Book Visual Power and Fame in Ren d Anjou Geoffrey Chaucer and the Black Prince

Download or read book Visual Power and Fame in Ren d Anjou Geoffrey Chaucer and the Black Prince written by S. Gertz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading semiotically against the backdrop of medieval mirrors of princes, Arthurian narratives, and chronicles, this study examines how René d Anjou (1409-1480), Geoffrey Chaucer s House of Fame (ca. 1375-1380), and Edward the Black Prince (1330-1376) explore fame s visual power. While very different in approach, all three individuals reject the classical suggestion that fame is bestowed and understand that particularly in positions of leadership, it is necessary to communicate effectively with audiences in order to secure fame. This sweeping study sheds light on fame s intoxicating but deceptively simple promise of elite glory.

Book Patronage and Power in the Medieval Welsh March

Download or read book Patronage and Power in the Medieval Welsh March written by David Stephenson and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of a Welsh family of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries who were not drawn from the princely class. Though they were of obscure and modest origins, the patronage of great lords of the March – such as the Mortimers of Wigmore or the de Bohun earls of Hereford – helped them to become prominent in Wales and the March, and increasingly in England. They helped to bring down anyone opposed by their patrons – like Llywelyn, prince of Wales in the thirteenth century, or Edward II in the 1320s. In the process, they sometimes faced great danger but they contrived to prosper, and unusually for Welshmen one branch became Marcher lords themselves. Another was prominent in Welsh and English government, becoming diplomats and courtiers of English kings, and over some five generations many achieved knighthood. Their fascinating careers perhaps hint at a more open society than is sometimes envisaged.

Book Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince

Download or read book Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince written by Stella Mary Newton and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close study of clothes worn by aristocratic families and their households at the time of the Black Prince - and of Chaucer - showing Europe-wide influences. 1340 to 1363 were years remarkable for dramatic developments in fashion and for extravagant spending on costume, foreshadowing the later luxury of Richard II's court. Stella Mary Newton broke new ground with this detailed study, which discusses fourteenth-century costume in detail. She draws on surviving accounts from the Royal courts, the evidence of chronicles and poetry (often from unpublished manuscripts), and representations in painting, sculpture andmanuscript illumination. Her exploration of aspects of chivalry, particularly the choice of mottoes and devices worn at tournaments, and of the exchange of gifts of clothing between reigning monarchs, offers new insights into thesocial history of the times, and she has much to say that is relevant to the study of illuminated manuscripts of the fourteenth century. STELLA MARY NEWTON's lifelong interest in costume has been the mainspring of her work, from early days as a stage and costume designer (including designing the costumes for the first production of T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral) to her later work at the National Gallery advising on the implications ofcostume for the purpose of dating, and at the Courtauld Institute where she set up the department for the study of the history of dress.

Book Medieval Parks of Hertfordshire

Download or read book Medieval Parks of Hertfordshire written by Anne Rowe and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: the county in medieval times. Parks were particularly numerous in the north-eastern part of the county and relatively sparse in the south-west. The underlying reasons for this pattern are explored, focusing in particular on the unusual relationship between the distribution of the parks and the distribution of woodland in the county at Domesday. Based on an enormous amount of original work, this meticulously researched book opens a window onto medieval Hertfordshire and illuminates a significant aspect of the county's landscape history." --Book Jacket.
