Book The Good Christian Ruler in the First Millennium

Download or read book The Good Christian Ruler in the First Millennium written by Philip Michael Forness and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late antique and early medieval Mediterranean was characterized by wide-ranging cultural and linguistic diversity. Yet, under the influence of Christianity, communities in the Mediterranean world were bound together by common concepts of good rulership, which were also shaped by Greco-Roman, Persian, Caucasian, and other traditions. This collection of essays examines ideas of good Christian rulership and the debates surrounding them in diverse cultures and linguistic communities. It grants special attention to communities on the periphery, such as the Caucasus and Nubia, and some essays examine non-Christian concepts of good rulership to offer a comparative perspective. As a whole, the studies in this volume reveal not only the entanglement and affinity of communities around the Mediterranean but also areas of conflict among Christians and between Christians and other cultural traditions. By gathering various specialized studies on the overarching question of good rulership, this volume highlights the possibilities of placing research on classical antiquity and early medieval Europe into conversation with the study of eastern Christianity.

Book The Jewel of Annual Astrology

Download or read book The Jewel of Annual Astrology written by Martin Gansten and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewel of Annual Astrology is an encyclopaedic treatise on Tājika or Sanskritized Perso-Arabic astrology, dealing particularly with the casting and interpretation of anniversary horoscopes. Authored in 1649 CE by Balabhadra Daivajña, court astrologer to Shāh Shujāʿ – governor of Bengal and second son of the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān – it casts light on the historical development of the Tājika school by extensive quotations from earlier works spanning five centuries. With this first-ever scholarly edition and translation of a Tājika text, Martin Gansten makes a significant contribution not only to the study of an important but little known knowledge tradition, but also to the intellectual historiography of Asia and the transmission of horoscopic astrology in the medieval and early modern periods.

Book excerpt: Alex Rutherford's internationally bestselling series continues with the story of the third great Moghul emperor, Akbar, leader of a triumphant dynasty that contained the seeds of its own destruction. Akbar, ruler of a sixth of the world's people, colossally rich and utterly ruthless, was a contemporary of Elizabeth I, but infinitely more powerful. He extended his empire over much of Asia, skillfully commanding tens of thousands of men, elephants, and innovative technology. And despite the unimaginable bloodshed that resulted from it, his rule was based on universal religious tolerance. However, Akbar's home life was more complicated. He defied family, nobles, and mullahs to marry a beautiful Rajput princess, whose people he had conquered; but she hated Akbar and turned Salim, his eldest son, against him. What's more, as any Moghul prince could inherit his father's crown and become emperor, his sons were brought up to be intensely competitive and suspicious of each other: to see each other as rivals for the greatest prize of all. And, as Salim grew to manhood, the relationship between father and son became tainted by rebellion and competition to be the greatest Moghul of them all.

Book The Land of Israel in the Book of Ezekiel

Download or read book The Land of Israel in the Book of Ezekiel written by Wojciech Pikor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pikor anaylzes the land of Israel in the book of Ezekiel showing how its preoccupation with the Babylonian exile and the loss of the Promised Land that this entails is directly linked to the danger this poses to Israel's covenant with God. Pikor examines the motif of land in its literary and historical contexts and in relation to the oracles of salvation in chapters 34-39 as well as the vision of the new Israel and the return of Yahweh's Glory to the temple. Pikor begins by examining the motif of land in its literary and historical contexts. The main body of the book then addresses specific sections of Ezekiel. Chapter two analyzes the oracles of punishment addressed to Israel, in which the land undergoes a process of anthropomorphization. Chapter three situates the punishment experienced by Ezekiel and his listeners in a broader historical context suggested by the prophet in Ezekiel 20. Chapter four analyses the oracles of salvation in Ezekiel 34–39, in which the restoration of the land of Israel remains intertwined with the promise of the new covenant. Finally, chapter five addresses the closing vision of the new Israel (Ezekiel 40–48), which is characterized by the territorial dimension of the future restoration. This feature is shown via analysis of the rhetoric of the land, the crucial element of which is the return of Yahweh's Glory to the temple. God's presence adds sacral value to the land in which his covenant with his people is to be realized. The covenant will be finalized through Israel's repopulation of the renewed land.

Book A Handbook on Isaiah

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jan de Waard
  • Publisher : Eisenbrauns
  • Release : 1997-01-01
  • ISBN : 157506023X
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book A Handbook on Isaiah written by Jan de Waard and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the first of a projected series on the Hebrew Bible, de Waard aims to give translators better insight into the viewpoint of the textual critic to help them find a good base for translation. Though of primary interest for translators, students and scholars will also be pleased to find that de Waard summarizes the arguments and ratings of the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project. Because the final report of the HOTTP was published in French and was the work of textual critics rather than translation specialists, its valuable contribution was found to have practical limitations. DeWaard's work is also valuable because it examines three major Jewish versions in addition to the Christian versions selected by the Project for study. Future volumes are planned to cover other portions of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.

Book Ezekiel

    Book Details:
  • Author : John W. Olley
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9004177132
  • Pages : 601 pages

Download or read book Ezekiel written by John W. Olley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first major commentary to focus on the text of LXX Ezekiel in any modern language. Rather than seeing LXX mainly as a text-critical resource with variants to be explained, this commentary, as part of the Septuagint Commentary Series, examines a specific manuscript in its own right as a document used by Greek readers unfamiliar with Hebrew. Included are transcription and English translation of Codex Vaticanus, the oldest extant manuscript of the whole book, and a detailed commentary that also compares the earlier P967 and the Masoretic Text where they differ. Another major new contribution is the utilisation of the sense-delimitation (paragraphs) of Codex Vaticanus itself, exploring how this influences reading of the text.
