Book excerpt: In 1934 Frank Buchman's Oxford Group movement, a precursor to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), was invited to Norway. It made a deep impression upon Ronald Fangen, a young novelist and dramatist. Thereafter, as a Christian humanist, he attempted to persuade the Church to appreciate and learn from the Arts since such efforts would support the proclamation of its message. His writings beckon readers to sense with him the constant tension to communicate in the best way the Christian message in each generation; with this tension Fangen wrestled. The challenge continues today.

Book The Quest for a New Education

Download or read book The Quest for a New Education written by Merethe Roos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book thematizes the tension between education, politics, and religion in Norway after the Second World War, with an emphasis on the years between 1945 and 1970, and throws a new light on Norwegian school and education in the post-war period. The Norwegian educational landscape in the years after the Second World War must be seen against the development of the welfare state, and it appears as a part of the social democracy project typical for Norway at that time. The Labour Party, which held a prominent position in the educational landscape in the post-war decades, is normally regarded to have been an important driving force behind secularization of schools in Norway, not least because the total number of weekly lessons in religious education gradually was reduced. This book problematizes this thesis and enlightens how important politicians and policymakers within the Labour Party defended religious education. A central point is that this defense must be seen within the frames of a liberally oriented protestant theology. Thus, the study highlights the diversity of ideas in Norwegian politics in the post-war period and demonstrates how important impulses in Norwegian politics can be viewed against a wider international background.

Book Folklore Fights the Nazis

Download or read book Folklore Fights the Nazis written by Kathleen Stokker and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1997-02-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed with jokes, puns, and cartoons, Norwegians tried to keep their spirits high and foster the Resistance by poking fun at the occupying Germans during World War II. Despite a 1942 ordinance mandating death for the ridicule of Nazi soldiers, Norwegians attacked the occupying Nazis and their Norwegian collaborators by means of anecdotes, quips, insinuating personal ads, children’s stories, Christmas cards, mock postage stamps, and symbolic clothing. In relating this dramatic story, Kathleen Stokker draws upon her many interviews with survivors of the Occupation and upon the archives of the Norwegian Resistance Museum and the University of Oslo. Central to the book are four “joke notebooks” kept by women ranging in age from eleven to thirty, who found sufficient meaning in this humor to risk recording and preserving it. Stokker also cites details from wartime diaries of three other women from East, West, and North Norway. Placing the joking in historical, cultural, and psychological context, Stokker demonstrates how this seemingly frivolous humor in fact contributed to the development of a resistance mentality among an initially confused, paralyzed, and dispirited population, stunned by the German invasion of their neutral country. For this paperback edition, Stokker has added a new preface offering a comparative view of resistance through humor in neighboring Denmark.

Book Church Resistance to Nazism in Norway 1940 1945

Download or read book Church Resistance to Nazism in Norway 1940 1945 written by Arne Hassing and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church Resistance to Nazism in Norway, 1940-1945 examines the evolution of the Lutheran state Church of Norway in response to the German occupation. While German Protestant churches generally accepted Nazism and state incorporation, Norway’s churches rejected both Nazism and ideological alignment. Arne Hassing moves through the history of the Church of Norway’s relationship to the Nazi state, from its initial confused complicities to its open resistance and separation. He writes engagingly of the people at the center of this struggle and reflects on how the resistance affected the postwar church and state.

Book Troubling Legacies

Download or read book Troubling Legacies written by Peter Sjølyst-Jackson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernist troublemaker in the 1890s, Nobel Prize winner in 1920, and indefensible Nazi sympathiser in the 1930s and 40s, Knut Hamsun continues to provoke condemnation, apologia and critical confusion. Informed by the works of Jacques Derrida and Sigmund Freud, Troubling Legacies analyses the heterogeneous and conflicted legacies of the enigmatic European writer, Hamsun. Moving through different phases of his life, this study emphasises the dislocated nature of Hamsun's works and the diverse and conflicting responses his fiction elicited from such figures as Franz Kafka, Katherine Mansfield, Walter Benjamin and Martin Heidegger. Close readings of the major novels Hunger, Mysteries, Pan and Growth of the Soil are presented alongside lesser known writings, including his early polemic on America, his turn-of-the-century travelogue through Russia, his fascist polemics of the 1930s and 40s, and his controversial post-war testimony, On Overgrown Paths. Troubling Legacies links past debates with contemporary literary theory and deconstruction in a way that contributes to critical thinking about political responsibility.
