This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Progress and School Facts The report from which this sentence is quoted, A Bureau of Child Hygiene, was first given out by Health Commissioner Darlington at a joint session of public education associations and the International Congress on Tuberculosis, at Washington, Octo ber, 1908. It showed that more law was not necessary for parents of 96% of I400 children and that the break-down of physical ex amination was due, not to the fact that it was under the health department, but to administrative weaknesses which were easily corrected in the case of the i4oo children studied, by instruction of mothers and by facilitating treatment of children found to have easily removable defects. Instead of supporting the con tentions mentioned in the rejoinder, it proved that substituting efficiency for inefficiency in the department of health had ac complished in three schools the results contemplated by the passage of additional laws and by the transfer 0f examination to the department of education. Book Outlines of the History of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Education Classic Reprint written by William B. Aspinwall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education This little volume of studies has been prepared as a guide to the study of the History of Education for students in col leges and normal schools, with the hope that from out of the maze of facts and events which surround and obscure the sub ject, they may by its aid gain a clearer understanding of the development of educational thought and practices. Most books that deal with this broadest of historical subjects do not marshal the facts contributing to progress in education so that a definite tendency or purpose or result can be discerned. As a matter of value and profit, it is not so important to the student to know the facts as it is to know the bearing of the facts upon the movement, to understand their dependence upon what has gone before as well as upon the actual conditions surrounding them and to see their influence upon the develop ment of the movement. We all know that any type of edu cational practice is but the outward expression of the thoughts and ideals and purposes which guide one generation in the rearing of the next, while these thoughts, ideals, and purposes are, in their turn, born of the national life and civilization in which they have matured. Now, it is always a di cult thing for the student to pick out the essential and contributing facts and to discover their meaning, and usually, working by himself, he either fails to get very much true significance from them or else he gets it at very great expense of thought and efi'ort. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress in High School Education in Massachusetts The observers of glaciers in Switzerland sometimes set up a straight line of stake's across the surface of the ice field, and presently finding the stakes have moved and the straight line has become a curve, measure the movement of each stake and thus discover the fact and the law of the glacier's motion. One is a little surprised on learning that his unassisted observation has failed to detect a movement in the glacier varying from 300 to 600 feet a year, or from one to two feet a day, and that these mountainous piles of ice, apparently as firm as the rocks that support them, are in reality gliding torrents of vast and resistless energy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation Mr. Best to apply the principles here outlined to English conditions, the wide circulation it certainly deserves. But it is not the mere honour of recognition which constitutes the chief ground of my pleasure. I have grown too old in the struggle for educational ideals to let such personal satisfaction turn my head. Much more important for me is the thought that in so far as other great nations occupy themselves with the spiritual and intellectual elevation of their people, Germany too will reap the benefit of their efforts. The rivalry of two countries in the matter of education is far more welcome, far more profitable, and far more glorious than any competition in armaments. When two neighbours are each truly educated both may dare to live in peace and to devote all their strength to the improvement of their own homes and their own families. The more progress a nation makes internally, the more peaceably will i settle all external differences; and a man' can do bisli country no greater service than by exerting his powers to help other nations in their struggle for moral and intellectual progress, that they may not only uphold the cause of liberty, but may be themselves animated by a spirit of justice and goodwill.
