Book Dramas at Westminster

Download or read book Dramas at Westminster written by Marc Geddes and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on unprecedented access to the UK Parliament, this book challenges how we understand and think about accountability between government and Parliament. Drawing on three months of research in Westminster, and over forty-five interviews, this book focuses on the everyday practices of Members of Parliament and officials to reveal how parliamentarians perform their scrutiny roles. Some MPs become specialists while others act as lone wolves; some are there to try to defend their party while others want to learn about policy. Amongst these different styles, chairs of committees have to try to reconcile these interpretations and either act as committee-orientated catalysts or attempt to impose order as leadership-orientated chieftains. All of this pushes and pulls scrutiny in competing directions, and tells us that accountability depends on individual beliefs, everyday practices and the negotiation of dilemmas. In this way, MPs and officials create a drama or spectacle of accountability and use their performance on the parliamentary stage to hold government to account. Dramas at Westminster: Select committees and the quest for accountability offers the most up-to-date and detailed research on committee practices in the House of Commons, following a range of reforms since 2010.

Book Eating in America

  • Release : 1977
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Eating in America written by United States. Congress. Senate. Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1977 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Senator George McGovern "This report identifies dietary risk factors, recommends more healthful levels of consumption, and provides guidance in achieving these dietary goals." —George McGovern, Chairman, Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs The above statement is taken from Senator McGovern's specially written foreword to this book, the body of which consists of a full reprint of "Dietary Goals for the United States," prepared by the staff of the U.S. Senate's Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs and first released at a press conference held on January 14, 1977. The first part of the book highlights the nutritional benefits and health dangers of various kinds of readily available foods and puts forward six specific goals relating to the maximum total amounts and optimal relative proportions of these various foodstuffs recommended for the daily diet of normal adults. The book's second part presents recommendations for government action, such as programs of public education in the schools and on television and legislation requiring fuller and more meaningful nutritional labeling of food products. Dietary goals cannot of course be imposed by Federal fiat—but an educated public and informed consumers can make their demands and (health-oriented) desires felt in the marketplace. And every exhortation to "Drink XXX-Cola" and "Eat Rich Red Meat" can be countered by a quiet, factual examination of where following these plugs could lead.

Book excerpt: Study of the CIA's Detention and Interrogation Program - Foreword, Findings and Conclusions, and Executive Summary. The Committee Study of the Central Intelligence Agency's Detention and Interrogation Program, commonly known as the CIA Torture Report, is a 6,000-page report compiled by the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) about the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)'s Detention and Interrogation Program using enhanced interrogation techniques (a euphemism for torture) on detainees following the September 11 attacks in 2001. The full report has not been published, but the committee voted in April 2014 to release the recommendations, executive summary, and findings of the report. A 525-page unclassified portion of the report was released on December 9, 2014, after a presentation on the floor of the Senate by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the chairwoman of the Select Committee on Intelligence. Over 90% of the report remains classified. The report, which took four years and $40 million to compile, focused on 2001-06. It detailed actions by CIA officials and shortcomings of the detention project. One key finding was that enhanced interrogation techniques did not help acquire actionable intelligence or gain cooperation from detainees.
