Book Historical Dictionary of Russian Theatre

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Russian Theatre written by Laurence Senelick and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A latecomer continually hampered by government control and interference, the Russian theatre seems an unlikely source of innovation and creativity. Yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, it had given rise to a number of outstanding playwrights and actors, and by the start of the twentieth century, it was in the vanguard of progressive thinking in the realms of directing and design. Its influence throughout the world was pervasive: Nikolai Gogol', Anton Chekhov and Maksim Gor'kii remain staples of repertories in every language, the ideas of Konstantin Stanislavskii, Vsevolod Meierkhol'd and Mikhail Chekhov continue to inspire actors and directors, while designers still draw on the graphics of the World of Art group and the Constructivists. What distinguishes Russian theater from almost any other is the way in which these achievements evolved and survived in ongoing conflict or cooperation with the State. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Russian Theatre covers the history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on individual actors, directors, designers, entrepreneurs, plays, playhouses and institutions, Censorship, Children’s Theater, Émigré Theater, and Shakespeare in Russia. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Russian Theatre.

Book Reclaiming and Redefining American Exhibitions of Russian Art

Download or read book Reclaiming and Redefining American Exhibitions of Russian Art written by Roann Barris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of American exhibitions of Russian art in the twentieth century in the context of the Cold War. Because this history reflects changes in museological theory and the role of governments in facilitating or preventing intercultural cooperation, it uncovers a story that is far more complex than a chronological listing of exhibition names and art works. Roann Barris considers questions of stylistic appropriations and influences and the role of museum exhibitions in promoting international and artistic exchanges. Barris reveals that Soviet and American exchanges in the world of art were extensive and persistent despite political disagreements before, during, and after the Cold War. It also reveals that these early exhibitions communicated contradictory and historically invalid pictures of the Russian or Soviet avant-garde. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, and Russian studies.

Book Victory Over the Sun

Download or read book Victory Over the Sun written by Aleksei Eliseevich Kruchenykh and published by . This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Futurist opera was presented in snowy Petrograd in December 1913 to a riotous audience. The atonal music composed by Mikhail Matiushin accompanied the alogical libretto by Aleksei Kruchenykh, the action taking place in the 10th Land where "the windows of houses all face inside" and "all the paths go up to the earth," while the hands of a clock "both go backwards immediately before dinner." The cardboard costumes by Kazimir Malevich were surfaces lit by his roving colored spotlights, the characters bigger than life. This first English translation by Dr. Evgeny Steiner is accompanied by the Russian facsimile, followed by what is known of the musical score by Mikhail Matiushin, and a selection of Malevich's Cubist costume designs. Contemporary documents, from statements by the artists and photographs, to press reviews complete the contents of Vol. 1. Vol. 2 is a collection of scholarly essays on the Russian Futurist arts of language, music and performance, with Kruchenykh's own contribution to the "New Ways of the Word" first published in 1913. Together, this two volume collection of Victory Over the Sun presents Russian Futurism in all its guises. It is a tool for study, while it invites recreations of it today by theatre groups and those interested in the arts of language.

Download or read book Russian Theater written by Marc Slonim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian Theater (1963) is a comprehensive study of the main trends in Russian theatre in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning with its origins in pagan folklore and ritual, it goes on to consider the romantic drama which flourished in the first half of the nineteenth century, the realistic drama of Gogol, Turgenev and their contemporaries, and the beginning of the modernist movement. The foundation of the famous Moscow Art Theatre in 1898 by Stanislavsky and Danchenko led to a remarkable period of innovation in acting, production and stage design which still influences the theatre of the West. Their association of Chekhov and their production of his plays is fully described. The reader is also introduced to the work of such playwrights as Andreyev and Gorky, and to the experiments and ideas of directors like Meeyerhold, Tairov and Vakhtangov. A large part of the book is devoted to a systemic analysis of plays and trends under the Soviets and the rise and fall of the avant-garde theatres and the reasons for their replacement by conservative realism.
