Book excerpt: RETREAD SQUADRON is about an Air National Guard Squadron that is fat and corrupt when the Korean War breaks out. Captain Marshall Stone, the central character, loves flying almost as much as he loves his beautiful wife, Georgie. Through his perception, we see the squadron reshaping into a fighting unit capable of carrying out the dirty missions that the F-84 pilots are ordered to fly in the war. Hanging over all that happens is the conviction that military decisions are being by politicians who are willing to sacrifice the lives of American fighting men and our country's honor to avoid any confrontation with countries that support our enemy. Captain Stone keeps his perspective as he flies dangerous and predictable missions, while at home his marriage is threatened. He focuses his skills on the missions, achieving some glorious moments by flying all out beyond normal limitations when his comrades need help. He comes through these experiences with a clear view of the priorities that can make his life worth living. The squadron, too, survives and triumphs in the end.

Book excerpt: World War One pilots were the knights of the sky, and the press and public idolised them as gallant young heroes. At just twenty-three, Major Stanley Woolley is the old man and commanding officer of Goshawk Squadron. He abhors any notion of chivalry in the clouds and is determined to obliterate the decent, gentlemanly outlook of his young, public school-educated pilots - for their own good. But as the war goes on he is forced to throw greener and greener pilots into the meat grinder. Goshawk Squadron finds its gallows humour and black camaraderie no defence against a Spandau bullet to the back of the head.

Book Swashbucklers and Black Sheep

Download or read book Swashbucklers and Black Sheep written by Bruce Gamble and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A stunning portrait of incredibly courageous men and their awesome flying machines.”—Alex Kershaw, author of The Few Marine Fighting Squadron (VMF) 214 is the world's most famous fighter squadron. Its second wartime squadron commander was the legendary Greg “Pappy” Boyington. Boyington and the squadron were the loose inspiration for the late-seventies NBC television series Baa Baa Black Sheep, which was later syndicated under the name Black Sheep Squadron. Swashbucklers and Black Sheep is a comprehensive illustrated history of the squadron from its formation and first two combat tours on Guadalcanal as the Swashbucklers, which included their transition to the iconic gull-winged Corsair, to the arrival of their second commander, Pappy Boyington, after which they became the Black Sheep. The squadron's combat over Bougainville and Rabaul and the story of Boyington being shot down are covered, as are the squadron's exploits in the latter part of the war (while Boyington was a POW), which culminated in the heavy losses suffered aboard the carrier USS Franklin. The squadron's service in Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror complete the storied history of VMF 214. In addition to a rich collection of historical photography, Swashbucklers and Black Sheep features combat aviation artwork from four of America's top aviation artists: John Shaw, Jim Laurier, Craig Kodera, and Bob Rasmussen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They called it Vesuvius It was the mission on which D-day depended and it was given to 633 Squadron, the R.A.F.’s crack squadron at a time when every ounce of skill counted. They were top pilots who flew with the recklessness of a passionate hatred for the enemy. But although they were fighting machines, they were also men. There was the Wing Commander, tough, cynical, careless of his life but not of his crews; Gillibrand, the big, brash flier who never knew when to stop; Bergman, the Norwegian resistance fighter whose bravery was remarkable even when acts of courage were an everyday event. The planes roared down the runway on that cold spring morning. And the men who had lived together, trained together, played together, were off on a mission that could change the course of the war. "YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO ABORT MISSION" The desperate message crackled over the R/T. A dangerous mission had become suicidal. But as their planes screamed over the black fjords of Norway, the men of 633 Squadron refused to turn back. Caught between attacking German aircraft and the grim mountain walls, they plunged straight on into a howling valley of death. Adapted as a 1964 movie starring Cliff Robertson and George Chakiris, directed by Walter E. Grauman.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1943, while the Axis troops had just withdrawn from North Africa, the Allied forces were about to conquer Europe starting from what Winston Churchill considered the weak link of the Italian-German alliance, Italy, the “soft underbelly of Europe”. Through Operation Husky, thousands of young men from different military units, all belonging to the Anglo-American alliance, but of different nationalities, landed in Sicily. Among them was a young Rhodesian photographer, Algernon de Blois Spurr, enlisted in the Southern Rhodesian Air Force, who together with his airborne unit, the 55 Squadron of the British Royal Air Force, flew up the boot, in a journey that ended in Rome in the summer of 1944. His small camera, brought with him during the long journey, immortalized moments of war and daily life, constituting an important testimony of those crucial days, which, preciously preserved in a drawer in South Africa, resurface today, thanks to his son who granted the publication, and to the author, who has combined the shots with a meticulous reconstruction of the war events that accompanied the Squadron, and that come to life in this work, in a journey unpublished and sometimes exciting, that from the Sicilian island crosses the peninsula, to the eternal city.
