Book State Control of Industry in Russia During the War Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Control of Industry in Russia During the War IN the autumn of 1914s, when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the program of its re searches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing program, which had been prepared as the result of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to Show the quality of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be fol lowed out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director Of the Division, in which it was proposed, by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an Economic and Social History Of the World War, it was felt, if undertaken by men of judicial temper and ade quate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific obliga tions to truth, furnish data for the forming of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally towards the aims of an institu tion dedicated to the cause of international peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Russia In the early part of 1916 the writer organized the Anglo-Russian Trade Commission for the purpose of investigating on the spot the possibilities of British manufacturers in Russia, the best methods to be employed for securing trade after the war, and as far as possible putting those represented into communication with reliable agents and responsible buyers. Sufficient support having been given to the enterprise, he proceeded to Russia in April, and spent six months in that country. He soon found that in order to fully appreciate the conditions and possibilities of business, it was necessary to cover the country very thoroughly, and not to confine his investigations to the larger cities, such as Petrograd, Moscow and Odessa. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industries of Russia, Vol. 1: Manufactures and Trade, With a General Industrial Map Ever since becoming established at this post of the Consular Service, I have had a constant stream of inquiry from all branches of trade in the United States with reference to its especial development in Russia, there being no publication in the Eng lish tongue covering these subjects, and but few of our people having a sufficient knowledge of the Russian language to glean from the native literature the information desired. In accepting, therefore, the invitation of the Imperial Min ister of Finance to supervise and edit the English translation of The Industries of. Russia, in its several volumes, I have under taken the serious labour involved in such a work, not only with very great pleasure but also as an important duty, thus aiding to give the American people an insight into what is to them, commercially speaking, an unknown country. Book Letters from Russia

Download or read book Letters from Russia written by Marquis de Custine and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marquis de Custine's unique perspective on a vast, fascinating country in the grip of oppressive tyranny In 1839, encouraged by his friend Balzac, Custine set out to explore Russia. His impressions turned into what is perhaps the greatest and most influential of all books about Russia under the Tsars. Rich in anecdotes as much about the court of Tsar Nicholas as the streets of St Petersburg, Custine is as brilliant writing about the Kremlin as he is about the great northern landscapes. An immediate bestseller on publication, Custine's book is also a central book for any discussion of 19th century history, as - like de Tocqueville's Democracy in America - it dramatizes far broader questions about the nature of government and society.

Book excerpt: Over the past century alone, Russia has lived through great achievements and deepest misery; mass heroism and mass crime; over-blown ambition and near-hopeless despair – always emerging with its sovereignty and its fiercely independent spirit intact. In this book, leading Russia scholar Dmitri Trenin accompanies readers on Russia’s rollercoaster journey from revolution to post-war devastation, perestroika to Putin’s stabilization of post-Communist Russia. Explaining the causes and the meaning of the numerous twists and turns in contemporary Russian history, he offers a vivid insider’s view of a country through one of its most trying and often tragic periods. Today, he cautions, Russia stands at a turning point – politically, economically and socially – its situation strikingly reminiscent of the Russian Empire in its final years. For the Russian Federation to avoid a similar demise, it must learn the lessons of its own history.
