Book The Saga of San Francisco s Wild Western Addition and Me

Download or read book The Saga of San Francisco s Wild Western Addition and Me written by Robert Leland Speer and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recommended by the preeminent Californian Historian Kevin Starr, this book explores in depth the most interesting and controversial area of San Francisco--the Western Addition. Although now much reduced into a smaller district from the original nineteenth-century boundaries which previously included the districts of the Marina, Pacific Heights, Presidio Heights, Cow Hollow, Anza Vista, Hayes Valley, Lower Pacific Heights, Alamo Square, and the North Panhandle; the district continues in the twentieth-first century to be a fascinating element of changing urban development, as also examined on other cities in the U.S.; such as Kansas City, Oakland, etc. As a personal autobiography, the book adds extensive information from public memberships, social intercourse, neighborhood meetings, real estate business transactions, commission-appointed memberships, and political involvements. The San Francisco Redevelopment and Housing Agencies are revealed in vivid detail. This western development of the city was a vortex of immigrants from the Eastern U.S., Western Europe, Asia, Africa, etc. Many of these were members of a great variety of religious backgrounds such as Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. This "melting pot" is analyzed in great detail. Also the importance of the political reforms by the LGBT community is explored. The utopia of San Francisco has rapidly changed with the biotech and high-tech immigrants, who work in Silicon Valley but prefer to live in the Western Addition. This book promises an amazing and wild journey for the reader.

Book San Francisco s West Portal Neighborhoods

Download or read book San Francisco s West Portal Neighborhoods written by Richard Brandi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When youre in West Portal and the adjacent Forest Hill and St. Francis Wood, its hard to believe youre still in San Francisco. These quiet and picturesque neighborhoods are decidedly non-urban, yet they are connected by a streetcar tunnel that leads under Twin Peaks to the bustling downtown area, two miles through the citys mountainous core. In fact, West Portal is named for the western end of this tunnel, which opened in 1917 to bring residents from the city center to what were new garden suburbs. Originally West Portal was sandy and scruffy, while Forest Hill and St. Francis Wood were heavily forested. The neighborhoods grew rapidly in the 1920s, and today West Portal is a popular shopping and entertainment district, while St. Francis Wood and Forest Hill boast some of the citys finest architecture and landscaping.

Book Engaging San Francisco s Western Addition in a Community Needs Assessment A Field Work Report

Download or read book Engaging San Francisco s Western Addition in a Community Needs Assessment A Field Work Report written by Bridget Walsh-Dahlberg and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco's Western Addition is a neighborhood steeped in a history of discriminative policies and actions. Today, while the Western is a vibrant community, it continues to feel the effects of the historic discriminatory practices. This is evident in the disparities seen across many indicators, including: educational success and attainment; health; employment; and housing opportunities. Engage San Francisco, an initiative born from the University of San Francisco's Leo T. McCarthy for Public Service and Common Good seeks to help improve the lives and success of children, youth and families in the Western Addition through community identified needs. Through campus-community relationships between the Western Addition and the University of San Francisco, Engage San Francisco hopes to engage students through service-learning opportunities that emphasize education, health, housing, and employment in the Western Addition. Currently, as a means of improving the health and healthcare availability in the Western Addition, Engage San Francisco and the USF School of Nursing and Health Professions is in the process of developing a integrated care clinic serving the health needs of the Western Addition. This paper will detail the 300-hour fieldwork experience working with both agencies to conduct a health needs assessment that will lay the foundation of the services that will be provided at the integrated care clinic.
