Book La science et le monde moderne d Alfred North Whitehead

Download or read book La science et le monde moderne d Alfred North Whitehead written by François Beets and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second international Chromatiques whiteheadiennes conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form "companion" volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program - that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.

Book Science et religion dans la philosophie de Whitehead

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Whitehead s Pancreativism

Download or read book Whitehead s Pancreativism written by Michel Weber and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is one question that any potential reader who suspects that Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) might be important for past, contemporary, and future philosophy inevitably raises: how should I read Whitehead? How can I make sense of this incredibly dense tissue of imaginative systematizing, spread over decades of work in disciplines so different and specialized as algebra, geometry, logic, relativistic physics and philosophy of science? Accordingly, this monograph has two main complementary objectives. The first one is to propose a set of efficient hermeneutical tools to get the reader started. These straightforward tools provide answers that are highly coherent and probably the most applicable to Whitehead's entire corpus. The second objective is to illustrate how the several parts of Process and Reality are interconnected, something that all commentators have either failed to recognise or only incompletely acknowledged.

Book Alfred North Whitehead Philosopher Of Time

Download or read book Alfred North Whitehead Philosopher Of Time written by Remy Lestienne and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-03-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947), a mathematician and logician by training, was the author of highly original works at the crossroads of science and philosophy which explore the nature of the world around us and its temporal flow.Convinced that everyday terms distort reality, Whitehead invented or borrowed terms more appropriate to his project. The word 'Process', which gives its title to his most famous work Process and Reality (1929), is central to his thinking. Process introduces his vision of nature as a succession of crystallizations, each of which proves the finite granularity of time: the instant does not exist. It also implies a confrontation with the theory of relativity and quantum physics. Whitehead's perspective allows for the occurrence of creative novelties, but necessitates that the world cooperates with a deity, the role of which is examined in this book's last chapter. In Alfred North Whitehead, Philosopher of Time, the author mixes biographical elements with intellectual advances, from logicism to philosophies of nature. A compelling introduction to Whitehead's demanding work, this book deciphers a metaphysical landscape often considered too abstract to be approachable, but points out the philosopher's imperfections with respect to the scientific advances of our time.

Book A Critique of the Philosophy of Being of Alfred North Whitehead in the Light of Thomistic Philosophy

This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ideas, good and bad, are productive, and a teacher of ideas can have a vast influence in the propagating of good and bad ideas. We have only to review the influence of German Idealism upon German and English Romanticism to see this realized. Similarly, today, in the United States, we are reaping the fruit, good and bad, of ideas that have been sown during the past several decades. Some of them we accept, some we reject. All of them deserve our investigation, insofar as it is within our power to investigate them in order that, as followers of truth, we may sift the good from the bad."--From the preface.

Book Edinburgh Companion to Twentieth Century Philosophies

This book was released on 2007-06-19 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Companion is organized into two sections, each one of which reflects the developments of the Anglo-American Analytic and the Continental European philosophical traditions respectively. An appendix presents the main accomplishments of non-Western philosophies in the same time frame. Each section discusses the main movements and fields of the discipline throughout the century. The authors have maintained a balance between the historian's commitment to breadth and accuracy with the commitment of the systematic philosopher to the engaged point of view and to critical reflection. The result is a distinctive reference book made up of a series of philosophical studies -an invaluable companion to anyone who is searching for a panoramic but also reliable and challenging presentation of the philosophical ideas which shaped the last century.

Book Science and Faith within Reason

Download or read book Science and Faith within Reason written by Dr Jaume Navarro and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists, historians, philosophers and theologians often engage in debates on the limitations and mutual interactions of their respective fields of study. Serious discussions are often overshadowed by the mass-produced popular and semi-popular literature on science and religion, as well as by the political agendas of many of the actors in these debates. For some, reducing religion and science to forms of social discourse is a possible way out from epistemological overlapping between them; yet is there room for religious faith only when science dissolves into one form of social discourse? The religion thus rescued would have neither rational legitimisation nor metaphysical validity, but if both scientific and religious theories try to make absolute claims on all possible aspects of reality then conflict between them seems almost inevitable. In this book leading authors in the field of science and religion, including William Carroll, Steve Fuller, Karl Giberson and Roger Trigg, highlight the oft-neglected and profound philosophical foundations that underlie some of the most frequent questions at the boundary between science and religion: the reality of knowledge, and the notions of creation, life and design. In tune with Mariano Artigas’s work, the authors emphasise that these are neither religious nor scientific but serious philosophical questions.

Book Whitehead and Continental Philosophy in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Whitehead and Continental Philosophy in the Twenty First Century written by Jeremy D. Fackenthal and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead, a speculative philosopher from the first half of the twentieth century, converses and entangles itself with continental philosophers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries around the question of a sustainable civilization in the present. Chapters are focused around economic and environmental sustainability, questions of how technology and systems relate to this sustainability, relationships between human and nonhuman entities, relationships among humans, and how larger philosophical questions lead one to think differently about what the terms sustainable and civilization mean. The book aims to uncover and explore ways in which the combination of these philosophies might provide the “dislocations” within thought that lead to novel ways of being and acting in the world.
