Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Convention: Held at Cleveland, July 8th and 9th, 1880 for the Purpose of Forming a State Bar Association Constitution. The proceedings of this committee shall he deemed confidential and kept secret except so far as reports of the same shall be necessarily and officially made to the association. XIV. Committee on legal biography. The committee on legal biography shall provide for the preservation among the archives of the association of suitable written or printed memorials of the lives and characters of deceased members of the Ohio Bar. Secretary. The secretary shall keep a record of the proceedings and conduct the correspondence of the association, and perform the usual duties of such office. Treasure. The treasurer shall collect and by order of the executive committee disburse all funds of the association and keep regular accounts, which at all times shall he open to the inspection of any member or members of the executive committee. Annual Meeting. This association shall meet annually at such time and place as the executive committee may select, and those present at such meeting shall constitute a quorum. Dues. The admission fee will in all cases be $2.00. The annual dues of members shall he $2.00, to lie paid yearly on or before the first day of the annual meeting of the association, and no person shall be qualified to exercise any privilege of membership who is in default. He was an anticorporate campaigner who became John D. Rockefeller’s favorite lawyer. A student and law partner of abolitionist Benjamin F. Wade, Ranney acquired an antislavery reputation and recruited troops for the Union army; but as a Democratic candidate for governor he denied the power of Congress to restrict slavery in the territories, and during the Civil War and Reconstruction he condemned Republican policies. Ranney was a key delegate at Ohio’s second constitutional convention and a two-time justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. He advocated equality and limited government as understood by radical Jacksonian Democrats. Scholarly discussions of Jacksonian jurisprudence have primarily focused on a handful of United States Supreme Court cases, but Ranney’s opinions, taken as a whole, outline a broader approach to judicial decision making. A founder of the Ohio State Bar Association, Ranney was immensely influential but has been understudied until now. He left no private papers, even destroying his own correspondence. In The Jacksonian Conservatism of Rufus P. Ranney, David M. Gold works with the public record to reveal the contours of Ranney’s life and work. The result is a new look at how Jacksonian principles crossed the divide of the Civil War and became part of the fabric of American law and at how radical antebellum Democrats transformed themselves into Gilded Age conservatives.
