Book excerpt: ‘Rhythm’ is a poetic journey through the varied phases of human life and the sensitivity created by the surroundings. The inner turmoils portraying different moods, issues of social relevance, nature and mythology are also topics of this poetic endeavour. Significance of life, deepest questions about existence, truth and knowledge, morals and logic, have all been treated in different styles. Words and rhythm have been skillfully maneuvered to suit the subject of each of the poems in this collection. ‘The mystic minstrel’ speaks with the singing bards of Bengal (Baul); ‘A day in a tea garden’ portrays the vibrant day- to-day life of the tea pluckers and in the ‘The divine journey’, ‘Heaven on Earth‘ ,’An odyssey timeless’ paints a picture of the immortal love of the mythological characters Radha and Kanha. ‘A sight at a traffic signal’ is a portrayal of busy urban life. The poems as whole address important aspects of life in an engaging way. The collection as a whole encompass all forms, walks and stages of human existence.

Book excerpt: Begun in 1262 AD, Masnavi-ye Ma ‘navi, or ‘spiritual couplets', is thought to be the longest single-authored ‘mystical’ poem ever written. As the spiritual masterpiece of the Persian Sufi tradition, it teaches how to progress to the ultimate goal of the Sufi path - union with God. Jalaloddin Rumi was a poet and a mystic, but he was first a teacher; in these verses he draws the reader into the complexities of human love and separation and explains the path to divine love through the elimination of self-regard and worldly desires. Drawing on diverse sources from bawdy tales and fables to stories of the prophet Mohammed, these verses are brief in expression yet copious in meaning.

Book A Tale Divine in Rhythm and Rhyme the Bible in Verse

Download or read book A Tale Divine in Rhythm and Rhyme the Bible in Verse written by Josh Wondra and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as a learning exercise as the author endeavored to explain to his Russian-speaking students how rhyme and meter were used in the English language. Designed primarily as a reading aid and an educational tool, it's been created with the following ideas in mind: 1) Reading should be a fun experience. 2) It is not necessary to simplify the Bible to make it understandable for young audiences. 3) Pronounceability leads to usability. Children do not naturally have a harsh distinction between hard and easy words. Either a word is familiar or unknown. There's no need to shy away from advanced vocabulary if it is explainable. Vividly illustrated and meticulously crafted in a poetic style, while appealing to young readers, this is the Bible as it has never been rendered before. This first volume covers the entire book of Genesis, from Adam and Eve and the fall of Mankind to the eve of Israel's dramatic Exodus from Egypt.

Book The Ethnography of Rhythm

Download or read book The Ethnography of Rhythm written by Haun Saussy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Modern Language Association's Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies Who speaks? The author as producer, the contingency of the text, intertextuality, the “device”—core ideas of modern literary theory—were all pioneered in the shadow of oral literature. Authorless, loosely dated, and variable, oral texts have always posed a challenge to critical interpretation. When it began to be thought that culturally significant texts—starting with Homer and the Bible—had emerged from an oral tradition, assumptions on how to read these texts were greatly perturbed. Through readings that range from ancient Greece, Rome, and China to the Cold War imaginary, The Ethnography of Rhythm situates the study of oral traditions in the contentious space of nineteenth- and twentieth-century thinking about language, mind, and culture. It also demonstrates the role of technologies in framing this category of poetic creation. By making possible a new understanding of Maussian “techniques of the body” as belonging to the domain of Derridean “arche-writing,” Haun Saussy shows how oral tradition is a means of inscription in its own right, rather than an antecedent made obsolete by the written word or other media and data-storage devices.
