Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook details the procedures for the safe and efficient operation of roll-on roll-off type cargo ships, from loading and unloading at dockside to navigating the open seas. Thirteen chapters cover all aspects of Ro-Ro shipping such as ship development, ports and terminals, hold ventilation, cargo-handling equipment, transport regulations, ship handling, fire safety, maintenance, and more. Over 175 pictures, charts, and illustrations further explain the crucial methods to maintaining safe operations. As Ro-Ro shipping increases due to global economics, the importance of this guide, the first of its kind, is clear. Written by a Ro-Ro ship commander with more than 12 years' experience in the shipping industry, this book will prove indispensable to ship officers, operators, managers, superintendents, and surveyors as well as anyone involved in the operation of Ro-Ro ships.

Download or read book Stemming the Tide written by Committee on Ships'Ballast Operations and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European zebra mussel in the Great Lakes, a toxic Japanese dinoflagellate transferred to Australia--such biologically and economically harmful stowaways have made it imperative to achieve better management of ballast water in ocean-going vessels. Stemming the Tide examines the introduction of nonindigenous species through ballast water discharge. Ballast is any solid or liquid that is taken aboard ship to achieve more controlled and safer operation. This expert volume Assesses current national and international approaches to the problem and makes recommendations for U.S. government agencies, the U.S. maritime industry, and the member states of the International Maritime Organization. Appraises technologies for controlling the transfer of organisms--biocides, filtration, heat treatment, and others --with a view toward developing the most promising methods for shipboard demonstration. Evaluates methods for monitoring the effectiveness of ballast water management in removing unwanted organisms. The book addresses the constraints inherent in ballast water management, notably shipboard ballast treatment and monitoring. Also, the committee outlines efforts to set an acceptable level of risk for species introduction using the techniques of risk analysis. Stemming the Tide will be important to all stakeholders in the issue of unwanted species introduction through ballast discharge: policymakers, port authorities, shippers, ship operators, suppliers to the maritime industry, marine biologists, marine engineers, and environmentalists.
Download or read book Sea Basing written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-08-14 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of land bases from which to launch and maintain military, diplomatic, and humanitarian relief operations is becoming increasingly uncertain because of physical or political constraints. The ability to operate from a sea base, therefore, is likely to become more and more important. The Defense Science Board recently concluded that Sea Basing will be a critical future joint military capability and that DOD should proceed to develop such capability. Following the DSB report, the Navy requested that the National Research Council (NRC) convene a workshop to assess the science and technology base, both inside and outside the Navy, for developing Sea Basing and to identify R&D for supporting future concepts. This report of the workshop includes an examination of Sea Basing operational concepts; ship and aircraft technology available to make Sea Basing work; and issues involved in creating the sea base as a joint system of systems.

Book excerpt: Transport and Distribution: Made Simple introduces the whole field of transport and physical distribution practiced in the 1970s. This book discusses the transport in the framework of production, components of a transport system, characteristics of different ways, and effect of traffic characteristics on terminals. The principles in the design of units of carriage, motive power at sea, and outline of the distribution process are also elaborated. This compilation likewise covers the documents for road haulage operations, development of the common transport policy, and control of rail transport. This text provides a wide range of examination syllabuses at an intermediate and higher level, covering the introductory syllabuses of the Chartered Institute of Transport and the Institute of Traffic Administration. This publication is ideal for H.N.C., H.N.D., and CNAA degree students majoring in transport option, as well as sociology students considering the impact of transport on the environment.

Download or read book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology written by Tiago A. Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough understanding of Short Sea Shipping (SSS) and its role in transport chains, presenting a revision of EU policies for SSS. Infrastructure and equipment required for the success of SSS are discussed, including critical features of modern roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships and terminals. Models are proposed for the evaluation of transportation demand in SSS, including the potential effects of external costs, and its results are used within the scope of methods for Ro-Ro ship and fleet sizing. A discussion of methods used to calculate such costs is provided, and a comparison of aggregated demand with and without internalisation of external costs is carried out, pointing towards solutions for ‘greening’ freight transportation. Applications of multi-criteria decision-making and simulation techniques to supply chains based on SSS are presented. The role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the promotion of SSS is also discussed. A number of case studies illustrate the different research methods and techniques. This book is a useful resource for students and researchers studying transportation, as well as policymakers and practitioners involved in this field and anyone with an interest in the promotion of environmentally sound transport solutions.
