Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric This manual represents an attempt to bring together in one volume such textbook matter as is needed to facilitate the teaching of composition in secondary schools. It is based on the following conceptions: I In the earlier years of the course emphasis should fall on practice in oral and written expression through the medium of simple, interesting, carefully graded tasks in composition, accompanied by such drill in the use of words and the manipulation of sentences as is likely to aid in correcting common errors and lead to fluency. II In the later years of the course this practice should be continued, the tasks in written composition less frequent but calling for longer, maturer effort; and something, though not too much, of rhetorical theory should be placed before the pupil. III As the course progresses, practice in expression and practice in the intelligent reading of masterpieces should, within reasonable bounds, be correlated, this to be managed in part through the study of rhetoric. The chapters of the book are so arranged in unified groups, each group in large measure independent, that the subject matter lends itself readily to rearrangement to meet the varying needs of different schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric and English Composition This volume is a careful revision, with many changes, corrections, and additions, of my Elements of Rhetoric and English Composition (first and second high school courses), published in 1899 and 1900. It now contains all the material necessary, in my judgment, for secondary school training in this subject. For advice and assistance in the revision, I am particularly indebted to Mr. George A. Sawyer, M.A., instructor in English in the De Witt Clinton High School, New York City, who has revised almost all the exercises in Chapters I to X, as well as to Miss Ellen E. Garrigues, of the same school; Mr. Theodore C. Mitchill, of the Brooklyn Boys' High School; Mr. John D. Haney, of the Wadleigh High School; Mr. W. D. Crockett, of the State Normal School, Mansfield, Pa.; and to many others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Much of the matter in the two books is the same, but the Manual differs from the Elements in arrangement,1 and it takes up the several subjects in greater detail and carries them farther. Book Steps in English

Download or read book Steps in English written by Thos; C. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps in English: Composition Rhetoric This book aims to teach young people to write effectively by having them write. It furnishes them with models from the masters, and asks them to use their own experiences as working material. Further, in the second part it develops a plan to teach them to write accurately, by training them to recognize, and thus to avoid, their errors. That his own hours are full of experiences adapted to literary expression is made known to the pupil by the study of literature in its relation to life. Of these experiences he has definite knowledge, and about them he can think clearly; and clear thinking, which comes only from clear knowing, usually results in ready and forceful expression. The book, in addition, lays a foundation for the appreciation of literature. To profit by the master writers the pupil must be able to recognize the value of their works. Accordingly he is here taught that literature is full of suggestion, and he is made to understand the various devices by which an author conveys this suggestion. When these methods have been discovered and sufficiently illustrated, the learner is asked to use them in writing about familiar experiences. Thus he is given a higher standard than a properly punctuated, rhetorical statement of facts, with the result that his theme work becomes a vital thing, - a pleasure, not a task. This book at first calls for compositions of only a few paragraphs in length. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English: Composition-Rhetoric-Literature The literature selections have been edited with the design not only of supplying necessary information but also of inducing the student to do his own thinking. There is at present far too much so-called appreciation and far too little real thought expended upon literature. In the prepara tion of the Exercises and of the Notes and Questions the authors have constantly borne in mind this supreme aim of education - the development of the ability to think. Teachers are therefore urged to require the students to write all the Exercises and to answer all the Questions. Book Modern Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Dana O. Jensen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Composition and Rhetoric The general aim of this book is to give the beginning college student a thorough training in the fundamentals of composition. We have tried to include such theory, fact, and practice as are necessary to competent, clear, and straightforward writing; at the same time we have attempted to make plain to the student how he may express himself as an individual. We have not addressed the professional writer, or even the accomplished amateur, but the person who needs instruction and training before he can perform the requirements of everyday college and post-college life. The particular aim of the book, however, is more specific. In any course and in any textbook there must be some concern for individual differences in students differences in training, in ability, and in personality. But in spite of the varying needs of students there must be some regimentation, as regrettable as regimentation may seem to the instructor who recognizes his students as individuals. This need of basic standardization we have attempted to meet in Part I, which includes those fundamentals of organization, paragraph structure, and sentence structure that every writer must command before clear communication is possible. Such details as the, student may be sup posed to have learned before entering college, and such as he will need to know only for special occasions, we have placed in appendixes. Part I is addressed primarily to the average student. Part II deals with the various special kinds of writing which most students will at one time or another have to do. It is thus designed to furnish the next major step in the training of the average student who has mastered the more fundamental principles outlined in Part I. Book American Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Donald Davidson A. Professor of English and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Composition and Rhetoric Twenty years ago, in the Preface to the First Edition, the principles upon which this textbook is based were briefly set forth. Since that time, wars and social convulsions, technology and science, have wrought great changes in the world, and so have changed in some degree the context in which the principles of a textbook like this must be applied. But only the context is changed; the principles are not. In its principles the art of rhetoric is not political, nor, in our modern relativist sense, can it ever be scientific. The more shifting the context, the greater the need for firmness as to principles. The criticism to which our educational practices are being subjected, from without and within the Grove of Academe, gives sharp contemporary emphasis to these truths. It therefore seems worth while to state again, even more explicitly than in my first preface, some of the main convictions that have governed the preparation of this and preceding editions of American Composition and Rhetoric. With other devoted teachers of the subject I hold - First, that rhetoric is no mere "tool subject," as is often speciously argued, but has a general educational value beyond all calculation both in its discipline and in the rich cultural content that, through the ages, has been inseparable from the discipline. Second, as to the discipline, that rhetoric cannot be mastered apart from grammar or grammar fully understood except in its living rhetorical function; and that the study of language is, of course, an integral part of this three-fold discipline. Third, as to content, that the student deserves to have before him models of enduring merit, impressive in their substance as well as in their execution; and that merely provocative models, whatever their immediate interest, have no place in the standard course in composition and rhetoric. Fourth, that the progress of the student, as in all other fundamental disciplines, must be from the simple to the complex, but that, since rhetoric is an art, combining all elements in one act, practice in writing whole compositions is essential at every stage.
