Book excerpt: A colorful and revealing portrait of the rise of India’s new billionaire class in a radically unequal society India is the world’s largest democracy, with more than one billion people and an economy expanding faster than China’s. But the rewards of this growth have been far from evenly shared, and the country’s top 1% now own nearly 60% of its wealth. In megacities like Mumbai, where half the population live in slums, the extraordinary riches of India’s new dynasties echo the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers of America's Gilded Age, funneling profits from huge conglomerates into lifestyles of conspicuous consumption. James Crabtree’s The Billionaire Raj takes readers on a personal journey to meet these reclusive billionaires, fugitive tycoons, and shadowy political power brokers. From the sky terrace of the world’s most expensive home to impoverished villages and mass political rallies, Crabtree dramatizes the battle between crony capitalists and economic reformers, revealing a tense struggle between equality and privilege playing out against a combustible backdrop of aspiration, class, and caste. The Billionaire Raj is a vivid account of a divided society on the cusp of transformation—and a struggle that will shape not just India’s future, but the world’s.

Book India Is Broken

  • Author : Ashoka Mody
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2023-02-14
  • ISBN : 1503634221
  • Pages : 598 pages

Download or read book India Is Broken written by Ashoka Mody and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative new account of how India moved relentlessly from its hope-filled founding in 1947 to the dramatic economic and democratic breakdowns of today. When Indian leaders first took control of their government in 1947, they proclaimed the ideals of national unity and secular democracy. Through the first half century of nation-building, leaders could point to uneven but measurable progress on key goals, and after the mid-1980s, dire poverty declined for a few decades, inspiring declarations of victory. But today, a vast majority of Indians live in a state of underemployment and are one crisis away from despair. Public goods—health, education, cities, air and water, and the judiciary—are in woeful condition. And good jobs will remain scarce as long as that is the case. The lack of jobs will further undermine democracy, which will further undermine job creation. India is Broken provides the most persuasive account available of this economic catch-22. Challenging prevailing narratives, Mody contends that successive post-independence leaders, starting with its first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, failed to confront India's true economic problems, seeking easy solutions instead. As a popular frustration grew, and corruption in politics became pervasive, India's economic growth relied increasingly on unregulated finance and environmentally destructive construction. The rise of a violent Hindutva has buried all prior norms in civic life and public accountability. Combining statistical data with creative media, such as literature and cinema, to create strong, accessible, people-driven narratives, this book is a meditation on the interplay between democracy and economic progress, with lessons extending far beyond India. Mody proposes a path forward that is fraught with its own peril, but which nevertheless offers something resembling hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sensational rise and shocking downfall of India's twelve largest corporate defaulters. In June 2017, the Reserve Bank of India sent shockwaves through the nation as it disclosed a list of the country’s twelve biggest defaulters who were responsible for approximately a quarter of all bad loans in the Indian banking system. The alarming discovery of the ‘dirty dozen’ pulled back the curtain on the murky landscape of corporate irresponsibility and regulatory neglect, revealing the harsh reality of gross economic disparity, complacent governance and coordinated deceit. In The Dirty Dozen, business journalist N. Sundaresha Subramanian investigates the cause and impact of India’s chronic bad loan issue. Recording the economic misadventures of Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Jatin Mehta, among others, he lays bare the intricate maze of financial chaos, political plunder and malpractices that ail the country’s corporate landscape. In doing so, he makes an eye-opening diagnosis of the nation’s financial health since liberalization. In a country where millions struggle for basic sustenance, The Dirty Dozen offers a brave, hard-hitting and much-needed exposé of crooked business moguls who have orchestrated deeply damaging financial manoeuvres and amassed millions, enjoying impunity nonetheless and leaving India’s economy teetering on the edge.

Book Destroying Democracy

Download or read book Destroying Democracy written by Jane Duncan and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the erosion of democracy across the globe Democracy is being destroyed. This is a crisis that expresses itself in the rising authoritarianism visible in divisive and exclusionary politics, populist political parties and movements, increased distrust in fact-based information and news, and the withering accountability of state institutions. Over the last four decades, democracy has radically shifted to a market democracy in which all aspects of human, non-human and planetary life are commodified, with corporations becoming more powerful than states and their citizens. This is how neoliberal capitalism functions at a systemic level and if left unchecked, is the greatest threat to democracy and a sustainable planet. Volume six of the Democratic Marxism series focuses on how decades of neoliberal capitalism have eroded the global democratic project and how, in the process, authoritarian politics are gaining ground. Scholars and activists from the political left focus on four country cases – India, Brazil, South Africa and the United States of America – in which the COVID-19 pandemic has fuelled and highlighted the pre-existing crisis. They interrogate issues of politics, ecology, state security, media, access to information and political parties, and affirm the need to reclaim and re-build an expansive and inclusive democracy. Destroying Democracy is an invaluable resource for the general public, activists, scholars and students who are interested in understanding the threats to democracy and the rising tide of authoritarianism in the global south and the global north.
