Book Third Way Reforms

Download or read book Third Way Reforms written by Jingjing Huo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the transformation of contemporary social democracy through the concept of "third way" reforms. It proposes a set of theories about the possibility for continuing social democratic ideological adaptation, for ideologies to overcome institutional constraints in triggering path-breaking innovations, and for social democracy to bridge the insider-outsider divide. Empirically, the book utilizes these theories to account for social democratic welfare state and labor market reforms in nine OECD countries after the end of the Golden Age. Based on the logic of "public evils," the book proposes that the ideologically contested nature of institutions provides incentives for institutional innovation. Social democratic ideology shapes the fundamental characteristics and content of the third way policy paradigm, and the paradigm's practical implementation continues to be path-dependent on historical institutional settings.

Book The Road to Renewal

Download or read book The Road to Renewal written by R. Richard Geddes and published by Government Institutes. This book was released on 2011 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Road to Renewal: Private Investment in U.S. Transportation Infrastructure, R. Richard Geddes surveys the current state of the American transportation system and finds that, like the roads themselves, the existing policy approach is in desperate need of repair. Drawing on the basic economic principles behind supply, demand, competition, and incentives, Geddes argues that a shift toward increased use of public-private partnerships (PPPs)--contractual agreements between public agencies and private parties that allow private participation in the design, construction, operation, and delivery of transportation facilities--could significantly improve the quality of America's transportation infrastructure. By learning to see themselves as customers and investors--rather than mere users--of roads and highways, Americans should expect to receive a reasonable return on their investment: thorough, effective maintenance of America's transportation infrastructure. The Road to Renewal shows how incorporating increased private participation can halt the deterioration of America's transportation system and become the foundation for a safer, more efficient transportation future."--P. Book Sustaining Reforms for Inclusive Growth in Cameroon

Download or read book Sustaining Reforms for Inclusive Growth in Cameroon written by Florence Charlier and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive review of Cameroon's development policies since the 1970s-including public finance, privatization, trade, infrastructure, and governance-finds that Cameroon's malaise is due less to a lack of resources than to an inability to sustain reforms and to implement growth-enhancing policies. While the government's strategies have been sound, this volume argues that an "administrative inertia" has set in. This study makes a number of key recommendations to overcome this inertia, enhance cohesion and consistency in government actions, strengthen capacity to effectively execute programs, and hence increase development outcomes for Cameroon.

Book excerpt: "The report identifies seven hallmarks of a developmental approach to juvenile justice to guide system reform: accountability without criminalization, alternatives to justice system involvement, individualized response based on needs and risks, confinement only when necessary for public safety, genuine commitment to fairness, sensitivity to disparate treatment, and family engagement. Implementing Juvenile Justice Reform outlines how these hallmarks should be incorporated into policies and practices within OJJDP, as well as in actions extended to state, local, and tribal jurisdictions to achieve the goals of the juvenile justice system through a developmentally informed approach."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The Aug. 1, 2007, collapse of a Minnesota bridge raised nationwide questions about bridge safety and the Dept. of Transportation¿s ability to prioritize resources for bridges. This study examines: (1) how the HBP addresses bridge conditions; (2) how states use HBP funds and select bridge projects for funding; (3) what data indicates about bridge conditions and the HBP¿s impact; and (4) the extent to which the HBP aligns with generally accepted principles, and fed. laws and regulations, for re-examining surface transportation programs. Includes recommendations. Charts and tables.
