Book International Banking and Rural Development

Download or read book International Banking and Rural Development written by Pade Badru and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998, this book reviews two of the World Bank's agricultural development projects in southeast Nigeria, and concludes that the objectives of these projects - which include reducing rural poverty and developing indigenous capacity for rural development - have not been fully realized. This book concludes that what these projects have achieved in the past, was the increasing integration of the peasant's political economy into the world's capitalist market with negative consequences. For example, the projects emphasis on export crop production, as opposed to food production, simply led to a diminishing capability among peasant farmers especially in the project areas, to produce food for themselves - while at the same time, reporting increased productivity in export-related production. The end result is widespread poverty amongst the poorest strata of peasant farmers participating in the program. In addition, the book looks at the Bank's structural adjustment programme, which in fact has the potential to reduce whatever benefits its agricultural programs might bring about for peasant producers.

Book An Assessment of the Role of Community Banks in Rural Development in Nigeria

Download or read book An Assessment of the Role of Community Banks in Rural Development in Nigeria written by Professor Muhammad Tanko and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A community bank in Nigeria is a self-sustaining financial institution owned and managed within a community to provide financial services to that community. The National Board for Community Banks (NBCB) processes applications for the establishment of community banks. The first community bank commenced operation in December 1990. Since then, NBCB has issued provisional licenses to over 1,366 community banks across the country. This paper therefore, assesses the role played by these community banks towards rural development in Nigeria. Capital adequacy, asset quality, earning strength, management competence, and liquidity sufficiency of the banks were basically the key instruments used in measuring the performance of the community banks used in the sample. It was found that although community banks faced a lot of problems, especially, in terms of over concentration of credits and sub standard asset base, they contribute immensely to rural development in Nigeria. Community banks have much development potential, and, while the Scheme 'has had mixed achievements', the growth of non-banking facilities, and increased collaboration with self-help groups or NGOs, should lead to greater success. It is the recommendation of the paper that, more is needed in the area of creating awareness of the existence of these banks. The Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) cover to pay Depositors a maximum refund of N30,000 incase of distress or bank failure as against N50,000 for conventional banks should be raised and the 500,000 matching grant of the NBCB is grossly inadequate considering the lots of achievements needed from these banks. Raising the insurance cover to N100,000 and the matching grant to 1 million could go along way in enhancing the development of community banks in Nigeria.

Book An Analysis of Farmers Access to Formal Credit in the Rural Areas of Nigeria

Download or read book An Analysis of Farmers Access to Formal Credit in the Rural Areas of Nigeria written by Saifullahi Sani Ibrahim and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly Research Paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: none, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (School of Arts and Social Sciences), course: Economics, language: English, comment: Saifullahi Sani Ibrahim: Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsin-ma, abstract: This study examines the factors that influence Farmers access to formal banking credit in the rural areas of Nigeria. The data used was collected from rural areas of Katsina State. The study used probit modelling approach to analyse the factors that influence farmers' accessibility to formal credit. The study found that the level of income, collateral, educational attainment and marital status have significant positive influence on farmers' access to formal credit, while age and sex have insignificant positive influence on the farmers' access to credit. On the other hand, interest rate and transaction cost have significant negative influence on the farmers' access to formal credit. Thus, the paper concluded that with the prevailing banking arrangement in Nigeria, rural farmers have little or no access to credit from conventional banks. Therefore, the study recommended the use of both group lending arrangement and character lending, so that farmers in the rural areas could be reached with formal credit.
