Book The Psychology of Saving

Download or read book The Psychology of Saving written by Karl Erik W‹rneryd and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people save and others with similar incomes and wealth do not. Why? Whilst psychology has devoted little attention to the forward looking dimension of human behavior, it contributes theories and techniques for studying the cognitive, motivational, and social factors that affect saving. The book examines the assumption that man is forward looking and desires to provide for the future. It summarizes theories and behavioral research in the area of saving and explores the psychological insights and findings of economists and interprets them in terms of modern psychology. The Psychology of Saving will be welcomed as a major contribution to economic psychology which brings together research and analysis, developing our understanding about rationality, expectations, and consumer behavior.

Book Saving Smiles Changing Lives

Download or read book Saving Smiles Changing Lives written by Nader Bazzi and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your smile is a reflection of your true self. Dr. Nader Bazzi understands the physical and psychological repercussions of unhealthy teeth, like no other, and he knows that a beautiful smile increases your likelihood of success in life. Dr. Bazzi has a passion to help even the most challenging patients, whose teeth cannot be "saved" by traditional means. Through the use of implant dentistry, a "modern day miracle," he can restore the original function of a lost tooth without negative impact to the rest of your mouth. Not surprisingly, patients who need implant dentistry are fearful of dentists (and are his favorite kind to work with). Dr. Bazzi has done over 1000 implants to date, and likes to educate his patients about the tremendous strides that have been made in dentistry and pain management. He enjoys teaching them that they can be helped--and that they can receive that help without judgment. But above all, I enjoy seeing the transformation these individuals undergo when we work together to resolve years of dental problems.

Book On the Commodity Trail

Download or read book On the Commodity Trail written by Alison Hulme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the journey of eight bargain store objects, Alison Hulme reveals the complex story behind society’s simplest and cheapest commodities. Inspired by Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project, On the Commodity Trail explores the colourful and fascinating histories of everyday objects.Along the way, we observe raw materials on municipal rubbish dumps in China, newly re-made products in the world’s largest wholesale market, and take a journey across the seas, to bargain stores in Europe and North America, arriving finally in the homes of consumers. Weaving together narratives from the people we meet at different parts of the commodity chain – waste peddlers, wholesalers, store owners, and shoppers – the book examines the places and people at the heart of these localized yet immense global networks.Unlike other investigations of commodity chains, this study does not chart a straightforward trajectory from production to consumption. Instead, it demonstrates that the low-end commodity chain is one of constant rupture in which products are made and re-made, blurring the dividing line between producing and consuming. An ethnography of material culture as well as an examination of commodity culture at a time of economic downturn, this deeply-engrossing book makes a unique contribution to our understanding of commodity chains and consumer culture.

Download or read book Myths about Suicide written by Thomas Joiner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, more than a million people die by suicide each year. Yet many of us know very little about a tragedy that may strike our own loved onesÑand much of what we think we know is wrong. This clear and powerful book dismantles myth after myth to bring compassionate and accurate understanding of a massive international killer. Drawing on a fascinating array of clinical cases, media reports, literary works, and scientific studies, Thomas Joiner demolishes both moralistic and psychotherapeutic clichŽs. He shows that suicide is not easy, cowardly, vengeful, or selfish. It is not a manifestation of "suppressed rage" or a side effect of medication. Threats of suicide, far from being idle, are often followed by serious attempts. People who are prevented once from killing themselves will not necessarily try again. The risk for suicide, Joiner argues, is partly genetic and is influenced by often agonizing mental disorders. Vulnerability to suicide may be anticipated and treated. Most important, suicide can be prevented. An eminent expert whose own father's death by suicide changed his life, Joiner is relentless in his pursuit of the truth about suicide and deeply sympathetic to such tragic waste of life and the pain it causes those left behind.

Book Thrift and Its Paradoxes

Download or read book Thrift and Its Paradoxes written by Catherine Alexander and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrift is a central concern for most people, especially in turbulent economic times. It is both an economic and an ethical logic of frugal living, saving and avoiding waste for long-term kin care. These logics echo the ancient ideal of household self-sufficiency, contrasting with capitalism’s wasteful present-focused growth. But thrift now exceeds domestic matters straying across scales to justify public expenditure cuts. Through a wide range of ethnographic contexts this book explores how practices and moralities of thrift are intertwined with austerity, debt, welfare, and patronage across various social and temporal scales and are constantly re-negotiated at the nexus of socio-economic, religious, and kinship ideals and praxis.

