Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Native Americans camped by its ponds and waterfront, Rhode Island's South Shore has been a magnet for recreational activity, drawing summer visitors whose accommodations ranged from tents to opulent hotels and summer homes. From Narragansett Pier to Watch Hill Point, this book tells the story of our fascination with life by the sea. Drawn by its clean air and pastoral shores, visitors for generations have come back to A[a¬ASouth CountyA[a¬A year after year to fish, swim, sunbathe, and simply rest. Some craved the social whirl of Narragansett, while others opted for the slower lifestyle in rural villages like Matunuck and Jerusalem. Each village and resort had its own identity, which is explored in this collection of postcards and photographs, most from private collections. These pictures show the dramatic changes wrought by the Hurricane of 1938, urban renewal, and development.

Book The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade

Download or read book The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade written by Theodore E. Stebbins and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Johnson Heade was one of the most significant American painters of the nineteenth century, creator of portraits, history and genre pictures, still lifes, ornithological studies, landscapes, and marines, and his own unique orchid and hummingbird compositions. This book brings a perspective to Heade and his works, presenting him as one of the most original and productive painters of his time. Theodore Stebbins builds on his acclaimed 1975 study of Heade, drawing on several newly discovered collections of Heade's letters and the painter's own Brazilian journal. Stebbins tells of Heade's training and early career as an itinerant portraitist and discusses his move to New York, where, under the influence of Frederic E. Church, he began painting landscapes and seascapes. He examines Heade's relationships with patrons and dealers, writers and scientists, and he sheds new light on Heade’s trips to Brazil, to the Central American tropics, and to London. And he describes Heade's move to Florida in 1883, which marked not his retirement but a final period of creativity that lasted until his death in 1904. The book includes not only an examination of Heade's life and works but also reproductions of all his 620 known paintings, including nearly 250 that have been discovered since 1975.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to the smallest state in the United States, Rhode Island, is by no means the shortest guide in this series. The Ocean State has a rich and extensive history which provides plenty of material to be covered. Despite a small geographic region, there is plenty of historical sites, photographs of churches and houses, and plenty of driving tours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This alphabet book is a celebration of the South Shore of Nova Scotia and the art of rug hooking. Crafted by twenty-five local artists, the unique rugs in this collection take inspiration from the natural world around them. The River House Rug Hookers meet regularly at River House, a little shop nestled right on the banks of the Petite Riviere in Nova Scotia. The group wanted to embark on a project celebrating the local area, and collaboratively decided to make an alphabet book. Each artist picked a letter from an envelope, and then designed and hooked a piece based on word(s) starting with that letter. Each rug hooker submitted a description to accompany their piece, telling the story of their rug, the world that inspired it, and the materials used to create their piece. Perfect for locals, tourists, and those who want to show their support for local artists, South Shore Alphabet is a delightful and artistic exploration of a unique place in Canada.
