Book Relationships of Leadership Competence with Leader and Unit Performance Effectiveness

Download or read book Relationships of Leadership Competence with Leader and Unit Performance Effectiveness written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report integrates findings on platoon leaders' (PLs) and platoon sergeants' (PSs) performance on the leadership competencies that U.S. Army doctrine sets forth for guiding leader development. Platoon members rated their leaders' competencies before platoons deployed to a U.S. Army Combat Training Center (CTC). Leaders were also rated by observer/controllers (OCs) on their competency performance during the CTC exercises. The CTC OCs and/or platoon members later rated the performance of platoons in mission accomplishment and the overall effectiveness of PLs and PSs as leaders during the CTC exercises. Ratings indicated that PLs and PSs need some improvement, especially in the leadership shown at-the CTCs. Competency performance both at the home station and during CTC exercises was consistently correlated with platoon effectiveness in mission accomplishment. While these results suggest the validity of the competencies for leader development, other results show the need for methods yielding ratings that are specific both to leadership components and to leaders in a unit.

Book The Impact of Leader Competence and Platoon Conditions on Platoon Performance in Simulated Combat Exercises

Download or read book The Impact of Leader Competence and Platoon Conditions on Platoon Performance in Simulated Combat Exercises written by Thomas D. Kane and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research concerned the quality of military leadership when, at the home post or station of a unit's assignment, leaders prepared their units for deployment to combat. Hypotheses were drawn from cognitive resources theory (CRT) to examine the influence of leader-boss stress and member support on a leader's use of personal resources in simulated combat exercises. Evidence supported predictions that member support influences the relationship between leadership competence and unit performance. The relationship among leader competence, leader experience, and leader-boss stress did not support CRT. Results are discussed with respect to CRT and other relevant leadership theory. Findings highlight the importance of attending to group conditions when planning intervention to enhance the effectiveness of unit leadership. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Leadership goes, so goes the group, the organization, the nation, et al. Yet in spite of this multi-millennial axiom and the simple fact that we are the best leadershipeducated society in the history of business, our encounters with genuine leaders remain extremely rare. Real Leadership! Are You Ready? examines this perplexing phenomenon and qualifies the problem as an unwillingness and/or inability to use new leadership information to improve our performance. It also provides the solution: a Leadership Enrichment LIFE-cycle (LEL-c) to help individuals and organizations build and sustain durable Leadership Platforms. If you are ready to enrich your personal leadership and raise the level of leadership in your organization, this book is for you. But I caution you ahead of time—this book and its measures of merit are a little different than the typical leadership development offering. It won’t offer instant solutions or allow for a casual engagement by the passive reader. No! It offers much more than that. The principal measure of merit for Real Leadership! Are You Ready? is the extent to which it will steal you and your organization away from the impersonal and futile trappings of fake leadership and enable you to move toward the personal and productive outcomes of Real Leadership. With your commitment and this book as a guide, the personal and organizational platforms that emerge will not only provide better support for the weight of those who choose to follow your lead, they will actually be able to withstand the world’s difficult tests of time and torrent.

Book excerpt: Schooled to oversee fixed, almost unvarying routines, managers today are unprepared to manage the conflicts in modern work flow relationships. The demand for more and quicker responsiveness to customers, market, product, and process changes means there are few "routine" technologies left to manage. The modern line manager, according to Sayles, must be a "working leader," managing work flow relationships on the boundaries between jobs, functions, departments; making things "work" through trade-offs with superiors and peers. The working leader has an agenda, knows the system inside out, is comfortable with fluidity, and recognizes that the parts do not always fit into an integrated whole. The recent emphasis on "core competencies" and "operating capabilities" as keys to competitive advantage represents a radical shift away from the presumption that business leadership is primarily about strategic decisions. Corporate success, Sayles insists, now depends upon execution, implementation, and expertise. In the past managers presumed that work systems were programmed to be efficient; now astute managers recognize that extraordinary efforts are required to attain and maintain effective operations. Sayles shows with vivid case studies how middle managers with an in-depth understanding of the organization can resolve the inherent contradictions and ambiguities among design, sales, and manufacturing. He also shows that while many companies are instilling "customer consciousness" and "quality consciousness" as compartmentalized activities, "effective" management of work systems automatically leads to high performance in quality, efficiency, and service. By facilitating high performance, hands on working leaders can increase the sense of responsibility and motivation of subordinates. Finding solutions to inconsistencies and dilemmas in work systems forces managers to become real leaders. Checking the interface