Book The Victorians a Very Short Introduction

Download or read book The Victorians a Very Short Introduction written by Martin Hewitt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring The Victorian period may have come to an end over 120 years ago, but the Victorians continue to be a vital presence in the modern world. Contemporary Britain is still in large part Victorian in its transport networks, sewage systems, streets, and houses. Victorian cultural legacies, especially in art, science, and literature, are still celebrated. The first to have to grapple with many of the challenges of modern urban society, we continue to look to the Victorians for inspiration and solace. And we are increasingly aware of the ways their global actions shaped, often for ill, the world around us. Much mythologised, inexhaustibly controversial, the Victorians are an inescapable reference point for understanding the modern histories not just of Britain and its empire, but of the world. In The Victorians: A Very Short Introduction Martin Hewitt offers a guide through the thickets of judgement and debate which have grown around the period and its people, to offer a historical overview of the Victorians and their legacies. He seeks to answer five crucial questions. Why have the Victorians continued occupy such a prominent place in the cultures of not just the anglophone world? How far does it make sense to think of a 64-year period arbitrarily given an identity by the longevity of the Queen as an identifiable historical period in a general sense? How justified are the value-laden versions of the Victorians which argue for the existence of a particular world view called 'Victorianism'? Beyond ideology, what was Victorian Britain actually like DS and in particular, what was distinctive about it? Who were the Victorians DS not just the eminent few, but the population as a whole? And finally, how far and with what results did the Victorians and their culture spread across the globe? In answering these questions, Hewitt cautions against some long-held orthodoxies, throws a light on some less well-known aspects of the period, and urges the importance of understanding the Victorians on their own terms if we are to effectively engage with their legacies. Book Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language

Download or read book Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language written by Susan D. Duncan and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the 21 chapters in this volume reflects a view of language as a dynamic phenomenon with emergent structure, and in each, gesture is approached as part of language, not an adjunct to it. In this, all of the authors have been influenced by David McNeill's methods for studying natural discourse and by his theory of the human capacity for language. The introductory chapter by Adam Kendon contextualizes McNeill’s research paradigm within a history of earlier gesture studies. Chapters in the first section, Language and Cognition, emphasize what McNeill refers to as the intrapersonal plane. Many of the chapters adduce evidence for McNeill's claim that gestures can serve as a window onto the speaker's mind. Chapters in the second section, Environmental Context and Sociality, emphasize the interpersonal plane and exemplify McNeill's focus on how moment-to-moment language use is determined by contextual factors. The final section of the volume, Atypical Minds and Bodies, concerns lessons to be learned from studies of aphasic patients, autistic children, and artificial humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practicing dentistry has a high burn-out rate for many reasons, but the Alliance for Integrity in Dentistry has a solution—one that can transform the daily burdens of practicing dentistry: Dental offices should remain dentist owned, not corporate owned. Dr. Ben Warnock, D.D.S. with Dr. Nader Bazzi D.M.D., created the Alliance for Preserving the Integrity in Dentistry. The Alliance is a group of dentists who have joined forces to help keep dental offices dentist owned and dentist run. The Alliance has become a revolutionary group in the dentistry field. With private practices being bought up by corporations, the solo practitioner and dentist owned group practices are in immediate danger. If the pace of infiltrating corporate dentistry doesn’t meet opposition, the integrity of dentistry and patient dental health are in jeopardy. The Independent Dentist teaches the Alliance Triple-Win, which provides a path to a better way for practicing dentistry so that dentists can minimize stress and optimize satisfaction. Dentists will be able to complete all administrative tasks, help their patients achieve optimal dental and overall health, and still have time to spend with family and friends, and pursue hobbies. These strategies will enrich the field of dentistry while preserving its integrity. The Independent Dentist is a guide for practitioners who want to fulfill the dreams that spurred them toward dentistry in the first place.
