Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaius Marius (157-86B) was one of the most innovative and influential commanders of antiquity. With Marius in command of its legions, Rome prevailed on the battlefields of North Africa and defeated a two-pronged invasion of the Italian peninsula by 300,000 migrating Germanic tribesmen. The reason for this success was a series of five ground-breaking reforms through which Marius dramatically altered the demographics, recruitment, training and operation of the Roman army. In effect, Marius’ reforms changed the Roman military from a service of short-term militia into a professional standing army. This allowed Rome to use the military as an effective tool for military expansion and internal security and laid the foundations for the role of the Roman army for centuries to come. Many of these reforms, however, came at a cost to the stability of the state. This book charts the military implications of Marius’ reforms: what they were, why they were made, how they were made, and how they altered the functionality of the Roman military.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last century of the Roman Republic saw the consensus of the ruling elite shattered by a series of high-profile politicians who proposed political or social reform programs, many of which culminated in acts of bloodshed on the streets of Rome itself. This began in 133 BC with the military recruitment reforms of Tiberius Gracchus, which saw him and his supporters lynched by a mob of angry Senators. He was followed by a series of radical politicians, each with their own agenda that challenged the status quo of the Senatorial elite. Each met a violent response from elements of the ruling order, leading to murder and even battles on the streets of Rome. These bloody political clashes paralyzed the Roman state, eventually leading to its collapse. Covering the period 133 - 70 BC, this volume analyzes each of the key reformers, what they were trying to achieve and how they met their end, narrating the long decline of the Roman Republic into anarchy and civil war.

Book Rome and Reform Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rome and Reform Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by T. L. Kington Oliphant and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome and Reform, Vol. 2 of 2 Poland naturally comes after Ireland; the two are much alike in their warlike spirit, in their love of disunion, in their devotion to Rome, and in their gloomy history since the Counter Reformation set in. Here we have to go back to the year 1300, and to draw a line, roughly speaking, between Grodno and Zamosc, afterwards lengthening it in a South-West direction on to the Hungarian border. To the West of this line dwelt the Poles, who had been centuries earlier converted from heathenism by Rome. To the East of this line dwelt the White and Red Russians, who, in common with their countrymen at Moscow, were the spiritual offspring of the Greek patriarch at Constantinople, and claimed the name of Orthodox. To the North of Grodno dwelt the Lithuanians, a race of valiant Pagans, the most interesting of all Europeans in the eyes of a philologer. The deeds of these three nations make up the future history of Poland. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As a general rule I confine myself to Europe, though the temptation is strong to contrast the English with the Spanish colonies in America. Book The Gracchan Reforms and Why Rome Wasn t Ready Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus

Download or read book The Gracchan Reforms and Why Rome Wasn t Ready Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus written by Seth Carter and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject World History - Antiquity, Indiana University (College of Arts and Sciences), course: SP16-BL-HIST-J300-8627 "The Fall of the Roman Republic", language: English, abstract: This brief research paper is intended as a rudimentary historical analysis of the immediate political, societal, and economic effects from 133 to 121 BC of the political and policy-oriented measures undertaken by tribunes Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus within the Roman Republic. The argument forwarded by the paper asserts that, had the Gracchi been more receptive to political compromise and less audacious in their policy pursuits, that more gradual reforms of Roman agrarian policy would have likely been more attainable. Academic resources utilized for the paper's formation include "Shotter, D. The Fall of the Roman Republic. London: Routledge, 1996," and, "Mackay, Christopher S. The Breakdown of the Roman Republic: From Oligarchy to Empire. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2009," as well as the primary accounts of Greek chronicler Plutarch.
