Download or read book The Central Bank and the Financial System written by C. Goodhart and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-03-06 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the current day-to-day operations of Central Banks are subject to continuous comment and frequent criticism, their structural role within the economic system as a whole is generally accepted without much question and despite several attempts to challenge the value of the institution made by economists in recent decades. Professor C.A.E. Goodhart is ideally positioned to assess the role of the Central Bank being equally familiar with the theoretical arguments and with the actual working of central banks. Part 1 analyses the general purposes and functions of the Central Bank within the financial system and their evolution over time, Part 2 concentrates on the current objectives and operations of Central Banks, the maintenance of price stability in particular, and Part 3 analyses the broader issues of financial regulation. This book, providing a thorough and clear discussion of the questions connected with the role of the Central Bank in a modern financial system, will prove indispensable for students, academics and practitioners.

Download or read book Issues in the Governance of Central Banks written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report by the Central Bank Governance Group presents information intended to help decision-makers set up governance arrangements that are most suitable for their own circumstances. The report draws on a large body of information on the design and operation of central banks that the BIS has brought together since it initiated work on central bank governance in the early 1990s. The need to deal with chronic inflation in the 1970s and 1980s prompted the identification of price stability as a formal central bank objective and led to a significant reworking of governance arrangements. The current global financial crisis could have equally important implications for central banks, particularly with respect to their role in fostering financial stability. Although it is too early to know how central banking will change as a result, the report takes an important first step in identifying governance questions that the crisis poses.

Download or read book How Do Central Banks Talk written by Alan S. Blinder and published by Centre for Economic Policy Research. This book was released on 2001 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago, secrecy was the byword in central banking circles, but now the unmistakable trend is towards greater openness and transparency. This, the third Geneva Report on the World Economy, describes and evaluates some of the changes in how central banks talk to the markets, to the press, and to the public. The report first assesses the case for transparency ? defined as providing sufficient information for the public to understand the policy regime ? and concludes that it is very strong, based on both policy effectiveness and democratic accountability. It then examines what should be the content of communication and argues that central banks ought to spell out their long-run objectives and methods. It then investigates the link between the decision-making process and central bank communication, drawing a distinction between individualistic and collegial committees. The report concludes with a review of the communications strategies of some of the main central banks.
Download or read book Monetary Stability through International Cooperation written by Age F.P. Bakker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monetary Stability through International Cooperation contains essays written by high ranking policy makers in the field of central banking and international finance, written in honour of André Szász, who has been Executive Director of De Nederlandsche Bank since 1973, responsible for international monetary relations. Colleagues from several other central banks, from finance ministries and from international institutions pay tribute to him by analysing the conditions fostering European as well as global monetary stability. The book provides an inside view of the thinking of monetary officials at the turn of 1993/1994, when the currency turmoil in the ERM of mid-1993 had subsided and views on its implications for exchange rate management and, more generally, for European integration were taking shape. Topics include exchange rate stabilisation, policy coordination and central bank independence. A second section, on the international monetary system, includes essays on the policy implications of present day dynamic financial markets as well as the role of the IMF. This book, written by `insiders for an insider', provides valuable insights to those who are interested in contemporary international monetary relations.
