Book Saudi Arabia s Misguided Oil Strategy

Download or read book Saudi Arabia s Misguided Oil Strategy written by Mamdouh G. Salameh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia has been instrumental in the collapse of the crude oil prices by refusing to cut production and also prevailing on OPEC not to do so. This has so far inflicted incalculable damage on the global economy. Saudi Arabia has taken a huge gamble by flooding the global oil market with crude oil with the intention of defending and enhancing its market share at the expense of its rivals such as Russia, Iran and Iraq and also slowing down if not killing US shale oil production altogether. This is a defunct policy which had been previously tried by Sheikh Ahmad Zaki Yamani in the early 1980s and found wanting. Saudi Arabia does not have very deep pockets to continue the oil war against others.Saudi Arabia's misguided oil strategy is starting to rebound on its economy, financial reserves and its currency. Other than the steep depletion of its financial reserves and the huge budget deficits, intense pressure is growing on the Saudi Riyal for possible devaluation or even floatation. Instead of waging oil wars, Saudi Arabia should deal with the real challenges facing it such as the growing and endemic youth unemployment which continues to endanger Saudi Arabia's national security and the need to create at least 3 million new jobs by 2020 in addition to diversification of the economy and elimination of the wasteful subsidies. All these issues need relatively high oil prices to finance them.

Book Oil and Security Policies

Download or read book Oil and Security Policies written by Islam Yasin Qasem and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With one quarter of proven oil reserves and the largest oil production in the world, Saudi Arabia has been at the center of world politics. Its vast oil resources have been utilized in various ways to maximize internal and external security. While oil revenue allowed the Saudi state to buy off legitimacy at home and abroad, the Saudi state exploited oil supply to either forge alliances with or pressure consuming and producing countries. By providing an insightful account of how oil resources shaped Saudi security policies since the mid-twentieth century, Islam Y. Qasem offers a timely contribution to the study of oil politics and the interrelationship between economic interdependence and security.

Book Covering Oil

Download or read book Covering Oil written by Svetlana Tsalik and published by Lifting the Resource Curse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revenue Watch program and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue promote transparency and civic participation in natural resource policymaking. Journalists know how hard it is to report on government management of oil, gas, and other natural resource revenues. Governments and industry are seldom forthcoming. And reporters themselves usually lack the background in economics, engineering, geology, and corporate finance helpful to understanding the energy industry and the effects of resource wealth. This book attempts to redress the balance with practical information in easy to understand language. Chapters include Understanding the Resource Curse, A Primer on Oil, Oil Companies and the International Oil Market, the ABCs of Petroleum Contracts, and the Environmental, Social, and Human Rights Impacts of Oil Development. Tip sheets inform reporters about stories to pursue and questions to ask.

Book Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Saudi Arabia written by Nino P. Tollitz and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia enjoys special importance in much of the international community because of its unique association with the Islamic religion and its oil wealth. Since the establishment of the modern Saudi kingdom in 1932, it has benefitted from a stable political system and a prosperous economy dominated by the oil sector. With one-fourth of the world's proven oil reserves and some of the lowest production costs, Saudi Arabia is likely to remain the world's largest net oil exporter for the foreseeable future. During January-October 2004, Saudi Arabia supplied the United States with 1.5 million barrels per day of crude oil, or 15%, of U.S. crude oil imports during that period. The September 11, 2001 attacks fueled criticisms within the United States of alleged Saudi involvement in terrorism or of Saudi laxity in acting against terrorist groups.

Book The Netherlands and the Oil Crisis

Download or read book The Netherlands and the Oil Crisis written by Duco Hellema and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This incisive study examines the role of the Netherlands in the October War and the oil crisis of 1973. The authors contend that the actions of the Dutch government were hypocritical: the Dutch government faced a domestic crisis when an oil embargo was levied against them by Arab countries for selling arms to Israel; yet after oil began arriving again two months later, the Dutch rejected a proposal for a stricter interventionist energy policy within the European Union. A probing and thought-provoking study, The Netherlands and the Oil Crisis draws on previously unavailable archival sources to shed new light on a pivotal moment in contemporary Dutch history.

Book Reimagining U S Strategy in the Middle East

Download or read book Reimagining U S Strategy in the Middle East written by Dalia Dassa Kaye and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "U.S. policy toward the Middle East has relied heavily on military instruments of power and has focused on regional threats--particularly the Iranian threat--with the goal of keeping partners on "our side." These long-standing policies have largely fallen short of meeting core U.S. interests and adapting to new regional realities and strategic imperatives. RAND researchers offer an alternative framework, suggesting that the U.S. strategic priority must center on reducing regional conflict and the drivers of conflict. This revised strategic approach puts a greater focus on addressing conflict and socioeconomic challenges that are creating unsustainable pressures on the region's states and immense suffering among its people. Researchers analyze how the tools of U.S. policy--political, security, economic, diplomatic, and informational instruments--would need to adjust to more effectively address such challenges in ways that are mindful of limited resources at home. Researchers also examine how the United States deals with both partners and adversaries in and outside the region and consider how to better leverage policies to the benefit of U.S. interests and the region. The researchers recommend specific actions organized into the following three pillars: (1) shifting resources from the current heavy reliance on military tools to a more balanced approach that prioritizes economic investments, governance, diplomacy, and programs focused on people; (2) favoring a long-term time horizon to reduce regional conflict and support growth and development, even at the cost of short-term risks; and (3) working multilaterally with global and regional partners to address key challenges." -- from the publisher.
