Book English in the Nordic Countries

Download or read book English in the Nordic Countries written by Elizabeth Peterson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People in the Nordic states – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland – rank as among the most proficient speakers of English in the world. In this unique volume, international experts explore how this came to be, what English usage and integration looks like in different spheres of society and the economy in these countries, and the implications of this linguistic phenomenon for language attitudes and identity, for the region at large, and for English in Europe and around the world. Led by Elizabeth Peterson and Kristy Beers Fägersten, contributors provide a historical overview to the subject, synthesize the latest research, illustrate the roles of English with original case studies from diverse communities and everyday settings, and offer transnational insights critically and in conversation with the situation in other Nordic states. This comprehensive text is the first book of its kind and will be of interest to advanced students and researchers of World/Global Englishes and English as a lingua franca, language contact and dialect studies/language varieties, language policy, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and Nordic/Scandinavian and European studies.

Book The Scandinavian Influence on the English Language

Download or read book The Scandinavian Influence on the English Language written by Johannes Huhmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 71 von 80, University of Manchester (School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures), course: Introduction to Middle English Language, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the history of English, the language came into contact with different speech communities. Influences of Celtic, Latin, Scandinavian and French left their mark from the beginning in Anglo-Saxon times onwards, and the colonial expansion of the British Empire in the last three centuries resulted in the contact with even more speech communities. Through these language contacts, English changed a lot - it showed the tendency to incorporate foreign influences, especially lexical ones, more likely in the first place; its grammar changed from being and analytic one towards being synthetic; and in terms of the lexicon, it changed from being a Germanic to a partly Romanic influenced language. In this essay, I want to examine the influence of the Scandinavian language on English and to what extent it was responsible for the general changes mentioned above. 45 per cent of the commoner words and 25 per cent of the general lexis1 in the present day English lexicon are a result of the language contact between Old English and Old Norse during the period of Scandinavian invasions and settlement in the eighth and ninth century - but the lexical influences are only one result of the language contact and I will try to show the other effects the Scandinavian influence had on English as well. Abbreviations The Abbreviations I will use in this paper are "EME" for Early Middle English, "ModE" for Modern English, "ON" for Old Norse, "OE" for Old English and "PDE" for Present Day English.

Book Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature

Download or read book Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature written by Virpi Zuck and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-11-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heroic undertaking, this extremely useful encyclopedia covers the literatures of all five Nordic countries as well as Faroese, Inuit, and Sami....is especially valuable in that it brings to light the sophistication and richness of literature in Finland and Iceland...highly recommended. Library Journal The Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature is the only English-language work of its kind. Unlike literary handbooks that cover a single literature, the dictionary covers the literature of the five Nordic countries from the Icelandic sagas to authors active in the 1980s. In addition to 380 individual entries, the volume includes lengthier essays on topics ranging from Inuit Literature to Scandinavian Studies in North America and Britain. Many of the topical articles are unique in that no systematic English-language treatment of the topic has previously appeared in print. Each entry concludes with a list of references and, in the case of author entries, a list of the author's works in the original as well as in English translation. For use in public libraries, small college libraries, as well as larger research libraries, the Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature is a reference tool for the nonspecialist and specialist alike. The bibliographies appended to every article will be of value to students looking for up-to-date secondary literature on an author or a topic, and the listings of English translations should be useful to instructors who teach courses of Scandinavian Literature in English Translation.

Book The Almost Nearly Perfect People

Download or read book The Almost Nearly Perfect People written by Michael Booth and published by Picador. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED THE #1 BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, A WITTY, INFORMATIVE, AND POPULAR TRAVELOGUE ABOUT THE SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES AND HOW THEY MAY NOT BE AS HAPPY OR AS PERFECT AS WE ASSUME Journalist Michael Booth has lived among the Scandinavians for more than ten years, and he has grown increasingly frustrated with the rose-tinted view of this part of the world offered up by the Western media. In this timely book he leaves his adopted home of Denmark and embarks on a journey through all five of the Nordic countries to discover who these curious tribes are, the secrets of their success, and, most intriguing of all, what they think of one another. Why are the Danes so happy, despite having the highest taxes? Do the Finns really have the best education system? Are the Icelanders as feral as they sometimes appear? How are the Norwegians spending their fantastic oil wealth? And why do all of them hate the Swedes? In The Almost Nearly Perfect People Michael Booth explains who the Scandinavians are, how they differ and why, and what their quirks and foibles are, and he explores why these societies have become so successful and models for the world. Along the way a more nuanced, often darker picture emerges of a region plagued by taboos, characterized by suffocating parochialism, and populated by extremists of various shades. They may very well be almost nearly perfect, but it isn't easy being Scandinavian.

Download or read book History of Scandinavia written by Paul Sinding and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preface: "The value of history being so generally appreciated, I need offer no apology for attempting to write such a work as the present, especially as the aim was, not to supplant any previous work, but actually to meet a want which was felt, because no such work existed here. But in submitting to the American and English public my first essay in writing English-to the somewhat ambitious extent of a book, I mean-let me claim some forbearance and kindly criticism, where certain unavoidable difficulties interposed themselves, and have not, perhaps, in every case, even where most earnestly grappled with, been successfully overcome. Notwithstanding that, on the whole, this attempt to make the Scandinavian countries-especially Denmark, my fatherland-better known in the United States, has been a "labor of love," it has, on account of the want of sufficient literary sources and of a thorough familiarity with the English language, by no means been a short and easy undertaking, but has occupied me both morning and evening for a long space of time. Nevertheless, should the result of my labor, the work which I here offer as an Introduction to the History of Scandinavia, be found calculated to promote even a little interest in the subject, my desire and purposes will be fully realized, and the great difficulties under which I have labored, amply rewarded."
