Book Saint Vincent Ferrer His World and Life

Download or read book Saint Vincent Ferrer His World and Life written by Philip Daileader and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were times of tumultuous change in medieval Europe; they witnessed the Black Death, the Great Papal Schism, heightened fears of the apocalypse, and the elimination of Spain's non-Christian population. Few figures were as widely and as intimately involved in late medieval Europe's struggles as Saint Vincent Ferrer. Perhaps the foremost preacher of his day, Ferrer spent the final two decades of his life traversing Europe, preparing the world for its imminent destruction. Saint Vincent Ferrer (d. 1419), His World and Life reassesses the controversial preacher's motives, methods, and impact, tracing Ferrer's journey from obscure logician to angel of the apocalypse, as he came to be known. At the same time, the book offers new insights into the depth and breadth of late medieval apocalyptic anticipation, and into the processes that ultimately led to the expulsions of Spain's Jews and Muslims.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are called “Hounds of the Lord,” and “Stoics on spiritual steroids.” For 800 years they have barked out Christ’s gospel message, saving countless souls and showing us how to think, do, and love for the glory of God. Inspired by the stories of their saints, we join the Dominicans in celebrating the Jubilee of their first 800 years. In these pages, we draw inspiration and spiritual strength from the lives, lessons, and legacies of their intellectual giants and enrapt mystics, the men and women who scrubbed floors, and those who cared for the dying. You’ll discover countless fascinating and pious stories, prophetic dreams and visions, apparitions of Christ and Our Lady, appearances of the devil in disguise, miraculous healings, episodes of bi-location, stigmata, incorruption after death, and more. From St. Thomas Aquinas to St. Martin de Porres, in story after story you’ll see how God favored these holy men and women in so many surprising and supernatural ways. Even 800 years later, these Hounds of the Lord are still out there today, roaming the world, seeking out souls to retrieve for Christ. Open this book, and you’ll be given a taste of that glorious and joyful spirit that animates the Dominican Order — a spirit they have so long and so willingly shared with the rest of the world. Let their example serve as inspiration, and let loose the hounds of the Lord within you.

Book Medieval Hagiography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Head
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-10-24
  • ISBN : 1317325141
  • Pages : 892 pages

Download or read book Medieval Hagiography written by Thomas Head and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents-through the medium of translated sources-a comprehensive guide to the development of hagiography and the cult of the saints in western Christendom during the middle ages. It provides an unparalleled resource for the study of the ideals of sanctity and the practice of religion in the medieval west. Intended for the classroom, for the medieval scholar who wishes to explore sources in unfamiliar languages, and for the general reader fascinated by the saints, this collection provides the reader a chance to explore in depth a full range of writings about the saints (the term hagiography is derived from Greek roots: hagios=holy and graphe=writing). The thirty-six chapters contain sources either in their entirety or in selections of substantial length. The great majority of the texts have never previously appeared in English translation. Those which have appeared in earlier translation, are here presented in versions based on significant new textual and historical scholarship which makes them significant improvements on the earlier versions. All the translations are accompanied by introductions, notes, and suggestions for further reading in order to help guide the reader. The first selections date to the fourth century, when the ideals of Christian sanctity were evolving to meet the demands of a world in which Christianity was an accepted religion and when the public veneration of relics was growing greatly in scope. The last selections date to the period immediately prior to the Reformation, a period in which the traditional concept of sanctity and acceptability of de cult of relics was being questioned. In addition to numerous works from the clerical languages of Latin and Greek, the selections include translations from Romance, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavic vernacular languages, s well as Hebrew texts concerning the martyrdom of Jews at the hands of Christians. Originating in lands from Iceland to Hungary and from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, they are taken from a full range of the many genres which constituted hagiography: lives of the saints, collections of miracle stories, accounts of the discovery or movement of relics, liturgical books, visions, canonization inquests, and even heresy trials.

