Download or read book SEAL of Honor written by Gary L Williams and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lt.Michael Patrick Murphy, a Navy SEAL, earned the Medal of Honor on 28 June 2005 for his bravery during a fierce fight with the Taliban in the remote mountains of eastern Afghanistan. The first to receive the nation's highest military honor for service in Afghanistan, Lt. Murphy was also the first naval officer to earn the medal since the Vietnam War, and the first SEAL to be honored posthumously. A young man of great character, he is the subject of Naval Special Warfare courses on character and leadership, and an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, naval base, school, post office, ball park, and hospital emergency room have been named in his honor. A bestselling book by the sole survivor of Operation Red Wings, Marcus Luttrell, has helped make Lt. Murphy's SEAL team's fateful encounter with the Taliban one of the Afghan war's best known engagements. Published on the 5th anniversary of the engagement, SEAL of Honor also tells the story of that fateful battle, but it does so from a very different perspective being focused on the life of Lt. Murphy. This biography uses his heroic action during this deadly firefight in Afghanistan, as a window on his character and attempts to answer why Lt. Murphy readily sacrificed his life for his comrades. SEAL of Honor is the story of a young man, who was noted by his peers for his compassion and for his leadership being guided by an extraordinary sense of duty, responsibility, and moral clarity. In tracing Lt. Murphy's journey from a seemingly ordinary life on New York's Long Island, to that remote mountainside a half a world away, SEAL of Honor will help readers understand how he came to demonstrate the extraordinary heroism and selfless leadership that earned him the nation's highest military honor. Moreover, the book brings the Afghan war back to the home front, focusing on Lt. Murphy's tight knit family and the devastating effect of his death upon them as they watched the story of Operation Red Wings unfold in the news. The book attempts to answer why Lt. Murphy's service to his country and his comrades was a calling faithfully answered, a duty justly upheld, and a life, while all too short, well-lived.

Book By Honor Bound

Download or read book By Honor Bound written by Tom Norris and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April of 1972, SEAL Lieutenant Tom Norris risked his life in an unprecedented ground rescue of two American airmen who were shot down behind enemy lines in North Vietnam, a feat for which he would be awarded the Medal of Honor--an award that represents the pinnacle of heroism and courage. Just six months later, Norris was sent on a dangerous special reconnaissance mission that would take his team deep into enemy territory. On that mission, they engaged a vastly superior force. In the running gun battle that ensued, Lieutenant Norris was severely wounded; a bullet entered his left eye and exited the left side of his head. SEAL Petty Officer Mike Thornton, under heavy fire, fought his way back onto a North Vietnamese beach to rescue his officer. This was the first time Tom and Mike had been on a combat mission together. Mike's act of courage and loyalty marks the only time in modern history that the Medal of Honor has been awarded in a combat action where one recipient received the Medal for saving the life of another. By Honor Bound is the story of Tom Norris and Mike Thornton, two living American heroes who grew up very differently, entered military service and the Navy SEAL teams for vastly different reasons, and were thrown together for a single combat mission--a mission that would define their lives from that day forward.

Book Navy SEAL Dogs

Download or read book Navy SEAL Dogs written by Mike Ritland and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before there was Max, there was Mike. A true story much like the touching movie, Navy SEAL Dogs explores the incomparable relationship between trainer and military dog. From the author of Team Dog, Trident K9 Warriors gave readers an inside look at the Navy SEAL teams' elite K9 warriors-who they are, how they are trained, and the extreme missions they undertake to save lives. From detecting explosives to eliminating the bad guys, these powerful dogs are also some of the smartest and highest skilled working animals on the planet. Mike Ritland's job is to train them. This special edition re-telling presents the dramatic tale of how Ritland discovered his passion and grew up to become the trainer of the nation's most elite military working dogs. Ritland was a smaller-than-average kid who was often picked-on at school-which led him to spend more time with dogs at a young age. After graduating BUD/S training-the toughest military training in the world-to become a SEAL, he was on combat deployment in Iraq when he saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he'd found his true calling. Ritland started his own company to train and supply working and protection dogs for the U.S. Government, Department of Defense, and other clients. He also started the Warrior Dog Foundation to help retired Special Operations dogs live long and happy lives after their service. Navy SEAL Dogs is the true story of how Mike Ritland grew from a skinny, bullied child, to a member of our nation's most elite SEAL Teams, to the trainer of the world's most highly skilled K9 warriors.

Book Seal Stories

Download or read book Seal Stories written by Brett W. Hanson and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher, mentor, father, and motivator, Brett Hanson grew up poor in inner city Detroit until his single mother moved the family to North Carolina to improve their situation. But life only got harder for him. While his mother earned her degree in computer science, working three jobs and raising two kids, Brett became a proficient liar, thief, manipulator, and petty criminal. When they moved back to Michigan, he continued lying and stealing, but also started using drugs and alcohol regularly. He decided to transform his life after spending three homeless months alone and strung out on cheap drugs, nearly committing suicide on a dark, rainy night in August 1986. His path toward stardom was long and slow, but - fortunately for readers - also simple and repeatable. After finishing high school by the skin of his teeth Brett enlisted in the toughest military training in the world: the Navy Seal teams. His six years in the teams taught him many things, including the importance of setting high goals, believing in oneself, intentionally developing physical and mental toughness, and turning spectacular failure into future success. But the first important lesson he learned is the primary American lesson: You will succeed: Work hard. And that is exactly what he did to earn an intelligence leadership position in Alpha platoon during two tours of duty in Central and South America, a Navy Achievement Medal during the Unitas Goodwill Cruise (for impromptu leadership during an international Mission Planning seminar for high-level officers in Montevideo, Uruguay). After giving up a promising career to become a teacher and youth mentor, he graduated from the University of Montana with High Honors and is currently striving to achieve Stardom in the classroom by volunteering to teach and mentor the most reluctant learners while supporting rigorous national expectations for all students. Brett Hanson knows how to reach struggling young people because he was one. Accepting the responsibility of developing a system to solve the growing epidemic of apathy, ineptitude, and low confidence has become his life's mission, his Service. In addition to writing Seal Stories, Brett Hanson has started Hanson Education Services to provide dynamic, Common Core aligned instructional curriculum resources such as Grammarology: A Musical Study of English Grammar and Mechanics; The Four Levels of Writing (a sequential writing curriculum); and Library 458, a Lexile-based, reading strategy program to dramatically increase students' reading skills based on best practices research as well as an equally reliable source: what kids say works. He is currently working on his second book titled The Teacher's Promise. All this work, as well as Brett Hanson's classroom web page, can be viewed at www.hansoneducationservices.com
