Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The works in this catalogue, which include such well-known groups as Jokes and Car Hoods, illustrate the extraordinary variety of techniques and media Richard Prince uses to grapple with American myths in commercials and everyday culture. The strategies underlying the work, such as the serialisation, the sequencing and the repetition of constant and variable elements, is elaborated on by the American author Paul Black. While Kerstin Stakemeier examines the economic and political context of Prince's work in her contribution by means of selected examples, Yilmaz Dziewior explains the concept of the exhibition in Bregenz in 2014. The artist himself also has his say in the catalogue with an essay in which he formulates his artistic thinking in a most informative way.Large-format illustrations of early works and in particular the new pieces realised for Bregenz, as well as a carefully compiled biography and bibliography, offer a comprehensive insight into the American artist's work, which has influenced contemporary art for decades.English and German text.

Book The French Revolution and Social Democracy

Download or read book The French Revolution and Social Democracy written by Jean-Numa Ducange and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond France’s own national historiography, the French Revolution was a fundamental point of reference for the nineteenth-century socialist movement. As Jean-Numa Ducange tells us, while Karl Marx never wrote his planned history of the Revolution, from the 1880s the German and Austrian social-democrats did embark on such a project. This was an important moment for both Marxism and the historiography of the French Revolution. Yet it has not previously been the object of any overall study. The French Revolution and Social Democracy studies both the social-democratic readings of the foundational revolutionary event, and the place of this history in militant culture, as seen in sources from party educationals, to leaflets and workers’ calendars. First published in 2012 as La Révolution française et la social-démocratie. Transmissions et usages politiques de l’histoire en Allemagne et Autriche, 1889–1934 by Presses Universitaires de Rennes in 2012.

Book excerpt: How East German artists made their country’s experimental art scene a form of (counter) public life. Experimental artists in the final years of the German Democratic Republic did not practice their art in the shadows, on the margins, hiding away from the Stasi’s prying eyes. In fact, as Sara Blaylock shows, many cultivated a critical influence over the very bureaucracies meant to keep them in line, undermining state authority through forthright rather than covert projects. In Parallel Public, Blaylock describes how some East German artists made their country’s experimental art scene a form of (counter) public life, creating an alternative to the crumbling collective underpinnings of the state. Blaylock examines the work of artists who used body-based practices—including performance, film, and photography—to create new vocabularies of representation, sharing their projects through independent networks of dissemination and display. From the collective films and fashion shows of Erfurt's Women Artists Group, which fused art with feminist political action, to Gino Hahnemann, the queer filmmaker and poet who set nudes alight in city parks, these creators were as bold in their ventures as they were indifferent to state power. Parallel Public is the first work of its kind on experimental art in East Germany to be written in English. Blaylock draws on extensive interviews with artists, art historians, and organizers; artist-made publications; official reports from the Union of Fine Artists; and Stasi surveillance records. As she recounts the role culture played in the GDR’s rapid decline, she reveals East German artists as dissenters and witnesses, citizens and agents, their work both antidote to and diagnosis of a weakening state.

Book Staging West German Democracy

Download or read book Staging West German Democracy written by Jan Uelzmann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staging West German Democracy examines how political “founding discourses” of the nascent Federal Republic (FRG) were reflected, reinforced, and actively manufactured by the Federal government in conjunction with the West German, state-controlled newsreel system, the Deutsche Wochenschau. By looking at the institutional history of the Deutsche Wochenschau and its close relationship to the Federal Press Office, Jan Uelzmann traces the Adenauer administration's project of maintaining a “government channel” in an increasingly diverse, de-centralized, and democratic West German media landscape. Staging West German Democracy reconstructs the company's integral role in the planning, production, and dissemination of pro-government PR, and through detailed analyses reveals the films to celebrate the FRG as an economically successful and internationally connected democracy under Adenauer's leadership. Apart from providing election propaganda for Adenauer's CDU party, these films provided an important stabilizing factor for the FRG's project of explaining and promoting democracy to its citizens, and of defining its public image against the backdrops of the Third Reich past and a competing, contemporary incarnation of German nationhood, the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In this regard, Staging West German Democracy adds in important ways to our understanding of the media's role in the West German nation building process.

Book Notions of Temporalities in Artistic Practice

Download or read book Notions of Temporalities in Artistic Practice written by Anamarija Batista and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on notions of temporality in artistic practice. It gathers texts by ten cultural scientists who, by reflecting on the work of an artist or another art- or architecture-related protagonist, examine the subject of temporality, its reference systems, its framework, and its consequential phenomena. The contributors pose questions about the specific characteristics and influences of temporalities. The various approaches brought together in the volume enable the reader to delve into particular cases in order to contextualize the question of how temporality initiates action and structures of perception, weaves itself into these structures, and thereby shapes our presence, affecting our bodies, our senses, and our communication.