Book Spoken Word and Social Practice

Download or read book Spoken Word and Social Practice written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoken Word and Social Practice: Orality in Europe (1400-1700) addresses historians and literary scholars. It aims to recapture oral culture in a variety of literary and non-literary sources, tracking the echo of women’s voices, on trial, or bantering and gossiping in literary works, and recapturing those of princes and magistrates, townsmen, villagers, mariners, bandits, and songsmiths. Almost all medieval and early modern writing was marked by the oral. Spoken words and turns of phrase are bedded in writings, and the mental habits of a speaking world shaped texts. Writing also shaped speech; the oral and the written zones had a porous, busy boundary. Cross-border traffic is central to this study, as is the power, range, utility, and suppleness of speech. Book Hagiography and the History of Latin Christendom 500 1500

Download or read book Hagiography and the History of Latin Christendom 500 1500 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hagiography and the History of Latin Christendom, 500–1500 shows the historical value of texts celebrating saints—both the most abundant medieval source material and among the most difficult to use. Hagiographical sources present many challenges: they are usually anonymous, often hard to date, full of topoi, and unstable. Moreover, they are generally not what we would consider factually accurate. The volume’s twenty-one contributions draw on a range of disciplines and employ a variety of innovative methods to address these challenges and reach new discoveries about the medieval world that extend well beyond the study of sanctity. They show the rich potential of hagiography to enhance our knowledge of that world, and some of the ways to unlock it. Contributors are Ellen Arnold, Helen Birkett, Edina Bozoky, Emma Campbell, Adrian Cornell du Houx, David Defries, Albrecht Diem, Cynthia Hahn, Samantha Kahn Herrick, J.K. Kitchen, Jamie Kreiner, Klaus Krönert, Mathew Kuefler, Katherine J. Book The Griffoni Polyptych Reborn in Bologna The Rediscovery of a Masterpiece Ediz A Colori

This book was released on 2020 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniting the long-dispersed 16 panels of a complex Renaissance masterwork Between the years 1471 and 1472, Italian Renaissance artists Francesco del Cossa (c. 1430- c. 1477) and Ercole de' Roberti (c. 1451-96) completed a multipanel piece commissioned by the patrons of the Basilica di San Petronio in Bologna. Composed of 16 poplar panels, the masterpiece honored Saint Vincent Ferrer, who had been canonized two decades earlier, rendered in exquisite colors and precious gold. In the early 18th century, however, the altarpiece was dismantled and each panel cut down into individual paintings which were then dispersed globally among collectors over the course of the next century. Today, the separate panels are owned by nine different museums, from Washington, DC, to its native Italy. This volume presents an investigation of the storied polyptych and its historical and philological dimensions, including a reconstruction of the plausible organization of the original altarpiece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The message in the story of my life is this; It isn't a question of where you come from but where you are going that really matters. The truth is that I was a rebellious run-away at fifteen. I dropped out of school and married the boy across the street. What does anyone know of marriage and mothering when they are still a child themselves? By the time I was twenty-one I had had four children, one died and one was born with facial deformities. There were times when I thought that no one cared. Little did I know that God had a plan and a purpose for me as He does for all of His children. I am a living testimony of "Amazing Grace". God used the tragedy, hopelessness, poverty, abuse, neglect and ignorance for good. Through Him, I found my way out of darkness and despair into a whole new world of light and love. With God all things are possible. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Sr. Mary Baruch told the novices in a conference on the Divine Office: "Praying the Psalms is like putting on a pair of old loafers that fit better and are more comfortable with each passing year." If you have met Sr. Mary Baruch from The Early Years (Volume I), you have followed her with each passing year, coming to know her family, her friends, and the sisters in her monastery - Our Lady Queen of Hope. They have lived through family crises and deaths, crises of faith and moments of saving grace, the devastation of 9/11, and the sexual and political scandals in the country, the Church, and the monastic world. Psalm 90 reads in part: "Our life is over like a sigh. Our span is seventy years or eighty for those who are strong . . . They pass swiftly and we are gone . . . " Well . . . Sr. Mary Baruch is in her seventies now and going strong amidst new crises in her family, among her few remaining friends, and certainly with the nuns in her cloistered monastery. With a shortage of vocations and the older generation passing away--what will become of everyone? Will Our Lady Queen of Hope even survive? Will her later years be like a pair of old loafers? Or have they become irrelevant and discarded? Will Sr. Mary Baruch continue into her eighties saying: "Such a blessing!" Or will it be rather, "Lord have mercy?"
