Book The Nympho and Other Maniacs

Download or read book The Nympho and Other Maniacs written by Irving Wallace and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2019-04-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting and provocative book, Irving Wallace, one of America's most famous novelists, turns to nonfiction to tell the candid stories of more than thirty women of the last two centuries who defied the social standards of their times—sexually, politically, intellectually—rebelling against conventional behavior or ideas to go their own ways. These ladies, by intention or unwittingly, gave succeeding generations of women new freedoms—freedoms the very mention of which scandalized their contemporaries but which led, ultimately, to today's Women's Liberation Movement. With a gift of narrative rare in nonfiction, Irving Wallace describes the lives of Ninon de Lencios, who founded a School of Lovemaking in France; of Emma Hamilton, who became pregnant by England's greatest naval hero without her husband's noticing it; of Napoleon's sister, Pauline Bonaparte, whose intense sexual activity was the despair of her gynecologist; of Napoleon's mistress, Maria Walewska, who was asked to sacrifice her virtue to the Emperor to save Poland from his wrath... Perhaps nobody has ever done such justice to Lord Byron's reckless females—among them, the sensuous Teresa Guiccioli, who left her titled husband for Byron, the unhappy Caroline Lamb, who pursued Byron with such passion as to nearly drive him and her husband mad, and the unfortunate Claire Clairmont who gave Byron both a daughter and a hellish time. Certainly no one has ever written so entertainingly about such extraordinary tales as Victoria Woodhull, who ran for president of the United States in 1872 on a platform advocating free love, short skirts, vegetarianism, birth control, and world government (she also made a fortune as the first lady stockbroker, with the backing of her good friend Commodore Vanderbilt), or Lady Jane Eleenborough, who enjoyed thirty-six renowned lovers (three of them kings) and four husbands (the last an Arab sheik). The Nympho and Other Maniacs is a magnificent tour de force, a book that goes far beyond the amusing and incredible adventures of the uninhibited ladies themselves to make some wise and unexpected points about life, love, marriage, and women.

  • Author : Kathy Acker
  • Publisher : Grove Press
  • Release : 2018-02-27
  • ISBN : 0802146651
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Portrait of an Eye written by Kathy Acker and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of three early, self-published novels by the author of Empire of the Senseless. Beginning with The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula in 1973, Kathy Acker set out on a brilliant journey toward the boundaries of modern fiction that has made her one of the most celebrated novelists of her generation. From the start, Kathy Acker created a brash and sexy female voice as shocking as the worlds she invokes. In Childlike Life she steps into the biography of a Mississippi murderess who falls in love with a famous lawyer. In I Dreamt I Was A Nymphomaniac she takes a man capable of deceiving both sexes as her lover in a dreamy odyssey through the labyrinth of her desires. In The Adult Life Toulouse Lautrec is a woman starved for love and sex. All of Acker’s obsessions “the frenzy of sexual desire, the search for identity, the invention of a new literary language” are present here with savage purity and raw energy. Includes: The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula by the Black Tarantula I Dreamt I Was a Nymphomaniac: Imagining The Adult Life of Toulouse Lautrec by Henri Toulouse Lautrec Praise for Kathy Acker and Portrait of an Eye “A countercultural hero who hybridized elements of punk, literary postmodernism, feminism, and critical theory in her public identity and in her literary works.” —New Republic “For Kathy, the breakthrough was her first serial novel, The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula . . . she lifts lines from old biographies of murderesses. She adopts their picaresque style and switches out I for she. And suddenly, she’s off, and she can say anything.” —Chris Kraus, Paris Review

  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Shift Linguals written by Edward S. Robinson and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2011 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shift Linguals traces a history of the cut-up method, the experimental writing practice discovered by Brion Gysin and made famous by Beat author William S. Burroughs. From the groundbreaking works of Dada and Surrealism that paved the way for Burroughs’ breakthrough, through the countercultural explosion of the 1960s, Shift Linguals explores the evolution of the cut-ups within the theoretical frameworks of postmodernism and the avant-garde to arrive at the present and the digital age. Some 50 years on from the first ‘discovery’ of the cut-ups in 1959, it is only now that we are truly able to observe the method’s impact, not only on literature, but on music and culture in a broader sense. The result of over nine years of research, this study represents the first sustained and detailed analysis of the cut-ups as a narrative form. With explorations of the works of Burroughs, Gysin, Kathy Acker, and John Giorno, it also contains the first critical writing on the works of Claude Pélieu and Carl Weissner in English, as well as the first in-depth discussion of the writing of Stewart Home to date.
