Book excerpt: On the monring of December 2, 1985, the Spanish bulk carrier "Laura Pando" and the Liberian OBO "Maureen" were both at anchor off Port Cartier, Quebec, waiting to berth. They were anchored some seven cables apart. During the forenoon the wind increased in force and the visibility became restricted in the accompanying precipitation. Both vessels independantly noted that the distance between them was closing and the "Maureen" , the windward vessel, decided to weigh anchor. At 1155, after the crew had started to heave up the anchor, the "Maureen" came into contact with the "Laura Pando". Both vessels sustained some damage but were separated within minutes. There was no personal injury or pollution as a result of the striking.

On the run between Les Escoumins and Quebec a failure occurred in the main engine's remote control system making it necessary to operate the engine manually from the engine room and it was therefore decided to lay-over in Quebec to carry out repairs. During berthing manoeuvres in Quebec the vessel violently struck the dock twice, severely damaging her bow. Nevertheless, she continued her voyage at reduce speed to Contrecoeur the following morning and discharged her cargo prior to proceeding to Montreal to effect permanent repairs.

Damage incurred to the "Canadian Prospector" consisted of bent and broken main deck fittings and hull paint scuffs. The "Norchem" proceeded to Montreal where repairs were effected; the "Canadian Prospector" continued to Hamilton. There were no injuries or pollution as a result of this incident.

Some 20 minutes later a small crankcase explosion was assumed to have occurred and the main engine was immediately stopped. The vessel drifted with the current until she was anchored off Longue Pointe. On the following day, the "Paterson" was towed to section 44 in the Port of Montreal where she underwent repairs. She resumed service at about 1810 on September 21, 1985. There were no injuries and no pollution as a result of this incident.
