Geauga Lake had been a summertime escape since the 1870s, but by the 1960s it had fallen on hard times. The businessmen's company, Funtime, Inc., transformed the aging facility into a modern amusement park and established a reputation as an innovative operator in one of the nation's most competitive amusement park markets. Geauga Lake became the first park with two looping roller coasters and the first to integrate a full-scale water park, Boardwalk Shores. The company broke even more new ground in 1988 when it resurrected a classic roller coaster design to construct Raging Wolf Bobs. Book excerpt: Drawing on cultural associations with bodies of water, the spectacle of pretty women, and the appeal of the concept of “family-friendly” productions, performative aquatic spectacles portray water as an exotic fantasy environment exploitable for the purpose of entertainment. In Swim Pretty, Jennifer A. Kokai reveals the influential role of aquatic spectacles in shaping cultural perceptions of aquatic ecosystems in the United States over the past century. Examining dramatic works in water and performances at four water parks, Kokai shows that the evolution of these works and performances helps us better understand our ever-changing relationship with the oceans and their inhabitants. Kokai sorts the regard for and harnessing of water in aquatic spectacles into three categories—natural, tamed, and domesticated—and discusses the ways in which these modes of water are engaged in the performances throug an aesthetics of descension. Ultimately, this study links the uncritical love of aquatic spectacles to a disregard for the rights of marine animals and lack of concern for the marine environment.

While many of these productions are still made in southern California, the last twenty years have seen new production centers emerge in the US, Canada and other locations worldwide. Global Hollywood has been made possible by this growing number of Local Hollywoods: locations equipped with the requisite facilities, resources and labor, as well as the political will and tax incentives, to attract and retain high-budget, Hollywood-standard projects. This new book gives an unprecedented insight into how the Gold Coast became the first outpost of Hollywood in Australia. When a combination of forces drove Hollywood studios and producers to work outside California, the Gold Coast's unique blend of government tax support, innovative entrepreneurs and diverse natural settings made it a perfect choice to host Hollywood productions. "Local Hollywood" makes an essential contribution to the field of film and media studies, as well as giving film buffs a behind-the-scenes tour of the film industry.

  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Seeing Century written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century, with all its turbulence and change, its conflicts and its discoveries was, perhaps above all, the century of cinema, and The Seeing Century offers an innovative, international, and interdisciplinary exploration of the role cinema plays in contemporary life and culture, and the complex and fascinating relationship between screen images and our changing concepts of personal and national identity. Rejecting the compartmentalisation that has traditionally marked film studies, and confronting an impressively eclectic range of material, fifteen essays by leading academics from around the world cut across ‘divergent’ cultures, languages, and genres: mainstream Hollywood rubs shoulders with low-budget Icelandic or Sicilian cinema, and the popular and the esoteric feature alongside each other. In this way, the reader is offered a stimulating overview which directly addresses the contradictions and ambiguities inherent in the relationship between film and identity, and reveals the vibrancy of contemporary film debate, to which The Seeing Century makes an important and thought-provoking contribution.

  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book The Colony written by Jillian Weise and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugenics, body horror, eros, and medical ethics collide is this “ambitious, provocative, and wildly inventive” dystopian satire (Publishers Weekly). Anne Hatley is a sharp-witted and acerbic young teacher in need of a reprieve from the drudgery of work and a tedious relationship. She accepts an invitation to the nation’s largest research colony, where DNA pioneer James D. Watson hopes to “cure” Anne of a rare gene that affects her bone growth: She is missing a leg, and walks with a prosthesis. Though getting along fine, she’s being pressured to pioneer an experimental procedure, and be the first patient to generate a new limb. As Anne falls into a reluctant romance with a fellow colonist—the rakish possessor of the “suicide gene”—and consults a resurrected Charles Darwin and a dugong-bred mermaid, Anne must first come to terms with who she is, before she ever dares to decide who she can become. “Part Wellsian dystopia, part medical mystery, part Hawthornian allegory, and part reality show, The Colony is a potent exploration of ethics in the Age of the Genome (Chris Bachelder, author of The Throwback Special). It’s also a “hilarious, deeply moving, sexy, scary novel . . . about finding love, finding a home, finding family, and all the other doomed experiments we conduct in the hope in making a better human” (Brock Clarke, author of The Price of the Haircut).
