Book A Call for Continuity

Download or read book A Call for Continuity written by Glen G. Scorgie and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Glen Scorgie's pioneer study of Orr as a theologian is a work long overdue. Scorgie's fascinating narrative makes plain the real distinction of Orr's mind. The present-day resurgence of the convictions that Orr championed suggests that in calling for continuity and combating theological novelty Orr had found the way of wisdom. . . . This book rehabilitates the doughty Glasgow professor as a thinker still to be reckoned with by those who care for Christian truth." -- J. I . Packer Regent College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, a new generation of liberal professors sought to prove Christianity's compatibility with contemporary currents in the study of philosophy, science, history, and democracy. These modernizing professors—Arthur Cushman McGiffert at Union Theological Seminary, George LaPiana at Harvard Divinity School, and Shirley Jackson Case at the University of Chicago Divinity School—hoped to equip their students with a revisionary version of early Christianity that was embedded in its social, historical, and intellectual settings. In The Fathers Refounded, Elizabeth A. Clark provides the first critical analysis of these figures' lives, scholarship, and lasting contributions to the study of Christianity. The Fathers Refounded continues the exploration of Christian intellectual revision begun by Clark in Founding the Fathers: Early Church History and Protestant Professors in Nineteenth-Century America. Drawing on rigorous archival research, Clark takes the reader through the professors' published writings, their institutions, and even their classrooms—where McGiffert tailored nineteenth-century German Protestant theology to his modernist philosophies; where LaPiana, the first Catholic professor at Harvard Divinity School, devised his modernism against the tight constraints of contemporary Catholic theology; and where Case promoted reading Christianity through social-scientific aims and methods. Each, in his own way, extricated his subfield from denominationally and theologically oriented approaches and aligned it with secular historical methodologies. In so doing, this generation of scholars fundamentally altered the directions of Catholic Modernism and Protestant Liberalism and offered the promise of reconciling Christianity and modern intellectual and social culture.

The perennially important question ÒWhat is the Christian gospel?Ó was, writes the author, Òthrust to the fore in that debate between theological conservatives and liberals which was at its height between 1890 and 1930, and of which echoes may be heard to this day. In this book I seek to trace the roots of this debate, to outline its course, and draw some lessons from it.Ó

Book Against False Apologetics

Download or read book Against False Apologetics written by Brent W. Sockness and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 1998 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Brent W. Sockness takes as his point of departure the judgment frequently encountered in twentieth-century theological literature that the last great German liberal Protestant systematic theologians prior to the rise of dialectical theology, Wilhelm Herrmann (1846-1922) and Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923), represent antithetical and paradigmatic alternatives in modern Christian theology. Going beyond the usual 'explanations' which invoke abstract allegiances (Kant vs. Schleiermacher, Marburg vs. Heidelberg neo-Kantianism, Ritschlianism vs. the History-of-Religions School), the author undertakes an exhaustive analysis of the nearly thirty years of mutual commentary, critique, and polemic which transpired between Herrmann and Troeltsch in both published and unpublished sources. Sockness charts the contours of their relations from their first encounters among the 'Friends of the Christian World,' through their increasingly hostile exchanges in the first decade of the century, to their personal reconciliation after the War."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
