The author is actively involved in advanced propulsion research and contributes with his own experience to many of the presented topics. The book is written for anyone who is interested in how space travel can be revolutionized.

Book Proceedings of the 12th Reinventing Space Conference

Download or read book Proceedings of the 12th Reinventing Space Conference written by Scott Hatton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 2014 Reinventing Space conference present a number of questions in the context of a constantly innovating space industry, from addressing the future of global cooperation, investigating the impact of cuts in US government spending on the private space sector, and probing the overall future of the commercial launch sector. Space tourism and new technology promise the revival of interest in space development (the Apollo Era was the first period of intense space activity and growth). The need to create dramatically lower cost, responsive and reliable launch systems and spacecraft has never been more vital. Advances in technology are allowing smaller and cheaper satellites to be orbited - from cubesats to nanosatellites to femtosatellites. Thanks to more efficient new launch possibilities, low cost access to space is becoming ever more achievable. Commercial companies and countries are targeting the industry with new funding. Organised by the British Interplanetary Society, the presentations at this conference thoroughly address these challenges and opportunities.

Book Thermospheric Density and Wind Determination from Satellite Dynamics

Download or read book Thermospheric Density and Wind Determination from Satellite Dynamics written by Eelco Doornbos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth's atmosphere is often portrayed as a thin and finite blanket covering our planet, separate from the emptiness of outer space. In reality, the transition is gradual and a tiny fraction of the atmophere gases is still present at the altitude of low orbiting satellites. The very high velocities of these satellites ensure that their orbital motion can still be considerably affected by air density and wind. This influence can be measured using accelerometers and satellite tracking techniques. The opening chapters of this thesis provide an excellent introduction to the various disciplines that are involved in the interpretation of these observations: orbital mechanics, satellite aerodynamics and upper atmospheric physics. A subsequent chapter, at the heart of this work, covers advances in the algorithms used for processing satellite accelerometry and Two-Line Element (TLE) orbit data. The closing chapters provide an elaborate analysis of the resulting density and wind products, which are generating many opportunities for further research, to improve the modelling and understanding of the thermosphere system and its interactions with the lower atmosphere, the ionosphere-magnetosphere system and the Sun.

Book The Earth s Ionosphere

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Kelly
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323148050
  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book The Earth s Ionosphere written by Michael Kelly and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth's Ionosphere: Plasma Physics and Electrodynamics emphasizes the study of plasma physics and electrodynamics of the ionosphere, including many aeronomical influences. The ionosphere is somewhat of a battleground between the earth's neutral atmosphere and the sun's fully ionized atmosphere, in which the earth is embedded. One of the challenges of ionosphere research is to know enough about these two vast fields of research to make sense out of ionospheric phenomena. This book provides insights into how these competing sources of mass, momentum, and energy compete for control of the ionosphere. Some of the topics discussed include the fundamentals of ionospheric plasma dynamics; equatorial plasma instabilities; high-latitude electrodynamics; and instabilities and structure in the high-latitude ionosphere. Throughout this text only the region above 90 km are discussed, ignoring the D region entirely. This publication is a good source of information for students and individuals conducting research on earth's ionosphere.

Book Static Diffusion Models of the Upper Atmosphere with Empirical Temperature Profiles

Download or read book Static Diffusion Models of the Upper Atmosphere with Empirical Temperature Profiles written by Luigi G. Jacchia and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tables of atmospheric density and composition are computed for a wide range of exospheric temperatures, starting from a fixed set of boundary conditions at 120 km. The diffusion equation is integrated following empirical temperature profiles derived from satellite drag over the years. Formulae are given which relate the exospheric temperature to solar and geomagnetic activity and allow for the diurnal and semi-annual variations. The different response of the density at the 200-km level to different types of heating is briefly discussed.."--Page 1.
