Growth in 2020 reached 2.9 percent, among the highest in the world. However, labor market conditions remain weak. Corporate balance sheets have worsened, potentially hampering private investment and job prospects. Banks entered the crisis in a stronger position than in previous years, but weaknesses remain. Vietnam’s economy remains heavily reliant on external trade and is vulnerable to trade tensions.

Book Switzerland 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report Staff Statement and Statement by the Executive Director for Switzerland

Download or read book Switzerland 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report Staff Statement and Statement by the Executive Director for Switzerland written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switzerland has navigated the COVID-19 pandemic well. The pandemic has had major social and economic impacts, but an early, strong, and sustained health and economic policy response helped contain the contraction of activity. Coordinated efforts targeting households and firms stemmed a loss of purchasing power and a rise of unemployment and bankruptcies. Recovery has commenced, but uncertainty and risks remain high, dominated by pandemic dynamics. The rebound should deepen, as vaccination proceeds, containment is eased, and domestic and global demand picks up. Fiscal support has been rightly extended in 2021, and monetary policy remains accommodative. Policies should remain supportive until there are clear signs of sustained recovery; the authorities should expand support if needed. Redirection to fostering green, digital transformation with attention to low-income earners will be needed, including to ensure that prolonged emergency support does not hinder structural changes in the economy.

Book Global Waves of Debt

Download or read book Global Waves of Debt written by M. Ayhan Kose and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy has experienced four waves of rapid debt accumulation over the past 50 years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging market and developing economies. During the current wave, which started in 2010, the increase in debt in these economies has already been larger, faster, and broader-based than in the previous three waves. Current low interest rates mitigate some of the risks associated with high debt. However, emerging market and developing economies are also confronted by weak growth prospects, mounting vulnerabilities, and elevated global risks. A menu of policy options is available to reduce the likelihood that the current debt wave will end in crisis and, if crises do take place, will alleviate their impact.

Book Republic of Kazakhstan 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report Staff Statement and Statement by the Executive Director for Kazakhstan

Download or read book Republic of Kazakhstan 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report Staff Statement and Statement by the Executive Director for Kazakhstan written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activity returned to its pre-COVID level in 2021. Inflation remains well above the NBK’s 4–6 percent target band, and spillovers from sanctions on Russia will exacerbate price pressures and weaken economic growth in 2022. Kazakhstan benefits from strong fiscal and external buffers but risks to the outlook are elevated due to the uncertain impact on Kazakhstan of the sanctions on Russia and heightened domestic tensions since the January social unrest episode. In the medium term, non-oil growth under the baseline is expected to converge to about 4 percent. Sustainable growth will require greater economic diversification. Climate-related challenges are acute for Kazakhstan given its outsized hydrocarbon sector, high per-capita greenhouse gas emissions, and low domestic energy prices.

Book Arab Republic of Egypt 2021 Article IV Consultation Second Review Under the Stand By Arrangement Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for the Arab Republic of Egypt

Download or read book Arab Republic of Egypt 2021 Article IV Consultation Second Review Under the Stand By Arrangement Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for the Arab Republic of Egypt written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year has been well-managed by the authorities. Timely and prudent fiscal and monetary easing shielded the economy from the full brunt of the crisis, while alleviating the health and social impact of the shock. Sound economic policies helped deliver macroeconomic stabilization, safeguard debt sustainability, and preserve investor confidence. While growth is expected to rebound in FY2021/22, the outlook is still clouded by uncertainty related to the pandemic and the pace of vaccinations. High public debt and large gross financing needs leave Egypt vulnerable to external shocks or changes in financial market conditions for EMs. Near-term fiscal and monetary policies should thus continue to support the recovery without accumulating undue imbalances.

Download or read book Saudi Arabia written by International Monetary Fund. Middle East and Central Asia Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2019 Article IV Consultation with Saudi Arabia discusses that reforms are starting to yield positive results. Oil prices and production have been volatile, and uncertainties in the global oil market continue. Promoting non-oil growth and creating jobs for Saudi nationals remain key challenges. Non-oil growth is expected to strengthen further this year and over the medium term. Risks to the growth outlook are broadly balanced. The fiscal deficit declined in 2018; however, higher government spending has increased medium-term fiscal vulnerabilities to a decline in oil prices. Fiscal consolidation is needed to reduce these vulnerabilities. The fiscal framework should be further strengthened to help reduce the procyclicality of government spending. Reforms to improve the business environment are proceeding but need to be complemented by efforts to increase the cost competitiveness of Saudi labor. Government support to develop sectors of the economy should crowd in the private sector and be timebound and linked to performance.

Book Germany 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Germany

Download or read book Germany 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Germany written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany’s economy contracted by just under 5 percent in 2020, outperforming most European peers. But renewed waves of infections and associated lockdowns caused economic activity to plunge again in the first quarter of this year. While the pace of mass vaccination has picked up and the economy has started to reopen, the recovery path is beset with risks, particularly with respect to the progress of the pandemic and supply shortages in major industries. The authorities have maintained appropriately accommodative fiscal and financial policies, and most measures supporting households and firms have been extended through 2021.

This book was released on 2021-10-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recovery is underway, but the economic fallout from the global pandemic could be with us for years to come. Book South Africa 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for South Africa

Download or read book South Africa 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for South Africa written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa’s subpar economic performance over the last decade has weakened its macroeconomic fundamentals and social indicators. In response to formidable COVID-19-related challenges, government expenditure surged, and, amid declining revenue, the budget deficit widened significantly. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and the Prudential Authority (PA) preserved adequate liquidity conditions and financial-sector stability. The cyclical recovery from the deep contraction has been faster than expected but its strength is unlikely to be sustained. Benign global market conditions have supported asset performance, although term premia are elevated due to fiscal risks. Bank soundness indicators remain solid, but a deepening bank-sovereign nexus raises some concerns.

Book Norway 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Staff Statement

Download or read book Norway 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Staff Statement written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norway’s key challenge is to get the right balance of support for recovery and adjustment until the crisis is firmly in its past. The authorities intend to continue exceptional policy support into 2021, adjusted to reflect the rebound in economic activity and pace of vaccinations in the second half of the year, and with better targeting to affected sectors. This will support the expected closing of the output gap by 2023 and help mitigate scarring, while also facilitating reallocation of capital and labor.

Book Federated States of Micronesia 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for the Federated States of Micronesia

Download or read book Federated States of Micronesia 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for the Federated States of Micronesia written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures have put severe strains on the economy. The economic policy response has been strong and generally appropriate, helping counter the negative effects of the pandemic. Nevertheless, as the international borders remain shut, the economic contraction is likely to deepen in FY2021. A slow recovery is expected for FY2022 driven by a gradual border reopening. The FSM is facing significant medium-term uncertainty, owing to the possible expiration of grants and other assistance provided under the Compact Agreement with the United States. The FSM is also highly vulnerable to climate change-induced natural disasters.
