicated hardware device for selecting these Lorentz-boosted hadronic systems in real-time using state-of-the-art processing chips and embedded systems.

Book Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with a Photon Lepton and Missing Transverse Energy

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with a Photon Lepton and Missing Transverse Energy written by Yutaro Iiyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations.

Book A Search for New Physics in Final States With Two Opposite SignSame Flavor Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Energy InProton Proton Collisions with a Center of Mass Energy of 13 TeV

Download or read book A Search for New Physics in Final States With Two Opposite SignSame Flavor Leptons Jets and Missing Transverse Energy InProton Proton Collisions with a Center of Mass Energy of 13 TeV written by Charles Vincent Welke and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is performed in final states with Z$\rightarrow\ell\ell$, jets, and missing transverse momentum using data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2015 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3~\fbinv of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$\TeV. Signal regions are defined to maximize sensitivity to new physics including one to search where ATLAS reported a 3.0~$\sigma$ excess at 8~TeV. The observations in all regions are consistent with the predicted standard model backgrounds, and the results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of supersymmetry.

Book Search for Supersymmetry in Final States with Multiple Bottom Quarks with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry in Final States with Multiple Bottom Quarks with the ATLAS Detector written by Meisam Ghasemi Bostanabad and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical development of the Standard Model in the 1960s and 1970s has led to the discovery of its missing piece, the Higgs boson, at the ATLAS experiment (together with its sister experiment, CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012. In order to solve the problem of large quantum corrections to the leading expansion of the Higgs boson mass, additional symmetries need to be added to the Standard Model. A possible solution to this problem of Higgs mass quantum corrections is the theory of Supersymmetry, which includes partners to each Standard Model particle, such as gluinos, squarks, and the lightest supersymmetric particle. This dissertation describes a search for pair-produced gluinos, where each gluino decays via a top squark or a bottom squark to the lightest supersymmetric particle (a neutralino). Events which contain a large jet multiplicity in the final state (i.e. at least four jets of which at least three must be b-jets), and large amounts of missing transverse energy, are obtained for further studies. The dataset used for this search includes 139 fb^−1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the ATLAS experiment between 2015 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV. No significant excess is observed in data above the Standard Model backgrounds, and gluino masses up to 2.3 TeV for both the Gtt and the Gbb models are excluded at a 95% confidence level. This dissertation also contains an overview of, and the author's work on, the data quality monitoring of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter during 2017 data taking.

Book Search for Dark Matter with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Search for Dark Matter with the ATLAS Detector written by Johanna Gramling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses searches for Dark Matter at the CERN’s LHC, the world’s most powerful accelerator. It introduces the relevant theoretical framework and includes an in-depth discussion of the Effective Field Theory approach to Dark Matter production and its validity, as well as an overview of the formalism of Simplified Dark Matter models. Despite overwhelming astrophysical evidence for Dark Matter and numerous experimental efforts to detect it, the nature of Dark Matter still remains a mystery and has become one of the hottest research topics in fundamental physics. Two searches for Dark Matter are presented, performed on data collected with the ATLAS experiment. They analyze missing-energy final states with a jet or with top quarks. The analyses are explained in detail, and the outcomes and their interpretations are discussed, also in view of the precedent analysis of theoretical approaches. Given its depth of coverage, the book represents an excellent reference guide for all physicists interested in understanding the theoretical and experimental considerations relevant to Dark Matter searches at the LHC.

Book Search for Exotic Mono jet Events

Download or read book Search for Exotic Mono jet Events written by Valerio Rossetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes in detail the search for new phenomena in mono-jet final states with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state is considered the golden channel in the searches for large extra dimensions (LED) but also allows access to a very rich SUSY-related phenomenology pertaining to the production of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS), SUSY Dark Matter candidates, GMSB SUSY models with very light gravitino masses, as well as stop an sbottom pair production in compressed scenarios (with nearly degenerated squarks and the lightest neutralino), and also invisible Higgs searches, among others. Here, a number of these scenarios are explored. The measurements presented yield new powerful constraints on the existence of extra spatial dimensions, the pair production of WIMPs, and also provide the best limit to date on the gravitino mass.
