Excerpt: ... introductory note Eucken's theory has failed all along the line. The question arises--Is there then no knowledge possible? No satisfactory solution of life and the universe? Eucken claims that Scholasticism will not meet the requirements of today: he considers that it will not measure up to the needs of the modern thought-world. We recall here what has been already said (Part I, Chap. iv)--that the fundamental laws which govern the working of the human mind are unchangeable. If, therefore, the psychology and metaphysics of Scholasticism did really offer a satisfactory interpretation of life and the universe in the Middle Ages--and Eucken practically grants that they did--it follows that that solution holds good today. In the two following chapters we shall unfold the Scholastic theory of knowledge and idea of truth: in Chapter iii we shall give the Scholastic teaching with regard to the Foundation of all truth and reality: in Chapter iv we shall direct attention again to Eucken's challenge and point out its answer. chapter I inquiry into the conditions of human knowledge general survey It may be well to point out that the question at issue is not the existence of a Spiritual Life, since Eucken is one with us in affirming this truth and in asserting that an Absolute Spiritual Life forms "the ultimate basis of all reality: " our inquiry here is concerned with the necessary conditions of that existence. It must be clearly borne in mind that Eucken has posited an Absolute Spiritual Life. The spiritual is that which is wholly distinct from and essentially opposed to matter,291 hence mater

Book excerpt: The name of Eucken has become a familiar one in philosophical and religious circles. Until recent years the reading of his books was confined to those possessing a knowledge of German, but of late several have been translated into the English language, and now the students of philosophy and religion are agog with accounts of a new philosopher who is at once a great ethical teacher and an optimistic prophet. There is no doubt that Eucken has a great message, and those who cannot find time to make a thorough study of his works should not fail to know something of the man and his teachings. The aim of this volume is to give a brief and clear account of his philosophical ideas, and to inspire the reader to study for himself Eucken's great works.

Book Rudolf Eucken His Life Work and Travels

Download or read book Rudolf Eucken His Life Work and Travels written by Rudolf Eucken and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rudolf Eucken, His Life, Work, and Travels Volumes of reminiscences have become common in our time. The frightful political and spiritual upheaval that we witness impels us to reflection and self-examination. I ask myself, therefore, whether the memories which I record in this book have something of interest to the general public, or whether it would be better to confine them to the smaller circle of my personal acquaintances. If I have ventured to choose the former alternative, it was for the following reason: - I have nothing to tell of great achievements, nor have I had any share in important political movements; but I was in a position to study the inner course of life and to exert some useful influence upon it. I have lived through the remarkable spiritual changes in the condition of Germany. In my youth the circumstances of life were far simpler and more peaceful than they are to-day. Life flowed in narrower channels. There was as yet none of that gigantic advance of industry and manufacture; there were no great cities with their clotted masses of humanity; life was not dominated by the workshops, or absorbed entirely in a feverish industrial activity.
