Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stevenson's Heraldry in Scotland (1914) is the most authoritative and most readable modern treatise on the legal and administrative aspects of Scots heraldry and a must for the serious student of the subject. Unfortunately, it is hard to find except at great expense in antiquarian bookshops and on specialist websites. This new edition brings a classic of the field to a new audience at a reasonable price. The two volumes have been amalgamated into one, and slight rearrangements made, but the contents follow almost exactly the Maclehose Glasgow edition. The several colour illustrations could not be reproduced here except as half-tones, but are available for download at www.brucedurie.co.uk/books.htm. John Horne Stevenson MBE, KStJ, KC (1855-1939), was an advocate and genealogical lawyer. Book excerpt: This book argues that the 'first' Scottish Enlightenment was championed by minority groups traditionally assumed to have been backward-looking and conservative--Jacobites, Episcopalians, and Catholics--and that it resulted in a dramatic transformation of how Scots understood their history.

Download or read book The Orders of Knighthood and the Formation of the British Honours System 1660 1760 written by Antti Matikkala and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Sheds considerable new light on the nature, development and functions of the orders in a key phase of their history, and goes a long way to explaining how such archaic institutions could flourish in a culture that is commonly thought anti-traditional and especially hostile to the "middle ages"'. Professor JONATHAN BOULTON, University of Notre Dame. This is the first comprehensive study to set the British orders of knighthood properly into the context of the honours system - by analysing their political, social and cultural functions from the Restoration of the monarchy to the end of George II's reign. It examines the revival of the Order of the Garter and the proposals to establish the Orders of the Royal Oak and the Esquires of the Martyred King at the Restoration, the foundation (1687) and the revival (1703-4) of the Order of the Thistle as well as the foundation of the Order of the Bath (1725). It establishes just how central a part the orders played in the British high political life and its comprehensive and multidimensional approach carefully contrasts the idealistic discourse of virtue and honour to the real workings of the honours system; it also makes the case for the 'Chivalric Enlightenment'. The 'orders over the water', the Garter and the Thistle conferred by the Jacobite claimants, are discussed for the first time in the context of the established British honours system. Overall, the comparison between the socially very restricted British and the increasingly meritocratic Continental orders highlights the isolation of the British honours system from the European tendencies.

Download or read book The Advancement of Learning in Stuart Scotland 1679 89 written by HUGH. OUSTON and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of Scottish thinkers and writers in their political and cultural context. The "advancement of learning" was the term used by late seventeenth-century Scots for intellectual enquiry of all kinds. Encouraged by Stuart patronage, and echoing a Royalist ideology of continuity and order following the chaos of the Civil War, the "Virtuosi", Scottish writers and thinkers, sought to define Scotland's identity. They undertook structured, empirical enquiry into Scottish natural history and geography, human history and antiquities, law and society, while the legal and medical professions developed their status and purpose through institutions such as the Royal College of Physicians and the Advocates' Library. They both complemented and eclipsed the changing intellectual life of the Church and Universities. This book considers the work of leading authors, such as Sir George Mackenzie, Sir Robert Sibbald and Lord Stair, alongside the many other voices engaged in learned research and debate, examining their shared or contrasting philosophy and methods. It shows how a distinctively Scottish take on the "Scientific Revolution" was enhanced by close contacts with the Royal Society and English thinkers, and a conscious membership of the European Republic of Letters.
