Book Historical Dictionary of Malaysia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Malaysia written by Ooi Keat Gin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia is one of the most intriguing countries in Asia in many respects. It consists of several distinct areas, not only geographically but ethnically as well; along with Malays and related groups, the country has a very large Indian and Chinese population. The spoken languages obviously vary at home, although Bahasa Malaysia is the official language and nearly everyone speaks English. There is also a mixture of religions, with Islam predominating among the Malays and others, Hinduism and Sikhism among the Indians, mainly Daoism and Confucianism among the Chinese, but also some Christians as well as older indigenous beliefs in certain places. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Malaysia contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Malaysia.

  • Pages : 520 pages

Download or read book Malaysia written by R.S. Milne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1974. Throughout this title two interweaving and interacting themes are apparent. One is the changes resulting from the increasingly important role of politics and politicians in states which until 1963 had been colonies. Politics is, as it were, superimposed on administration. The other is the impact of the Federal Government. From 1963 onwards Sarawak and Sabah were changing because they were “new states”. A short bibliography includes a section on Malaya/Malaysia, which is necessary because this book studies a rather unusual form of the problem of political development as Sarawak and Sabah are not independent countries.

Book excerpt: Is there a risk that Malaysia's racial mixture and its weighted political and economic structures could again explode into the kind of violence which, in 1969, was only just prevented from setting the whole country on fire? And has Singapore's success been bought at a price in civil liberties too high for its health in the future? Four years of th

Book Malaysia s Defeat of Armed Communism

Download or read book Malaysia s Defeat of Armed Communism written by Ong Weichong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malayan Communist Party’s (MCP) decisive defeat in 1960 led many academics and Counterinsurgency (COIN) experts to overlook the resurrection of its armed struggle in 1968. Most scholars continue to regard the so-called ‘Second Emergency’ in Malaysia (1968-1989) as a non-event, and most of the recently published work on the MCP tends to focus on the earlier Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). This book looks at the Second Emergency through recently released archival material from the National Archives in London, the National Australian Archives and the Australian War Memorial, as well as interviews with military and diplomatic officers from the UK and Thailand. It presents the first serious strategic and operational study of the Second Emergency, and analyses three areas of historical significance: the CPM’s strategy for armed struggle in the Second Emergency; the actual effectiveness of the CPM’s subversive propaganda on its target population and most importantly; the counterinsurgency (COIN) response and strategy of the Malaysian state and to a lesser extent the counter-subversion strategy of Singapore in the post-colonial era.

Book Malaysian Development

Download or read book Malaysian Development written by Martin Rudner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Malaysia ranks among the most dynamic of the high-growth Southeast Asian economies, but the prospects for Malaysian success have not always seemed so positive. When Malaysia became independent in 1957, it was a poor and deeply troubled country. With weak political and economic structures, it faced the added threat of a Communist Insurgency. Though the decades since have not been kind to many developing countries, Malaysia has managed to avoid the pitfalls that beset others, and has initiated far-reaching policies designed to restructure its society, alleviate poverty, and promote economic growth. With stable government and a vigorous economy, Malaysia today is among the great success stories of East Asian development."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Growth Structural Change and Regional Inequality in Malaysia

Download or read book Growth Structural Change and Regional Inequality in Malaysia written by Asan Ali Golam Hassan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic development in the long run is seen as a process of structural change that is affected by economic growth. Malaysia is one of the middle-income economies that are going through rapid structural change. Since the mid 1980s it has changed to an industrially based economy with large-scale export of electrical and electronic components. However, thirty years after Malaysia's re-distributive policies have been exercised, regional inequality still exists. This book examines the nature and impact of regional policies in relation to the patterns of demographic and economic structural change and in relation to growth, distribution and income disparities across regions in Peninsular Malaysia. The book also explores the degree to which differences in regional manufacturing distribution and concentration have contributed to regional inequality. It concludes with a number of recommendations for regional policies that will reduce this inequality.

Book The Global Family Planning Revolution

Download or read book The Global Family Planning Revolution written by Warren C. Robinson and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The striking upsurge in population growth rates in developing countries at the close of World War II gained force during the next decade. From the 1950s to the 1970s, scholars and advocacy groups publicized the trend and drew troubling conclusions about its economic and ecological implications. Private educational and philanthropic organizations, government, and international organizations joined in the struggle to reduce fertility. Three decades later this movement has seen changes beyond anyone's most optimistic dreams, and global demographic stabilization is expected in this century. The Global Family Planning Revolution preserves the remarkable record of this success. Its editors and authors offer more than a historical record. They disccuss important lessons for current and future initiatives of the international community. Some programs succeeded while others initially failed, and the analyses provide valuable guidance for emerging health-related policy objectives and responses to global challenges.

Book Small and Medium Business Improvement in the ASEAN Region

Download or read book Small and Medium Business Improvement in the ASEAN Region written by Kenneth James and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1986-12-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identification of small and medium businesses (SMBs) as a target for development policy is a comparatively recent phenomenon. It is clearly linked to the realization in developing countries that large capital-intensive industries which formed the basis of earlier development policies had failed to provide the hoped-for engine of growth. Only in the 1970s, as planners realized the mismatch between Western large-scale technology and local factor endowments, and as urban unemployment became an increasingly pressing problem, did attention turn to smaller scale and more labour intensive enterprises to provide possible solutions.
