The headquarters or garrisons were located at San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco, respectively. These military posts provided the guards for the Missions situated within the limits of their jurisdiction. The military district of San Diego embraced the Missions of San Diego, San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and San Gabriel, of which the City of Los Angeles in spiritual mat ters was a dependency. Although independent of one an other, a sort of union or connection existed among the Missions of the district. This suggested the geographical rather than the chronological order in relating the local his tory of the twenty-one Missions. Book Old Missions and Mission Indians of California

Download or read book Old Missions and Mission Indians of California written by George Wharton James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Missions and Mission Indians of California: Fully Illustrated In 1767, King Charles III. Of Spain ordered an expedition to sail, to take possession of the Cali fornias, convert the Indians found there, and protect the country from the encroachments of Russians from the north, which the latter then owned. Jose de G'alvez, the visitador general of New Spain, - a man of great foresight and ability, - to whom the Americans of the South California of to day owe much, - was the man to whom this important undertaking was intrusted. The only knowledge of where he was to go was obtained from the very indefinite 'survey of Vizcaino, yet so closely was this first definite scheme of colonization and conversion planned that there were orders to plant a mission and garr1son first at San Diego, then at Monterey, and then one, half way between, to be called Buena Ventura. Book A Visit to the Mission Indians of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Visit to the Mission Indians of California Classic Reprint written by Charles C. Painter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to the Mission Indians of California In my report of a previous visit, published by the Indian Rights Association, it was stated that At my earnest request the Government has appointed special counsel to take up and defend the rights of these Indians, but appointed him to serve without compensation. It seems evident, therefore, that this effort must be sustained and pushed by our Association. It is known to many that the Indian Rights Association became responsible for the fees of Mr. Ward, the special counsel appointed by the attorney-general, neither the Department of Justice nor the Interior Department having any funds to use for such purposes. The case of Byrnes m. The San Jacinto Indians came to trial last summer, and was decided in favor of the plaintiff, and, failing to induce the Government to stand sponsor for the case, and assume responsibility for costs and indemnity to plaintiff pending an appeal to the Supreme Court, the Secretary of the Indian Rights Association gave his personal check for which has been deposited with the clerk of the Court for San Diego County, California, to await the issue of this appeal. By the timely arrival of this check, the immediate ejectment of zoo Indians from the homes and lands on which, by con cession of plaintiff, they have lived continuously since 1815, was delayed at least until the Supreme Court of the State shall con firm the decree of the lower court. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Penance of Magdalena: And Other Tales of the California Missions Slowly, very slowly, the greatest and most beautiful of the Missions of Alta California had risen among the swelling lomas of the valley of the San Juan. Brick by brick and stone by stone the simple Indian laborers, under the tutelage of the Fathers, had reared a structure which, in its way and place, might not unfitly be compared with those great cathedrals of Europe in which we see, as in a parable, how inward love and faith work out in material beauty. Huge timbers of pine and sycamore, hewn on Palomar, the Mountain of Doves, many miles away, had been hauled by oxen over trackless hill and valley, to form the joists and rafters that one sees to-day, after the lapse of more than a century, firm and serviceable, fastened with wooden spikes and stout rawhide lashings. In all these labors Teofilo had taken a principal part. As a child he had been christened with the name of Lucas, and had carried it through boyhood. But when about fourteen years of age, he had been transferred from the duties of a herder to learn the simple crafts taught in the workshops; and his industry and intelligence had so commended him to the overseers and Padre Josef that one day the latter, praising him for some task especially well performed, had said, half in jest, "Hijo mio, we must christen you over again. You are excelentisimo, as San Lucas said of San Teofilo in the superscription to his holy evangel; so I shall call you Teofilo, excelentisimo Teofilo, instead of Lucas; why not?"
