Book The Official Record

Download or read book The Official Record written by Peter Finn and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction, control and preservation of the Official Record is inherently contested. Those seeking greater openness and (democratic) accountability argue 'sunlight is [...] the best of disinfectants’, while others seek stricter information control because, to their mind, sound government arises when advice and policy are formulated secretly. This edited volume explores the intersection of the Official Record, oversight, national security and democracy. Through US, UK and Canadian case studies, this volume will benefit higher level undergraduate readers and above to explore the Official Record in the context of the national security operations of democratic states. All chapters are research-based pieces of original writing that feature a document appendix containing primary documents (often excerpts) that are key to a chapter’s narrative. As a result, this book interrogates the boundaries between national security, accountability, oversight, and the Official Record.

Book Terrorism International Case Law Reporter 2008 Volume I

Download or read book Terrorism International Case Law Reporter 2008 Volume I written by Michael Newton and published by . This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism: International Case Law Reporter is an annual collection of the most important cases in security law from around the world. Handpicked and introduced by internationally renowned terrorism scholar Michael Newton and by a distinguished board of experts from around the world, the cases in this series cover topics as diverse as human rights, immigration, freedom of speech, and organizational status. For scholars, students, and practitioners seeking an authoritative and comprehensive resource for research into security law jurisprudence, this unique series serves that specialized purpose like none other on the market. With the 2008 edition of Terrorism: International Case Law Reporter, Oxford introduces detailed headnotes to the series. Professor Michael Newton and his team have provided, for each case, a robust summary and a concise statement of the case's central issues and holding. This edition also adds new topics to the series' purview, including the contentious issue of what legal status enemy combatants possess in U.S. courts and the equally volatile issue of whether agents of a state may be held criminally liable for terrorism when carrying out official duties. General Editor Newton has also added Israel and the Middle East as necessary new regional topics for a series that covers terrorism-related jurisprudence worldwide. Indeed, many of the prominent cases in this year's edition come from non-U.S. courts, including an Argetinian case on state terrorism and crimes against humanity. That case, Velasco, appears in this edition in the only English translation available anywhere.

Book Blood Year

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Kilcullen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 0190600543
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Blood Year written by David Kilcullen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, a resurgent and bellicose Russia took over Crimea and fueled a civil war in Eastern Ukraine; post-Saddam Iraq lost a third of its territory to an army of hyper-violent millennialists; and the peace process in Israel seemed to completely collapse. In short, the post-Cold War security order that the US had constructed after 1991 seemed to be coming apart at the seams. David Kilcullen was one of the architects of America's strategy in the late phases of the second Gulf War, and he has also spent time in Afghanistan and other hotspots. In Blood Year, he provides a wide-angle view of the current situation in the Middle East and analyzes how America and the West ended up in such dire circumstances. Kilcullen lays much of the blame on Bush's initial decision to invade Iraq (which had negative secondary effects in Afghanistan), but also takes Obama to task for simply withdrawing and adopting a "leading from behind" strategy. As events have proven, Kilcullen contends, withdrawal was a fundamentally misguided plan. The U.S. had uncorked the genie, and it had a responsibility to at least attempt to keep it under control. Instead, the U.S. is at a point where administration officials state that the losses of Ramadi and Palmyra are manageable setbacks. Kilcullen argues that the U.S. needs to re-engage in the region, whether it wants to or not, because it is largely responsible for the situation that is now unfolding. Blood Year is an essential read for anyone interested in understanding not only why the region that the U.S. invaded a dozen years ago has collapsed into utter chaos, but also what the U.S. can do to alleviate the grim situation.

Book Lessons and Legacies of the War On Terror

Download or read book Lessons and Legacies of the War On Terror written by Gershon Shafir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the lessons and legacies of the U.S.-led "Global War on Terror," utilizing the framework of a political "moral panic." A decade after 9/11, it is increasingly difficult to deny that terror has prevailed – not as a specific enemy, but as a way of life. Transport, trade, and communications are repeatedly threatened and disrupted worldwide. While the pace and intensity of terror attacks have abated, many of the temporary security measures and sacrifices of liberty adopted in their immediate aftermath have become more or less permanent. This book examines the social, cultural, and political drivers of the war on terror through the framework of a "political moral panic": the exploration of threats to particular individuals or institutions that come to be viewed as threats to a way of life, social norms and values, civilization, and even morality itself. Drawing upon a wide range of domestic and international case studies, this volume reinforces the need for reason, empathy, and a dogged defence of principle in the face of terror. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism studies, human rights, U.S. foreign policy, American politics, and Security Studies and I.R. in general.

Download or read book Secrecy Law and Society written by Greg Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentators have shown how a ‘culture of security’ ushered in after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 has involved exceptional legal measures and increased recourse to secrecy on the basis of protecting public safety and safeguarding national security. In this context, scholars have largely been preoccupied with the ways that increased security impinges upon civil liberties. While secrecy is justified on public interest grounds, there remains a tension between the need for secrecy and calls for openness, transparency and disclosure. In law, secrecy has implications for the separation of powers, due process, and the rule of law, raising fundamental concerns about open justice, procedural fairness and human rights. Beyond the counterterrorism and legal context, scholarly interest in secrecy has been concerned with the credibility of public and private institutions, as well as the legacies of secrecy across a range of institutional and cultural settings. By exploring the intersections between secrecy, law and society, this volume is a timely and critical intervention in secrecy debates traversing various fields of legal and social inquiry. It will be a useful resource for academic researchers, university teachers and students, as well as law practitioners and policymakers interested in the legal and socio-legal dimensions of secrecy.
