Book excerpt: "The definitive full-life biography of Australia's 23rd prime minister; the only one that Hawke cooperated with after exiting the prime ministership. This unprecedented biography of Hawke includes an exclusive series of interviews with him, the last that he gave, as well as unfiltered access to his extensive trove of personal papers. It features new interviews with more than 100 people who knew and worked with Hawke, including his family and friends; political and union colleagues, and rivals; advisers and public servants; and journalists; along with international contemporaries of Hawke such as George H.W. Bush, John Major, Brian Mulroney, James Baker and George Shultz. It also brings together an extraordinary array of never-before-seen archival documents - family diaries, notes, letters and scrapbooks; school and university reports; cabinet, departmental and vice-regal papers; party strategy documents, polling and caucus minutes; and secret correspondence and meeting records between Hawke and other Cold War leaders. Troy Bramston tells the remarkable story of Hawke's upbringing and education, the people and events that shaped him, his rise through the union movement, his complex personality and personal life marked by womanising and the demon drink, his nine-year government from 1983 to 1991, plus his post-prime ministerial life and legacy. This book is about the real Hawke, chronicling the stunning triumphs and shocking failures, a life riddled with huge flaws and great virtues marked by redemption and reinvention, which changed Australia and shaped the world. Revelatory and compelling, it will shock and surprise those who think they know the story of Australia's most popular prime minister"--Publisher's description.

Book Things You Learn Along the Way

Download or read book Things You Learn Along the Way written by John Menadue and published by PEARLS & IRRITATIONS P/L. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I changed a lot over sixty years, but I never lost the dissenter tradition that I learned in my first fifteen years in the Methodist manse. I worked for Rupert Murdoch and saw how seductive power is. Later, as head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra, I had the bizarre experience of working for Gough Whitlam in the morning of 11 November 1975 and, in the afternoon, for Malcolm Fraser after John Kerr dismissed the Whitlam Government. The anger of what happened on that fateful day is still with me. Working with Malcolm Fraser, however, proved liberating. I realised that while being an outsider was uncomfortable, it was manageable. It was as Australian Ambassador in Japan in the late 1970s that I learned most about Australia and myself. As head of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs ( 1981-83 ), I had the most job of my life, being involved in nation-building and playing my part in ending White Australia. As CEO at Qantas ( 1986-89 ), I experienced the difficulties of dealing with a board and a Government with agendas that weren't the same as mine - and the pressure to conform. All institutions, like people, are in need of radical daily reform. Without dissenters, institutions die. In that respect I became more radical as I grew older. I now believe that the one thing above all else I've learned is that we need relationships and community if our lives are to be complete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHY NOW BACK IN PRINTBlanche d'Alpuget's classic 1982 biography of Robert J. Hawke remains one of the finest examples of political biography in Australian literature.Robert James Lee Hawke is one of the great men of Australian public life and his story makes compelling reading. Blanche d'Alpuget's sensitivity and psychological insight into Hawke's early years reveal how the son of devout Christian parents was reared to public duty and to the ambition of political leadership.Known throughout his life as a tireless campaigner for workers' rights and a man of wild personal habits, Hawke was a Rhodes Scholar, educated in three universities, before rejecting an academic career to commit himself to the trade union movement. As President of the ACTU from 1970 to 1980 he was a master negotiator and peacemaker in industrial life. He agitated for social and economic reforms, becoming a folk hero and the most popular Australian of his time. While he was President of the Australian Labor Party he sought to heal its wounds after the sacking of the Whitlam government; as the leader of Australia's unions he held back potentially violent industrial action over this most divisive issue. To unionists he was a giant killer; to some employers, a crypto-Communist bent upon their destruction. Hawke: The Early Years is an intimate portrait of a man of extraordinary achievements who struggles to overcome his drinking and philandering in order to rise to the highest office in Australia.

Book Once Upon a Hume Volume I

Download or read book Once Upon a Hume Volume I written by Stephen Gard and published by BlueDawe Books. This book was released on 2016-07 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once Upon A Hume takes the reader on a journey down the ‘Great South Road’, as the Hume Highway was once known. We follow the original route, and rather than going from town to town, we travel personality by personality, catching up with some of the intriguing folk who lived near, or preyed upon, or prospered by, the Great South Road, from its earliest days. Few of these folk - or features - are well-known. All have a story to share. We visit: Hugh McCrae, eccentric poet-laureate of Elderslie. The monstrous Razorback, a menace to travellers and to early settlement itself. Carl Rümker, Picton’s half-mad star-gazing genius. Emily, the Spectre of Redbank Tunnel. Vault Hill, and the scattered bones of the Antill clan. Mary Lupton, who escaped hanging as a teenaged girl and became heir to most of Sydney’s Millers Point. Sophie Corrie, Yerrinbool’s Canned Fruit Queen, who made her life story a work of fiction. George Cutter, the knife-wielding publican of Mittagong... … and many other persons and prominences. Once Upon a Hume is a travellers’ companion. Anecdotal, informative, and chatty, it peoples the Hume Highway landscape with vivid characters and occurrences, profiles prominences, explains place-names, and makes an absorbing panorama of the passing show. This is the first of several volumes about the colourful humanity who dwelt Once Upon A Hume.
