Book The Solid South Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Solid South Classic Reprint written by Emory Speer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Solid South Mr. President and Gentlemen of the Independent Club: Very happy am I to come from my distant Southern home to meet on this felicitous occasion the Independent Club and its honored guests. The opportunity is perhaps salutary. "Home keeping youths," we are told by the Bard of Avon, "have ever homely wits." Indeed it may be feared that all Americans are not a little provincial. It is then, advantageous for a dweller in that clime, whose soft breezes from the Atlantic or the Gulf are tempered by "the wandering summer of the seas," to visit these hyperborean skies which it is not difficult to discern impart a glorious vigor to man and a glowing beauty to woman. Nor, believe me, would you regret if like Aladdin in the Arabian story I could whisk this comely gathering to a land I know and love, where even now "The sweet South breathes o'er banks of violets." where the rose gardens yet bloom, and where the soft moonlight lingers on fields as white as yours, but with the snowy luxuriance of our royal staple. Indeed, the heritage of Americans in those magnificent states somewhat generally known as the Solid South, and the charm of their redundant beauties would kindle a prouder Americanism even in minds accustomed to the opulence of this Empire State, and sated with the wonders of Niagara. The resuscitation of the Southern people since the great civil war will be deemed by the future historian as an epoch in the progress of civilization. Speaking as a Southern man, "native and to the manner born," as one who loves his people with every fibre of his being, while I do not claim that they are all saints, and concede that among them there is a considerable sprinkling of sinners, I yet contend that their record for a generation past is impossible to a people who, however mistaken, were otherwise than intrepid, patriotic and sincere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for the South This book is predicated upon the idea that the formula italicized above is as good now as it was then, and that it sets a basis for amicable race relations not only in the South, but everywhere. And to the extent that the principles laid down in that formula are ignored, repressed, or suppressed, so will the cause of racial amity be retarded. Book How the South Won the Civil War

Download or read book How the South Won the Civil War written by Heather Cox Richardson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies. The South and West equally depended on extractive industries-cotton in the former and mining, cattle, and oil in the latter-giving rise a new birth of white male oligarchy, despite the guarantees provided by the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, and the economic opportunities afforded by expansion. To reveal why this happened, How the South Won the Civil War traces the story of the American paradox, the competing claims of equality and subordination woven into the nation's fabric and identity. At the nation's founding, it was the Eastern "yeoman farmer" who galvanized and symbolized the American Revolution. After the Civil War, that mantle was assumed by the Western cowboy, singlehandedly defending his land against barbarians and savages as well as from a rapacious government. New states entered the Union in the late nineteenth century and western and southern leaders found yet more common ground. As resources and people streamed into the West during the New Deal and World War II, the region's influence grew. "Movement Conservatives," led by westerners Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, claimed to embody cowboy individualism and worked with Dixiecrats to embrace the ideology of the Confederacy. Richardson's searing book seizes upon the soul of the country and its ongoing struggle to provide equal opportunity to all. Debunking the myth that the Civil War released the nation from the grip of oligarchy, expunging the sins of the Founding, it reveals how and why the Old South not only survived in the West, but thrived.

Book How to Sweet Talk a Shark

Download or read book How to Sweet Talk a Shark written by Bill Richardson and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharks are not evil. But they're single-minded and very, very hungry. On land, they take the form of bosses, businesspeople, colleagues, family, and sociopathic neighbors. In the world of former governor of New Mexico and US ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson, they have taken the form of the most powerful people in the world. He's engaged in high-stakes, face-to-face negotiations with Castro, Saddam, the Taliban, two generations of North Korean leadership, and many more of the world's most infamous dictators—and done it so well he was known as the "Undersecretary of Thugs" while with the Clinton administration. Now the 5-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee tells these stories—from Washington, DC, to the Middle East to Pyongyang—in all their intense and sometimes absurd glory. How to Sweet-Talk a Shark is a rare, candid, and entertaining glimpse into an insider's world of high-stakes negotiation—showing Richardson's successes and failures in some of the world's least friendly places. Meanwhile, readers get frank lessons in the art of negotiation: how to prepare, how to size up your opponent, how to understand the nature of power in a standoff, how to give up only what is necessary while getting what you want, and many other strategies Richardson has mastered through at-the-table experience—and from working with other master negotiators like Presidents Obama and Clinton, and Nelson Mandela. These are takeaways that anyone can use to negotiate with the power brokers, dealmakers, and, yes, the hungry sharks in their own lives.

Download or read book Arsenal of Defense written by J'Nell L. Pate and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named after Mexican War general William Jenkins Worth, Fort Worth began as a military post in 1849. More than a century and a half later, the defense industry remains Fort Worth’s major strength with Lockheed Martin’s F-35s and Bell Helicopter’s Ospreys flying the skies over the city. Arsenal of Defense: Fort Worth’s Military Legacy covers the entire military history of Fort Worth from the 1840s with tiny Bird’s Fort to the massive defense plants of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Although the city is popularly known as “Cowtown” for its iconic cattle drives and stockyards, soldiers, pilots, and military installations have been just as important—and more enduring—in Fort Worth’s legacy. Although Bird’s Fort provided defense for early North Texas settlers in the mid nineteenth century, it was the major world conflicts of the twentieth century that developed Fort Worth’s military presence into what it is today. America’s buildup for World War I brought three pilot training fields and the army post Camp. During World War II, headquarters for the entire nation’s Army Air Forces Flying Training Command came to Fort Worth. The military history of Fort Worth has been largely an aviation story—one that went beyond pilot training to the construction of military aircraft. Beginning with Globe Aircraft in 1940, Consolidated in 1942, and Bell Helicopter in 1950, the city has produced many thousands of military aircraft for the defense of the nation. Lockheed Martin, the descendant of Consolidated, represents an assembly plant that has been in continuous existence for over seven decades. With Lockheed Martin the nation’s largest defense contractor, Bell the largest helicopter producer, and the Fort Worth Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Federal Medical Center Carswell the reservist’s training pattern for the nation, Fort Worth’s military defense legacy remains strong. Arsenal of Defense won first place in the Press Women of Texas Communications Contest (2012).
