Book Rehabilitation of Rivers for Fish

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Rivers for Fish written by Ian G. Cowx and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Value can be added to projects for restoring the aesthetic appeal of modified waterways at very little extra cost if the needs of the living components of the system are taken into account. This manual was prepared by the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) to provide guidelines and techniques for the rehabilitation of rivers for fish. It is intended for the use of fisheries managers, fisheries and wildlife biologists, land and water use planners, and civil engineers working on projects involving the protection and rehabilitation of inland running waters. While the primary orientation of the manual is towards rivers of the temperate zone, the techniques described can be applied to the restoration of rivers of similar dimensions in other climatic areas.

Book Rehabilitation of Rivers

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Rivers written by Louise de Waal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rehabilitation of Rivers Principles and Implementation Edited by Louise C. de Waal Division of Environmental and Analytical Sciences, University of Wolverhampton, UK Andrew R. G. Large Department of Geography, University of Newcastle, UK and P. Max Wade Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, UK River rehabilitation has become an issue at the top of the agenda for water authorities and river managers in many countries throughout the world. This challenging topic involves a wide range of themes, many of which are brought together in this volume. They concern planning strategy, implementation and project appraisal for a number of different types of river systems including upland, lowland and urban rivers. Topic areas addressed include hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and economics as, to be successful, rehabilitation of freshwaters must incorporate all of these subjects within a holistic framework. This volume covers a wide range of countries, provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of factors concerning river rehabilitation and encompasses policy, planning and implementation. As such, the text will have a lasting reference value and practical application. Rehabilitation of Rivers combines prescriptive, analytical and reviewing contributions, covering a wide range of case studies from Britain, continental Europe, the USA, Australia and Japan. It also examines strategic issues such as catchment planning and integrated application of ecology and engineering in river rehabilitation. This book will be an important text for all water authorities and river managers as well as hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists and nature conservationists.

It discusses opportunities for enhancement of water supplies and avoidance of overexploitation of water resources in the Middle East. Based on the concept that ecosystem goods and services are essential to maintaining water quality and quantity, the book emphasizes conservation, improved use of current technologies, and water management approaches that are compatible with environmental quality.

Book Effects of Urban River Rehabilitation Structures on the Fish Community of the Ottawa River Ohio

Download or read book Effects of Urban River Rehabilitation Structures on the Fish Community of the Ottawa River Ohio written by Aaron Dennis Svoboda and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban rivers are often viewed as prime candidates for rehabilitation efforts. However, few analyses on the effects of rehabilitation structures on a resident fish community have been published. A 1,500m section of the Ottawa River located on the University of Toledo campus was the site of such urban river rehabilitation. A before/after - control/impact (BACI) study design was implemented to analyze the impact of the rehabilitation. I predicted that rehabilitation structures, while limited by the regional species pool, would positively impact the fish community abundance, richness, Shannon diversity (SDI), and index of biotic integrity (IBI). I also predicted that rehabilitation structures would positively affect site habitat quality in terms of surficial sediment heterogeneity, variability of water depth, and a quantitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI). Eight 20m sites were selected; four control sites and four impact sites, where structures were placed after 2013 sampling. Each of the eight sites was sampled twice during low water in the summers of 2013 and 2014. Fish community metrics, collected with seines and a backpack shocker, included species presence, diversity, richness, IBI and spawning condition. Habitat variables included Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI), sediment texture, water depth and flow, water quality, and canopy cover. Fish community and habitat metrics were analyzed using poisson and linear models, respectively. Impact site abundance in 2014 was greater than 2014 control abundance (p
