Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland, January, 1884 It would be a waste of wo'rds' for us to say anything in rela tion to the value and importance of our fish supply to the people of the state, rich and poor. To the rich they are luxuries, to the poor they are a necessity. Our fish markets 'are famous; and with the exception of our staple products, we venture to say that there is no source of revenue so great, and at-the same time so general, to the people of this state, as the fish from its waters afford. It has long been an indus try in Maryland, and is the only one in our knowledge with 'out adequate protection; but about the laws regulating the catching of fish we shall have more to say in em conclusion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland To his Excellency, Elihu E.Jackson, Governor of Maryland: In accordance with the requirements of the Act creating the Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland, we have the honor to transmit to your Excellency, the following report of our operations, for the year ending December the 31st, 1889. During this year we have visited most of the rivers and creeks of the State, and have distributed the young fry hatched by us, in those, that we deemed most suitable for the same, as will be shown by tabulated statement further on. We also visited the different fisheries, so as to obtain statistics and other information as to the catch for the last year, means employed to take same, and the value thereof. Following in the footsteps of our predecessors, which experience and results show to have been the right course, we have engaged principally in the propagation of shad, herring, rock and perch of various kinds. Having now five hatching stations, viz: One at Druid Hill Park, Baltimore, and one at Havre-de-Grace, one on Tuckahoe river near Coward's Point, Caroline county, known as the Choptank Station, one at Twiford Mills, near Sharptown, Wicomico county, and a short distance from the Nanticoke river, known as the Nanticoke station, and one in the headwaters of the Wicomico river, at Salisbury. All of these stations or hatcheries are equipped with the system and improvements for hatching, which experience and recent discoveries in the science of pisciculture have demonstrated to be the best and most successful. The employees engaged in the taking and hatching of roe, many of whom have been employed for some time, have become very proficient, so that we obtain better results than formerly. The Choptank station, from which we supply the waters of the upper portion of the Eastern Shore with the young fry of shad, herring, rock and perch, is a substantial building of wood, built on piles over the edge of the river and is under the control and management of Thomas Hughlett, Jr., Esq., who has a force of four subordinates to assist him. Mr. Hughlett, who has been connected with the Fish Commission of Maryland from its start, is an efficient and practical man, and takes great interest in his work, and was very successful in the hatch of shad, c., this season, as will be seen by the tabulated report of work accomplished at this station. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioner of Fisheries of Maryland: January, 1878 I have the honor to report, in pursuance of section 4, chapter 47. laws of 1876, "the work accomplished by the Commission" during the year 1877, and to make a few "suggestions for the protection and propagation of the food fishes of the State," as the result of my observation and experience during the four years of service as Commissioner of Fisheries. The past year has been a most important one, to the fishing interest especially, as producers, and to the country at large, as consumers offish, on account of the many indubitable proofs which have accumulated, showing the correctness of the theories on which most of the efforts to restore depleted waters with the valuable fishes, which were once abundant, bat had either entirely disappeared, or had become alarmingly scarce, depended for success. On the correctness of these theories depended also the success of any efforts to stock waters with migratory fishes, which had before been unknown to them. The year 1877 will be noted as adding confirmations so strong that even the hitherto most skeptical can no longer doubt the unerring certainty with which the anadromus fishes (those fishes which move up the rivers to spawn, ) return, when adult, to the river in which they had spent their minority. Delawder, the Commissioners of Fisheries, of Maryland, January, 1886 We beg leave to submit herewith our Report, as State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the year ending December 31st, 1885: The very marked success of the operations of the Fish Commission in previous years has taught us to pursue, as our main purpose, the same policy of propagating the four principal kinds of spring fishes, via The shad, rock, perch and herring. We have also given the German carp our usual great care, and the brook trout, salmon trout and white fish have had a large share of our attention. The results of the work for the year are greater than formerly on account of the advantages of the great recent progress in the science of pisciculture. Experience has given our force of employees greater efficiency, and recently improved hatching apparatus has enabled us to simplify, concentrate and greatly increase our operations. Up to the begining of last year we had only one hatching house - that at Druid Hill Park, Baltimore. We have now three additional ones, each equipped with the finest hatching system in use, located as follows Choptank hatchery, on Tuckahoe creek, near Cowards point, in Caroline county, about four miles from Hillsborough; Nanticoke hatchery, at Twiford's Mills, about one mile from Sharptown, and a-half mile from the Nanticoke river. The Wicomico hatchery is at Salisbury, headwaters of the Wicomico river The Choptank station is intended to supply the waters of the upper eastern shore with shad and perch. In this house there is a set of McDonald automatic hatching jars, having place upon a table 3x12 feet in dimensions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland, to the General Assembly, January 1st, 1876 To His Excellency, James Black Groome, Governor of State of Maryland: The Commissioners appointed by your Excellency in pursuance of Chapter 150, of the laws of Maryland, enacted at the session of the General Assembly of 1874, beg leave to submit the following: We have combined the report of 1874, (not printed,) with that of 1875, that the work of the Commission, from the adjournment of the Legislature of 1874, to the assembling of that of 1876, might be transmitted to that honorable body by your Excellency in its entirety. It is much to be regretted that we are without reliable statistics of the annual yield of our waters, and have only to rely on information furnished from the memory of fishermen and fishdealers, but enough has been obtained to satisfy us, that the most valuable fisheries are becoming less and less productive, and our waters are being depleted of their yield of fishfood, to an alarming extent, and we now feel that necessity for the protection of our fishes, and the resort to artificial means of fish culture to restore our waters, which has stimulated in turn, other more densely peopled countries. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Charles F. Brooke, of Montgomery County, and James D. Anderson, of Somerset County: The Commissioners of Fisheries of Maryland for 1906-1907 The work which has been done by this Commission in stocking waters with perch has been very successful, and numerous rivers which were formerly barren are now so well stocked with this fish that their taking is profitable, and they are being shipped to the markets in large quantities. The results from their propagation have been most gratifying, and beyond our expectations. They are largely upon the increase, and as a food fish for the great masses of the people are exceedingly valuable. We find that trout have greatly multiplied in five of the counties of the Western Shore. Bass fishing has been better for the past two years than for years previous, and this is largely due to re-stocking and to the enforcement of the laws regarding pollution.
