Book excerpt: A Word Fitly Spoken explores significant poetic devices within the four alphabetic acrostic psalms found in Book I of the Psalter. The majority of scholarly opinion has been that these acrostics are poetically and artistically deficient due to the writers' and editors' preoccupation with the alphabetic pattern. In contrast to this view, A Word Fitly Spoken proposes that the acrostic pattern contributes to, rather than detracts from, the poetic artistry of these psalms. In an effort to promote a holistic, canonical reading of the four acrostic poems within Book I of the Psalter, this study also examines the linguistic and grammatical connections within the text. Such a close reading repeatedly demonstrates the emotive power and the imagination of this literature in contradiction to its supposedly stiff, wooden nature. A Word Fitly Spoken is attuned to the frequent plays on word and sound that occur throughout these four poems and as such would be useful in graduate courses on biblical interpretation, Hebrew poetry, or the Psalms.

Book Messiah s Alphabet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lisa M Cummins
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2021-10-14
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Messiah s Alphabet written by Lisa M Cummins and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the hidden spiritual significance of the order of the Hebrew alphabet in Psalm 145. Every Hebrew letter holds ancient biblical meanings in its Hebrew name, its hand-written shape, and its numerical value. When God wrote the Bible, He designed certain chapters to be alphabetical acrostics. In an alphabetical acrostic, the first word of the first verse begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The second verse begins with the second letter, and so on through the entire alphabet. Psalm 145 is a magnificent example of the powerful spiritual symbolism of alphabetical acrostics in Scripture. Because Hebrew letters are also numbers, God employs alphabetical acrostics as "signals" that certain scriptures contain elementary or foundational spiritual wisdom, presented in an orderly discipleship program for the believer to follow. This book also shows how the ancient meanings of the letters themselves shed additional light on the plain meaning of each verse. No prior knowledge of Hebrew is required to enjoy learning from this book. Every word of Psalm 145 is defined and explained in simple, everyday English, with helpful commentary along the way. Suitable for individual or group study, this book's approach is equally welcoming (and its vocabulary is equally understandable) to those of either Gentile Christian or Messianic Jewish backgrounds.

Book The Oxford Companion to the Bible

Download or read book The Oxford Companion to the Bible written by Bruce M. Metzger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-14 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible has had an immeasurable influence on Western culture, touching on virtually every aspect of our lives. It is one of the great wellsprings of Western religious, ethical, and philosophical traditions. It has been an endless source of inspiration to artists, from classic works such as Michaelangelo's Last Judgment, Handel's Messiah, or Milton's Paradise Lost, to modern works such as Thomas Mann's Joseph and His Brothers or Martin Scorsese's controversial Last Temptation of Christ. For countless generations, it has been a comfort in suffering, a place to reflect on the mysteries of birth, death, and immortality. Its stories and characters are an integral part of the repertoire of every educated adult, forming an enduring bond that spans thousands of years and embraces a vast community of believers and nonbelievers. The Oxford Companion to the Bible provides an authoritative one-volume reference to the people, places, events, books, institutions, religious belief, and secular influence of the Bible. Written by more than 250 scholars from some 20 nations and embracing a wide variety of perspectives, the Companion offers over seven hundred entries, ranging from brief identifications--who is Dives? where is Pisgah?--to extensive interpretive essays on topics such as the influence of the Bible on music or law. Ranging far beyond the scope of a traditional Bible dictionary, the Companion features, in addition to its many informative, factual entries, an abundance of interpretive essays. Here are extended entries on religious concepts from immortality, sin, and grace, to baptism, ethics, and the Holy Spirit. The contributors also explore biblical views of modern issues such as homosexuality, marriage, and anti-Semitism, and the impact of the Bible on the secular world (including a four-part article on the Bible's influence on literature). Of course, the Companion can also serve as a handy reference, the first place to turn to find factual information on the Bible. Readers will find fascinating, informative articles on all the books of the Bible--including the Apocrypha and many other ancient texts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Pseudepigrapha, and the Mishrah. Virtually every figure who walked across the biblical stage is identified here, ranging from Rebekah, Rachel, and Mary, to Joseph, Barabbas, and Jesus. The Companion also offers entries that shed light on daily life in ancient Israel and the earliest Christian communities, with fascinating articles on feasts and festivals, clothing, medicine, units of time, houses, and furniture. Finally, there are twenty-eight pages of full-color maps, providing an accurate, detailed portrait of the biblical world. A vast compendium of information related to scriptures, here is an ideal complement to the Bible, an essential volume for every home and library, the first place to turn for information on the central book of Western culture.

Book How I Love Your Word O Lord

Download or read book How I Love Your Word O Lord written by Laurie Grooman and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How I Love Your Word beckons its readers to drink deeply of the riches contained in Ps 119. Ps 119 is an acrostic poem. Hebrew is a picturesque language, and the letters of Hebrew operate as words themselves. Hence, the meaning of the words is encoded in its Hebrew letters. This fascinating fact led Laurie to carefully examine each verse in this light, and opened up greater insight and prophetic understanding to what the Spirit of God was communicating through the inspired writings of Scripture. Laurie seeks to faithfully interpret Scripture with Scripture to bring a fuller and richer flavor to what is apparent from the textual surface. As you read, the Spirit will bring to your mind other relevant passages to increase your own understanding of this chapter, and your love for our Lord. Come thirsty, and allow the Spirit of God to speak to you. Bring with you a notebook and pen as you traverse these first 80 verses of this magnificent psalm! Laurie Grooman is a life long student of Scripture since she came to Christ as a teenager. During her college years, she studied Koine Greek for nearly two years, which fueled her love for languages. Her educational background is in education and linguistics. She met her husband while studying at the Summer Institute of Linguistics and both she and her husband were members of Wycliffe Bible Translators. She and her husband have been married for over 25 years and have two sons. The two have been active in ministry leadership, with Laurie being involved in Community Bible Study and her husband, a worship leader and songwriter. It was largely through his influence that led Laurie to this study and writing on Ps 119. This is her first book."
