Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, 1906, Vol. 15 Lacepede admits a most delicate olfactory susceptibility in fish. It is, above all, in air - breathing animals that we find the Olfactory sense least developed (birds, dolphins). The ancients were unanimous in claiming that birds had a very remarkable acuity and certainty of Olfaction. They even cited the fable of the crows and vultures flying from Africa and Asia to Europe after the battle of Pharsalia. In modern times it is claimed. On the contrary, that birds are poorly en dowed with this power. Buffon and Cuvier report that hawks seize upon their prey when it is struck and before it exhales any odor, while a few leaves thrown over it are sufficient to protect it from their attack. Milne Edwards has made some experiments in the Museum of Natural History. He placed, in a cage of vultures, a box covered by a curtain. This was torn at different times, until the birds became accustomed to the object and paid no attention to it. He then introduced into this box, covered in this simple way, some food with a strong nauseous odor, without the birds noticing it. When they were deprived of their customary nourishment they were bewildered but made no attempt to attack the box. It is sight that plays the chief role in all birds of prey. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Laryngology, Rhinology,& Otology, Vol. 34: A Record of the Current Literature Relating to the Throat, Nose, and Ear At the present time, however, there are strong indications visible of the rise of a new and energetic spirit in our countries, and we may look forward with hope and high confidence to our speciality sharing in the new life that is rising to flood all departments of national activity, and it is intended that the Journal of Laryngology will provide for all workers in our speciality a means of publicity at once easily accessible and popular. Easily accessible. Because we wish to emphasise the fact that we represent no particular school, or clique, or style, or opinion. These columns are open to all who have anything to say that may seem to them to be of value or of interest to their fellow-practitioners, and we call upon all such to lend a hand to make the Journal as broadly representative of British Oto-Laryngology as they can, in order to sustain and to enhance the high standing we have already been successful in reaching in our special department of medicine. Warfare Injuries of the Larynx. By W. Douglas Harmer, M. C. Cantab., F.R.C.S.Eng. Mr. President, - I must thank the Council for honouring me with the invitation to open the discussion on this subject. In the following paper I have thought it wise to confine my remarks to the description of gun-shot wounds of the larynx, these cases forming a large and important group in military surgery. To obtain the necessary information investigations have been carried out on wide lines and 245 patients have been discovered, including: Group I. - 108 cases, particulars of which have been obtained partly by personal observations (24), and partly as the result of circulating a letter to 80 laryngologists in Great Britain and France, notes having been received from - Brown Kelly 18, Howarth 6, Rose 4, Tilley 4, E. D. D. Davies 4, Whale 4, Milligan 3, Mollison 3, Smurthwaite 3, Abercrombie, StClair Thomson, Seymour Jones, Hastings, Wilkinson, Graham, O'Malley, Wvlie, and West 2 each, MacGregor, Westmacott, Wright, Peters, Buckland Jones, Dundas Grant, French, Hill, Hutchinson, Low, Bain, Whillis, Faulder, Tod, Stewart, and Woods 1 each. Group II. - 110 cases, the notes of which were obtained by examining the records of 1873 patients suffering from gun-shot wounds of the neck and treated in home hospitals during 1914 and 1915. These notes were largely valueless because of the absence of accurate details, but the investigations brought out the relative frequency of injuries of the larynx in neck wounds (1 in 17 cases). Moure states that in the Crimean War the proportion was 1 in 460. Delorme gives 3 per cent, in the present war. Group III. 23 post-mortem specimens obtained from the Royal College of Surgeons, a selection of which has been exhibited to-day. Also 4 fatal cases, notes of which were supplied by Capt. Whale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, 1911, Vol. 20 Epithelioma of the skin is one Of these. It is true'that these cases are improved, and even cured under X-ray treat ment, but, as you know, that is a complicated procedure, and not always without danger. This is especially important in the cases seen by me which affected the nose and its vicinity, the upper lip and the cheek. A scar or a burn left after the application of tlie Roentgen rays is unsightly in man or woman. In the four cases treated with radium we have had very gratifying results. Case 1. (presented to the Section on Laryngology of the New York Academy of Medicine, December 23d S. S 42 years of age, noticed a blister on his nose eight years be fore consulting me, which bzoke and discharged a watery secretion, and then dried up. Later, other blisters appeared and disappeared on the left all nasi, the upper lip, and' the neighboring parts. The patient consulted one physician after another - that was in Russia - and finally fell into the hands of a barber, who cauterized him so energetically that a per foration was produced which necessitated a plastic operation of the lip, etc. This cured him for the time being, but four years later the Old trouble recommenced. The blisters ap peared and disappeared. And he was rarely free of them. Dur ing the last four years, however, the blisters did not break. He has been in this country for three years, and still suffers in spite of everything he has tried. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
