Book Food and Human Rights in Development Legal and institutional dimensions and selected topics

Download or read book Food and Human Rights in Development Legal and institutional dimensions and selected topics written by Wenche Barth Eide and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2005 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to adequate food is firmly established in international human rights law. It is among those most cited in solemn declarations and most violated in practice. In a landmark decision, the 1996 World Food Summit decided to break with the all too familiar right-to-food rhetoric and requested a clarification of "the content of the right to food and the fundamental right of everyone to be free from hunger" and the means for its implementation. Since then much efforts have gone into further conceptualisation of social and cultural rights in general and the right to adequate food in particular. UN agencies, scholars, interested governments and civil society have joined forces in attempting to provide a foundation for national and international follow-up of the recommendations of the World Food Summit, reinforced by the Millennium Development Goals. This first of two volumes provides evidence of some of this work and gives direction for future activities to promote and protect the right to adequate food for all. It has contributions from some 15 authors who have all been directly involved, from different angles, in the advancement of the right to food and related human rights over the past years. Besides introducing the concept of the right to food and elaborating on its theoretical basis and meaning in development, it provides several recent examples from work both at the national and international level to apply it in practical situations, and with a special view to how to go about identifying the corresponding obligations of states and complementary duties and responsibilities of non-state actors and international organisations. Finally, several chapters address the right to food under special circumstances and for special groups needing particular attention. The book is the first of its kind on the right to food as a human right. It is not a textbook but is intended to inform and stimulate further debate among scholars, policy-makers and practitioners and activists alike, on some of the major issues of concern in applying a right-based approach to alleviating food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition, and in promoting access to and consumption of nutritionally adequate, safe and culturally acceptable food on a sustainable basis for all. It is now evident that with the current pace of events the goal set by the WFS and the MDG of halving poverty and hunger by 2015 will not be achieved. There is a growing need to watch some of the possible effects of rapid economic globalisation and market liberalisation on food and nutrition security conditions, and to promote countervailing measures to offset their most negative consequences, particularly for vulnerable groups. The right to food is a first test case of the extent to which the application of economic, social and cultural rights can effectively exert such counterforce in an increasingly economics- and market-driven international climate, and enhance progress towards established goals.

Book Youths in Challenging Situations

Download or read book Youths in Challenging Situations written by Charalambos Tsekeris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates and explores the complex dynamics of youth in contemporary society, especially in troubled and crisis-ridden contexts. On the one hand, teenagers and young adults experience social suffering, marginalisation, gender and ethnic bias, and an increased risk to be radicalised and involved in extremism and related violence. On the other hand, it is shown that young people are resilient, and they have a remarkable ability to adapt and cope with extremely difficult situations. This interesting ambivalence is vividly illustrated by a number of studies in countries as varied as Ethiopia, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Brazil, Hong Kong, Kuwait, India, Israel, Britain, Italy, Malta, Spain, Portugal and Cyprus. Each of the 16 chapters throws a different light on the impact of destabilising circumstances and how youths cope with them in order to gain positive self-esteem and sense of a meaningful life. Overall, the experiences of young people are a distillation of the particular traumas and challenges that their society faces. Understanding those experiences and how they are coped with helps to make sense of all societies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Social Science.

Book Conflict and Peacebuilding in the African Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Conflict and Peacebuilding in the African Great Lakes Region written by Kenneth Omeje and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by genocide, civil war, political instabilities, ethnic and pastoral hostilities, the African Great Lakes Region, primarily Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Burundi, has been overwhelmingly defined by conflict. Kenneth Omeje, Tricia Redeker Hepner, and an international group of scholars, many from the Great Lakes region, focus on the interlocking conflicts and efforts toward peace in this multidisciplinary volume. These essays present a range of debates and perspectives on the history and politics of conflict, highlighting the complex internal and external sources of both persistent tension and creative peacebuilding. Taken together, the essays illustrate that no single perspective or approach can adequately capture the dynamics of conflict or offer successful strategies for sustainable peace in the region.

Book Education as a Humanitarian Response

Download or read book Education as a Humanitarian Response written by Gonzalo Retamal and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1998 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanitarian emergencies in, for example, Rwanda, Somalia and Bosnia, are becoming increasingly drawn-out. We are now witnessing devastating situations which can go on for months or years. In view of the significant psychological damage which can occur to refugees during emergency periods, education can no longer be seen as an optional extra: the quality of the education provided at these times can be crucial to a nation's rebirth. In this extraordinary book, the contributors (all of whom have been involved in humanitarian crises) outline how best to set up and carry out practical education under extreme mental and financial pressure.
