Book Fuel Failure in Normal Operation of Water Reactors

Download or read book Fuel Failure in Normal Operation of Water Reactors written by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication results from an IAEA technical meeting, held with the objective to provide Member States with a forum to share data, experience and knowledge in the area of fuel failure during normal operation of water cooled reactors. In spite of the low fuel failure rate in currently operating water cooled nuclear power reactors, there is a continued high level of interest in fuel failures, owing to the problems and inconvenience caused by fuel failures and to the generally accepted goal of achieving a zero failure rate. This requires a detailed knowledge of existing failure mechanisms, their root causes and remedies. A total of 21 papers addressing those issues were presented and discussed at the meeting. The main conclusions and recommendations are summarized in this publication.

Book Quality and Reliability Aspects in Nuclear Power Reactor Fuel Engineering

Download or read book Quality and Reliability Aspects in Nuclear Power Reactor Fuel Engineering written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved fuel reliability means reduced fuel failures in reactor operation. Fuel failures, with their consequent adverse impact on the environment and requirements for additional waste management, result in costs for remediation, 'failed core' operation and maintenance. Therefore, poor performance of fuel can lead to uncompetitive operational conditions for a nuclear power plant. A revision of the earlier edition, this publication has been significantly extended to support nuclear fuel designers, manufacturers, reactor operators, and fuel engineers and managers on fuel design and design changes, fuel manufacturing, qualification, in-reactor operation, and on-site services to achieve excellence in fuel reliability and performance and safe operation of nuclear fuel under all applicable plant states.

Book Observation of Fuel Failure Behavior During In pile Meltdown Tests Using High speed Photography and a Transparent Autoclave

Download or read book Observation of Fuel Failure Behavior During In pile Meltdown Tests Using High speed Photography and a Transparent Autoclave written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission has sponsored an extensive program to investigate various aspects of the safety of water-cooled power reactor systems. As part of this program an experimental study was undertaken to provide information required for the analysis of excursion accidents in water-cooled thermal reactors. This study involved subjecting single fuel-rod specimens in a transparent autoclave to destructive nuclear transients, and observing, by photographic techniques, the behavior of the specimens during the transients. The principal objectives were to obtain sufficient data to define the failure threshold energy and mechanism of failure for Zircaloy-clad, U02-core fuel rods. Since zirconium readily reacts with water at metal temperatures above 1000 C, the contribution of the metal-water reaction to fuel failure behavior was assessed during this study.
