Download or read book Shells written by Fabio Moretzsohn and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoing with the sounds of the sea, an exquisite survey of the science and customs of conchs, clams, coquinas, cowries, and much more. Shells have captivated humans from the dawn of time: the earliest known artwork was made on a shell. As well as containers for food, shells have been used as tools, jewelry, decorations for dwellings, and to bring good luck or to ward off spirits. Many Indigenous peoples have used shells as currency, and in a few places, they still do. This beautifully illustrated book investigates the fascinating scientific and cultural history of shells. It examines everything from pearls—the only gems of animal origin—to how shells’ diverse colors and shapes are formed. And it reveals how shells have inspired artists throughout history, how shells have been used in architecture, and even how shells can be indicators of changing environmental conditions. Also including two essays by shell expert M. G. Harasewych, emeritus curator of gastropods in the Smithsonian’s Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Shells is an authoritative exploration of the deep human connection to these molluscan exoskeletons of sea, lake, land, and stream.

Book Materializing the Middle Passage

Download or read book Materializing the Middle Passage written by Webster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 2.7 million Africans made an enforced crossing of the Atlantic on British slave ships between c.1680 and 1807--a journey that has become known as the 'Middle Passage'. This book focuses on the slave ship itself. The slave ship is the largest artefact of the Transatlantic slave trade, but because so few examples of wrecked slaving vessels have been located at sea, it is rarely studied by archaeologists. Materializing the Middle Passage: A Historical Archaeology of British Slave Shipping,1680-1807 argues that there are other ways for archaeologists to materialize the slave ship. It employs a pioneering interdisciplinary methodology combining primary documentary sources, maritime and terrestrial archaeology, paintings, maritime and ethnographic museum collections, and many other sources to 'rebuild' British slaving vessels and to identify changes to them over time. The book then goes on to consider the reception of the slave ship and its trade goods in coastal West Africa, and details the range, and uses, of the many African resources (including ivory, gold, and live animals) entering Britain on returning slave ships. The third section of the book focuses on the Middle Passage experiences of both captives and crews and argues that greater attention needs to be paid to the coping mechanisms through which Africans survived, yet also challenged, their captive passage. Finally, Jane Webster asks why the African Middle Passage experience remains so elusive, even after decades of scholarship dedicated to uncovering it. She considers when, how, and why the crossing was remembered by 'saltwater' captives in the Caribbean and North America. The marriage of words and things attempted in this richly illustrated book is underpinned throughout by a theoretical perspective combining creolization and postcolonial theory, and by a central focus on the materiality of the slave ship and its regimes.

Book Shell

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Shell written by Ingrid Thomas and published by Thames and Hudson. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most complete, beautifully illustrated volume ever published on the fascinating world of the shell and its uses in design and decoration. Shells have captivated humans through the ages and been put to a wide range of uses—sharpened into tools, ground to make medicines, blown to make music. Shells were used as currency from the Americas through Africa to Asia, and worn as amulets to bring fertility, good fortune, or protection from the evil eye. Above all, the beauty of shells has fired the imaginations of artists and craftsmen, and their work forms the heart of this book. • Shells and mother-of-pearl have been carved to make buttons, jewelry, and delicate inlay work. • Shells are a universal element of human adornment, from the simplest string of beads to shell designs in gold and precious stones. • Mythological, symbolic, decorative, botanical, or fantastical: shells are a recurring theme in visual art. • Shells have featured in architectural ornament since ancient times, and in the twentieth century inspired the forms of landmark buildings. • Shells have inspired centuries of exquisite invention in silverware, ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture, and fashion. Shells were among the exotic treasures brought back from the voyages of discovery. By 1796 the mania for shells was such that a single shell raised six times the sum paid for a Vermeer painting at an estate auction in The Hague. Conchology and shell collecting remain hugely popular today, and the author explains how they can be pursued responsibly, without harming our precious marine environments. 500+ color photographs and illustrations.

Book MAN and SHELLS Molluscs in the History

Download or read book MAN and SHELLS Molluscs in the History written by Riccardo Cattaneo-Vietti and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Paleolithic age to the present, molluscs - which include squids, octopuses and a variety of shellfish - have featured in different facets of our history. Yet much of this detail is either unknown or underappreciated. From the shapes and patterns in their shells, to their culinary, medicinal and scientific value and from their depictions in literature and religions, mulluscs in general, and shellfish in particular, have fascinated mankind for millennia. Man and Shells is a treatise on molluscs in our natural history. Readers will traverse through the journey by demonstrating how these organisms have accompanied humans in arts and culture, in ancient religions, the myths that surround them, their role in commerce as in dyeing and as currency as well as in aquaculture and fishing, and much more. Man and Shells helps us to appreciate these creatures that continue to have an important yet little known place in the cultural evolution of man through the ages.
