Book excerpt: This unique study from the OECD Development Centre presents a comprehensive review by independent experts of the relationships and division of responsibility between the 22 member governments of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), and NGOs from these donor countries, working in international development. Additional chapters cover the roles of the European Union and the World Bank. Among other themes, the book looks at two very significant issues. First, at the way in which an overemphasis on evaluation may be leading NGOs to focus purely on measuring their output, thus choosing activities which are easily accountable. Second, it examines the important impacts of the evolution in the funding relationship between governments and NGOs - from matching grants to contracts - where NGOs must increasingly compete for contracts.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book brings together a wide range of higher education practitioners from across disciplines. Their chapters suggest innovative approaches to learning, teaching and delivering a tertiary education experience that centres social justice as a core mission of universities. The authors address the ways in which universities grapple with the challenges involved in the selection processes, administration, teaching and learning and student support associated with an increasingly large student population drawn from a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, including many students who will be returning to live overseas. Some of the specific challenges of these developments have included those of selection, academic literacy, independent learning, student support and student engagement. A second dimension is the traditional role of the universities as sources of independent intellectual and ethical critique of social institutions, both in terms of research and public intellectual contribution to political and social policy debates, and in terms of the formation of students in their capacities as critical, ethical, citizens and professionals. This social-ethical critique has traditionally been built into the humanities and the social science disciplines and the 'helping professions' but has now found its way into other disciplines and professional areas, such as business and engineering. As well, broader social policy and political discourse has more explicitly embraced social-ethical agendas of inclusiveness and marginalisation of social groups; recognition of the damage to the overall society of enduring and increasing social inequality." -- BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in both Africa and Australia have brought the two continents closer together. In Africa, a resources boom, greater political stability, and the creation of the new regional institutions have contributed to economic and human development, even if many challenges including conflict, poverty and exploitation remain. Australia has commercial and political interests in Africa and, if it wants to be a significant global actor, must engage with both Africa’s challenges and its growing international influence. Since coming to power in 2007, Australian Labor governments have pursued ‘new engagement’ with Africa after decades of relative neglect. This book, the first study of its kind, explores the key contexts for and dimensions of contemporary Australian foreign policy towards Africa. It highlights a deepening of diplomatic and political relations, a trebling of the official aid budget to Africa, and over $50 billion of Australian-based investment in Africa’s resources sector, and suggests measures to make such engagement sustainable and of mutual benefit. Contributions to the book come from academics, civil servants, diplomats and politicians.
